Wow I know exactly what you’re talking about with the jerking/ hesitation of the transmission. Went to a nearby Toyota dealership, waited 2 hours and paid them $190 for them to tell they couldn’t “replicate” the issue and there was nothing they could do about it. Unbelievable, I’m beyond pissed off. Then on my dashcam I hear the “technician” say verbatim “They’re complaining about that hesitation. Which is normal”…. So they’re aware of the issue but refused to fix it.
Yes, the Toyota Fanboys would say it's completely acceptable but I've never had another car that did this brand new. Believe me, getting the transmission reflash does work, now the transmission works perfectly.
@@rhynecars facts! I used to drive a 2006 Lexus GS before handing it down to my younger brother and it shifted smoothly and still does, same with my moms 2007 v8 tundra. Vehicles this new, mine being a 2018, should not jerk or hesitate, it’s completely unacceptable.
@@rhynecars Did you try to set it to sport mode and not eco mode? The eco mode would be hunting for fuel economy instead of optimal sportiness.
Got a quarter o MILLION miles on my 2018, still running great! It has always been a little wonky like that, but the gas pedal is totally different and very sensitive, the fulcrum is on the ground if you haven't noticed.
ever change fluid or still original?
Mine needed the update. Before 30k I changed the transmission fluid (drain and fill) now shifts like a dream
I just bought a used 2018 Camry XLE and I’m experiencing this currently. I had experienced the same issues in a 2017 sienna that I had owned with the same motor setup but the shifting and the sluggishness in the transmission was way worse than what I am currently experiencing. I’m glad to know that there’s an update, I will be doing that soon.
Have you done it yet? Im taking mine tomorrow wanted to know if really does make any difference? TIA
I have a 2019 SE and the transmission works great ever since I got the update. I didn’t really care about the hesitation much since the transmissions on my previous cars did much sketchier things but I got the update anyway since it was free and I had extra time on my hands. My Civic had a very squirrelly transmission that made the hesitating Toyota 8 speed seem like butter, but I drove it 100k miles that way with no issues
Does this update apply to the 2019 Camrys? I’m about to buy one off the lot but I feel like the transmission is having this issue. I’m gonna ask them to fix it before I buy it. It has the 8 speed auto trans. Only thing holding me back
@@loganmorin1534 yea you could get the update on the 2019 too. Mine is a 2019. Now, it’s not that important tho because the transmission “issue” is rather annoying, not an actual reliability issue. Even if the transmission does that gear hunting and hesitation, that doesn’t mean it’s going to fail on you
@Peter Rhyne you have to check the electrical wiring on the transmission,I checked mine and i found it to be cut open,it may have came from the factory defective and im trying to get the electrical wiring replaced
It’s a TSB if you got charged you need to contact corporate. The dealer I bought the car at wanted to charge me 100.00 to update the radio to do apple carplay. I looked online did it myself started going to another dealership for service. While in there for my state inspection I asked about to tsb for the transmission they did it but n another day free. They can’t charge on a manufacture defect

Once I arrive their I meet up with Brian singterry service manager and inform him the issue. He took the vehicle to the technician to get it diagnose. After 45 mins the car was ready for pick up and he inform me that they don`t see any issue. My advice to others if your going to buy any vehicle especially totally redesigned vehicle make sure you buy extended warranty and don`t end up in my situation.
Finally someone talked about the exact same shit I’ve been experiencing with my Camry since I bought it. So how much did they charge you for the update my friend? Thanks for videos btw
Mine is the 23 version and I’ve complained so much lately, it struggles to downshift I have to put it in manual mode, also it jerks from 1st to 2nd to 3rd
Yeah my 23 Camry does the exact same thing, it jerks during shifts, it won’t down shift when slowing down etc.. everything the 18 and 19s did I feel itll be like 2 years before they make a tsb for mine ugh I’m mad, other then that the car is great

