The way she put back her hand for Huber at the umpire. It shows how humble she is. All the love for her. My all time favourite ❤

In her book she describes herself in this tournament as a bit overweight and uncomfortable with her body after the weight she put on stress eating after the stabbing.. poor thing did not deserve what happened to her but what an absolute champ and legend she truly proved herself to be !
I'd say Monica was about 10 -15 lbs over her natural weight in this match. It
is likely this extra weight she could not shake, cost her some future grand
slam tournaments. I heard Chris Evert say Monica weighed only 109 lbs when
she was 16 or 17, and she's around 5'9" tall. In those days she was skin, bones
and muscle, but she could still hammer the ball. She is listed at 134 lbs for
this match, but I think more like around 140 lbs. I would say Monica's ideal
weight to play tennis and have stamina would be 125 -128 lbs, so she was
carrying more weight around during matches, and she'd run out of gas quicker
than she used too.
@@grantp4022 By your description it sounds like she also did not have enough weight before the stabbing though, despite all her wins, and her ideal weight was something in between. That is interesting if true. I am not an expert on that kind of thing.

If I remember Monica got to the finals of the US Open as well. She definitely proved herself capable of winning major titles even after the stabbing. What a champion!

One of the greatest accomplishments in our sport to come back after three years away after the stabbing …Monica was never the same player or person after Hamburg but really how could she be…given what she was dealt she handled it all with grace and determination..one of greatest of all time at the Aussie open…she was probably going to win many more slams..definitely more Aussie and French opens and a couple more US opens plus at least one Wimbledon…great highlights here Monica really last great match of 96 as she could not serve full out until spring of 97…still won 5 tournaments and ended the year number 2 in the world

When you consider Monica won 8 Grand Slams by the time she was just 19, I don't
think any other women will come close to that. She was dominating Steffi Graff in
play at the time, and just steam rolling along, winning consecutive tournaments. In
this tournament here, she wins her 9th grand slam. After her win here, her dad got
very sick over the next 3-4 years, and died, and this took a lot out of Monica.
If she would not have been stabbed in 1993 by a Graf fan ( nut) I think there is a
good likelihood Monica would have won at least 20 slams. I have never seen a player
play with such grit, determination and desire to win. Monica Seles always motivated
me when I watched her play, and will always be my all time favourite tennis player.
Seles never dominated Graf. In Wimbledon Seles was humiliated by Graf!
6:06 is EXACTLY the same serve Seles hit on set point in the '95 US Open final. Glad that they were able to call it in here (rolls eyes)! Too bad there was no shot spot back then.

That ridiculous call at the uso 95 cost her the title. Seles ran out of gas after steamrolling the second set. Had the call been correct, she would have won in two sets :( both that and the FO98 are big regrets

Hard to tell from these highlights but the first set of this match was excellent. Huber really acquitted herself well. Seles wore her down and the second set was very straightforward.
I watched this match live. Anke almost leave Monica by leading 3-2 40/30. But stucked by so many deuce and finally Monica win the game become 3-3 and Monica broke Anke Serve and grab 1st 6-4. Anke lose the momentum at the second set and finally lose easily from Seles by 6-1. If Anke win 4-2 in the first set may be will be another story. May be Seles still win but in rubber set. Luckily Seles win this tournament otherwise she will lose all grandslam title after stabbing 😭. Seles should win USO 95 and FO 98.

Was good to see Seles get rid of a German in the final. A bit of closure after what Germany did to her.
It isn't true that Monica was no longer the same after the retourn. In 1995/96 played very well. She came back Great. Some problem came after for the dealth of her father, for the food desorders and for opponents stronger than before. However we were all very happy for this her victory in Australia. Personally I didn't think that it would be her last Slam.
What did monica use a two handed forehand? Her one hander here in moments seemed much more powerful and effective
Monica learned to play tennis as a child using a two handed forehand. Later coaches tried to change her but it felt unnatural so her father said let her play the way she feels most comfortable.

@HearthSide Agree with you. She was a very capable player and underrated in my opinion. I always felt sorry for her being in Steffi’s shadow all the time, and she likely felt a lot of pressure because of that. She didn’t have to be another Steffi - she played some good matches and did well in her own right. Strange how people are so keen to put her down.

Gawd Gary is the WORST commentator - how he ever had a career is beyond me. He’s clearly watching this match solely through the lens of wanting Huber to win. And even from that perspective had nothing to offer. Useless.