@@cameronjacobs9697 not yet they haven’t gotten an update for it yet, it’s annoying, I got the d3 tune and it helps a little better then stock, but yeah I had the transmission it’s holding it back.
thank you so much for this info, i have this problem with my 2021. the hesitation from 2nd to 1st went away at 21,000 miles but it still shifts way too late. i have to be going 1mph for it to shift back into 1st gear!!!
update: i went to the dealership and they explained that this problem was fixed in camrys 2020 and newer, so the problem i was having was different but very common and a lot of people complained about it, even in rav4s. they reset the transmission since i drive a lot differently than when i first got it, and it’s already running much better.
I have a 2021 Camry SE and I have this problem too. I am the first owner of the car and has 10k miles on it now. I took it tot the dealer and they said nothing wrong with the car!
@@zaidkhreefa3722 glad i’m not the only one. it’s annoying but designed to work like that. it’s done to run smoother. does your car feel like it goes into neutral when shifting from 2nd to 1st gear when coming to a stop? like you stop and then it jerks forward again?
Yup, my 2021 Camry shifts weird and hard sometimes, I almost want to get a different car.
I have same issue with 2020 Sienna with same UA80E transmission.
Light, steady throttle input (say 10-20%) and driving on level or slight incline grade, the car will vibrate and almost feel like you're driving down a rough road. If you hit it just right (or wrong!) it will start pulsing/bucking. Feels similar to when you start to run out of gas, except I'm pretty sure it's drivetrain relatewd. Especially when driving with a full van.
I had a 2020 Camry loaner for a week, and it did the exact same thing. This made me feel a bit better to know it wasn't a one-off problem, but still makes me wish I had of bought a used model with the old 6 speed..
I have a 2020 camry only 66.000 miles now transmission problem. That's crazy
i too have a 2018 sienna and the transmission jerks from 1-2 and 2-3. its horrible. did toyota not test drive it before they put it to production? the older 6spds were way better.
does anyone know if this update is available for the sienna also?
I have a 2021 camry with 40k miles currently. I have had the pulsing acceleration at low speeds (around 10mph) happen but only three times since I’ve had the car.
had the 19 camry i hated the shift felt weird i got rid of it after 80k no issues I got the rav 2023 same transmission it shifts way way smoother no issues at all .
It's because the RAV 4 has a CVT transmission not the 8 speed
@@Mystic-on5xyonly the hybrid has cvt. Non hybrids has regular 8speed automatic
When I read the TSB, it states that it’s covered under the Toyota Federal Emission Warranty, which is a 96 month/80,000 mile warranty. You shouldn’t have had to pay
The dealer would not agree. I tried.

My 2023 Toyota Camry does all the rough shifts, holds gears etc.. I have to floor it to make it get out of gear. The newer ones a lot where not fixed dealership told me to keep complaining. There is a lag on mine badly, hard shifts, holding gears which sucks when I need to accelerate. It’s also slow a lot too. The d3 performance tuner people said have fixed the hard shifts and the holding gears completely. My 2023 it’s not fun to drive because of the issue now I have to drop $630 on the tuner to fix the issues, it also feels lazy and one guy said the tuner makes the care not lazy anymore.
This is really good info, glad there's some aftermarket support out there to make things smoother. I think a lot of the refinement issues are the price to pay for extreme economy. The fuel mileage on this car is pretty amazing for being a gas powered engine versus diesel or hybrid.
@@rhynecars for sure just wish they would make the TSB for the newer ones too it’s annoying sucks to drop $630 on a tuner to help
@@rhynecarstbh even with the tuner it still seems to be sluggish etc.. like the 18-20 Camrys, I’m hoping they make a TSB for the newer ones because I’m paying $$650 roughly on car payment and this is not worth it when the car doesn’t wanna run right
This should be free. When my brother got his 2018 base Camry I immediately noticed the weird shift patterns. The car felt like it had no power because of how spaced out each gear is. It just made the driving experience feel sluggish at best.
2018 was 1st year of that Gen. It's now 2023......This Transmission is A+
I agree I think it is traditional design, and while not as refined as some other contemporary transmissions I believe that means it will last.
How do you know the transmission issues are fixed?
I’m finding the transmission shutters between gears 3 and 4. It’s the way the clutch packs bind aggressively and it lessens as the car warms up.
Yes, a bit unrefined for a Toyota in the past, but normal for an AT. This is their first mass production trans that locks up in every gear, so it's not perfect.
I put a deposit down on a 2023 Camry SE which is currently in transit to the dealer. I assume the 2023 model year has the latest updates installed by default?
I’m having the same issues with my 19, it’s bullshit that they want to charge for the update. Also I have a vibration around 2000rpms and that’s at any speed.. people is telling me it’s the torque converter.. I have 70k on mine currently.. not happy what do ever.
do you know if this update or another is available for the sienna? ive been having similar experiences with my 2018 sienna.

I have a 2021 Camry SE that I bought new and still facing this problem. It’s very annoying when it happens. Also, I always get a rapid downshift and drop in RPM as soon as I decelerate or lift my food from the gas.
Definitely take it to the dealer and insist on a transmission reprogram, watch them do it!
Downshift will increase RPM. Did you mean you have a drop in RPM from deceleration which then causes a downshift? If so that would be normal behavior.
Fluid change, use asmoil signature series. Get your Mechanic to add a can of seafoam through the fill port. Drive a week, then drain and fill with amsoil signature series.
I’ve noticed with my 2018 Camry that the transmission seems to be adaptive almost like it’s a smart transmission
if I drive it very slow and for fuel economy then the next day when I get in my car, it’ll bog down and up shift gears sooner. but if I drive my car, fast and harsh for a while, then when I get into my car, the transmission will shift very aggressively and hold gears a lot longer When I’m trying to drive slow it seems like it’s a smart transmission but also I’m a 23 so I might just be assuming everything is smart 😂😂
Yes it is an adaptive transmission
My 2020 Camry started shifting “differently” after I had the transmission flushed at 52k. I took it back to the dealership and they said they couldn’t replicate it and everything was fine. They also reset the transmission memory and it felt normal for about one day. Browsing the comments here to see if this TSB applies to my model year.
Did you have it flushed at a Toyota dealership? Many local shops will put a non-factory fluid in which has different viscosity. It can shift more harshly or slip and then can create problems within one year...
@@rhynecars Yes. It was serviced at the Toyota dealership I purchased it at. It almost immediately felt slightly different. A little herky jerky when accelerating around corners, mostly notice it at lower speeds. It’s very slight but I’m the only driver and I notice a difference.
@@chrismunro3624 OK good. If they reflash the transmission at the same time or disconnected the battery, which they will do as a procedure for any car work, it will probably take more than a week for the transmission to relearn your driving patterns and smooth back out. Pretty normal
I’ve got a 2019 se and the transmission is shifting hard at times, slipping for no reason, massive delays in power, sometimes when I need to make a pass or speed up from a stop fast in anyway when it downshifts and I accelerate it hits about 3500-4000 rpm’s in the low gear then you literally feel a massive power loss and what seems like a force shift and when it’s in the next gear I will be still going slow and at like 2000 rpm’s with the same amount of throttle (about 65%) I applied initially to make the speed up. I just got the car and have a massive loan on it and it’s only got 90k miles idk what to do
@Peter Rhyne Did you try to set it to sport mode and not eco mode? The eco mode would be hunting for fuel economy instead of optimal sportiness.
it probably needs the transmission software update. any dealership should be able to perform it free of charge for you. do you still have the car and if so does it still do this?
@@jaysarchive7325yes I still have the car and it’s still making the same issues

Because there aren't enough complaints about these 2019s. They also "fixed" it for the current generation so it only affected two model years.

No, the software was updated for your model year. You could try having the transmission memory reset so that it can relearn your driving style. A mechanic and reset the trans mission or you can use an OBD scan tool to do it.
How is it now? No more issues? Thinking of 2023 model LE.

Fuel economy did not change. The new program has remained improved even with the re-learning.
You mean decrease because idc anymore complaining about increasing fuel economy 🤣
I love paying for someone else's design flaw. Mazda also has a service bulletin for cracked cylinder heads, but no recall, despite everyone having the issue . I was looking forward to purchasing one, but the lack of recall shows me they're not willing to stand behind their vehicles. Decided to look at Camrys, but worried about these new transmissions. I was happy to see that it didn't utilize the CVT, but seems that these automakers have sold out in the name of efficiency over reliability so the transmissions suck regardless.
Hey I see that your little screen that shows the speed isn’t showing the speed. The same problem is happening with my car. Is there a fix? Or will I have to go to the dealership to get it fixed? (I have a 2018 Camry Le)

Anyone been using Valvoline maxlife synthetic transmission fluid or idemitsu in their Toyota 8-speed automatic for very long? Been wondering how it compares to the Toyota ws stuff
My brother tried it in his Sienna and immediately noticed harder shifting. Use the exact specification of fluid, be it WS, Mercon V, Mobil ATF, otherwise all bets are off. ATF is not like motor oils, it is a fluid designed with hydraulic friction modifiers that can seriously harm your clutches, valvebodies and other parts if you use the wrong type.
@@rhynecars happen to have any details on the year of the sienna and how many miles it had on the fluid that was drained? Was curious because that's also symptoms of the fluid going to long before being changed and transmission damage already having occurred with the old fluid. Going too long between changes can cause hard shifting or slippage. Or getting tiny particles of dirt inside the tran as well. Thanks for the response. Hoping we can get multiple reports with full details from multiple circumstances to gather the most accurate conclusion possible! I would not worry about that now they have worked out the issues by 2020 and they are doing fine with Uber Drivers reporting they have hit the 300k mile marks and original transmissions on 2019 Camries. If I were out to buy a Car right now it would be a Camry or a Avalon since they are dis-continuing the Avalon you can find a great deal and they are the last of that model and bullet proof. I'm also 6"4 their cars aren't even comfortable to ride in especially for the price you can spend extra money on bullshit wish I would spend $30,000 on a car that needs $9,000 worth of work before it's even paid off yeah right.
@@rhynecarsand she took it Toyota and they said nothing was wrong. Lol they are terrible and Need sued.
The i66 hahahah
That's the way we like it
Not true at all
Such a scummy way of handling this. It's not a problem, it's a feature. If you want this feature to be tweaked, shell out some money for it.
I brought my 2018 Toyota Camry SE with 8 miles at Toyota of north Miami back in August 2017 and unfortunately on 05/23/2019 I find out that I need a new transmission for my car .Let me Start by saying that I did my regular maintenance Every Five Thousand mile interval RECOMMEND by Toyota guidelines making sure it will keep running like a Toyota at Toyota of Hollywood FL and The vehicle haven`t been into any car accident. I’m extremely Strict on maintenance on my vehicle knowing that I drive constantly through harsh weathers. On 05/21/2019 I was heading to Walmart suddenly; the car suddenly start rev on its own while the car is on D drive (as if the car were in neutral) I immediately but gently apply the brakes and pull over on the side of the road turn of the car and restart it. I call Toyota of Hollywood and inform my service adviser the issue and suggest bringing it to the dealership safety. Once I arrive their I meet up with Brian singterry service manager and inform him the issue. He took the vehicle to the technician to get it diagnose. After 45 mins the car was ready for pick up and he inform me that they don`t see any issue. I left the dealership 10 miles later the car starts to act up again, but this time warning light came on from pre-collision system malfunction land departure malfunction etc. I went back to dealership and show my service manager brain. Brain inform me that they will investigate it first think in the morning because it was late in the day. It took the technician 3 days for them to figure out the issue and their conclusion was that it’s a mechanical failure and need a replacement. unfortunately, the powertrain covers 3 years/ 60,000 miles and the time of the issue Occur on 05/23/2019 odometer 68,841 therefore I wasn’t cover under warranty. For a new transmission is $4,597.92 LABOR: $750.38 TAX: $376.14 and Misc.: $25.00 totaling up to $5,749.44 I contact Toyota USA 1-800-331-4331 number and speak with a senior advisor and inform him my situation. After five business days he contact me stating that he had finish his investigation unfortunately due to the car having a lot of mileage in a short time and they are not legally obligated since the car is out of warranty however since were loyal customer they were able to provide help with cost of replacing the transmissions the amount of $2,500 reducing the balanced of $3,249.44. as of today, 6/20/19 my vehicle is repair but unable to take it out because I’m unable to paid $3,249.44 It`s extreme hard to come out Three thousand dollars out of pocket while paying car payments, insurance, food, phone bill, and transportation to go to school and work. My advice to others if your going to buy any vehicle especially totally redesigned vehicle make sure you buy extended warranty and don`t end up in my situation
Thank you for sharing, I hope you are able to get it back soon. If you reach out to several local mechanic shops, you may be able to tell them your story. They may agree to give you a second opinion for a low cost or for free, ,and sometimes dealers are wrong.
The dealership cannot hold a car if a repair has not been authorized, but if you have an outstanding bill, they can retain the car as collateral.
@@rhynecars as of today 10/12/2020 I already paid the $3000 bill. And AGAIN the transmission is slipping. With the new transmission!!!!
@@Fiandrea9 this doesn't sound normal, this is not really a Toyota design problem but if anything is a service and workmanship issue. I would have a mechanic from a different shop drive it and tell you what they think.
@@rhynecars they drive and said it’s slipping and need to change it out again
@@Fiandrea9 Go to another shop for diagnosis. They either installed it incorrectly or put in the wrong fluid. Something is wrong.
