Thanks for the great video, dan! Struggling understanding intervlan routing but was easily able to listen to your video in the background while performing the same lab. Thanks, again!!
i tried the video and has been struggling for quite sometime to notice that the interfaces led status between the router and the switch has been red all the time. The video was helpful to guide you all but left out one simple step. When you do no shut on the sub interfaces, you need to do no shut on the main interface as well. instead of just int fa0/0.1 no shut, make sure you have done int fa0/0 no shut as well. That was the last piece of the puzzle to why some tried out and didnt worked. The person who created this video skipped out this one last step.
Thank you Darkskies Vincor for the 0/0 no shut tip. I knew I was doing everything correctly. I was racking my brain wondering why my connection was still red. And his was green before he setup the sub interfaces & the enc dot1q. Mine works fine now thanks to your tip.
Excellent Video, thank you for explaining it in simple manner. Have you got any videos on how to do ACLs and how to setup NAT? I’m studying for my CCNA, so i have been reading a lot but these videos back up the theory, i find that people explain things in different ways. This suits my learning style.!
I replicated this tutorial command by command in Cisco Packet Tracer and came across a discrepancy which was not shown in the tutorial but I had to correct in mine. For some reason the port fa 0/0 on the router was showing as down as were the sub-interfaces. As soon as I put a no shutdown command on fa0/0 it and its sub-interfaces came up and the expected ip routing table was displayed. Weirdly! However, I love your tutorials and have learned so much from them. Thank you.
I might be wrong, but it seems to be a bundle of different links into 1 with each link still retaining its original properties, hence less interfaces needed.
Hi Dan, when u configured port f0/24 as a trunk #switch port mode trunk u didn't add this command #switchport trunk allowed vlan 10,20 how we can ping and we didn't define vlan 10,20 for the trunk mode ?
at 12:40 my networks do not show they are connected. the router just says the 'gateway of last resort is not set' line and then goes straight to route#
One minor thing, prior configuring the Router, both the pcs are in different subnet - 192.168.1.0 and 192.168.2.0, how they can ping each other without a router?? Is it really the VLAN seperating them or the Subnets not allowing ping to reach one another?
Hey dan I am completing the CCNA-3 Final test file on your website, in part 5 you've asked to Set S0 to be prioritized to 4096 and S1 to be 8192 my question is for which vlan should it be prioritized ? since the command is "spanning-tree vlan "??" priority 4096.
In Packet Tracer there are only managed switches. There are switches out there that have a web interface and sort of a limited management ability. They can still support things like VLANs, trunks, EtherChannel, and QoS
Thanks for your video, I have just one question in the router config when your configure the sub interf and you type "encap dot1q 'number' " like 10 in your network , should this number be essentially the vlan id 'number' ??? What happens if I enter a number different than my vlan number or Id
Elmehdi, the number has to be the VLAN number, the number is telling the router to route for that VLAN (VLAN 10) using the encapsulation type of dot1q. You can't use just any number. It must be the VLAN number.
David Ratkay subinterfaces on a router enable to encapsulate and isolate traffic from one vlan to another ---->2 differents lan on the same switch can communicate only if router allows it with ACL's
Yeah just type into the google search field 'download Cisco CCNA Packet Tracer and then download it from which ever link your security package tells you is safe!!
It can be realized by using a Layer 3 switch. Dan used a router because he is using a layer 2 switch in the video. Layer 2 switches only understand Mac addresses and not 'IP' so he used a router or he could have used a layer 3 switch.
on your router configuration you never show if we have to configure interface fa0/0 you just do the other inbetween interfaces.... need some help cant get vlans to talk to each other
great video..thanks But i did not understand why: 1)we use vlan to separate network which are already separated (they don t belong to same network) 2) without vlan and connecting 2 port from router to switch..the result will be the same..so why using vlan?
1.yes its same network :) 2.u not able to get internet with this switch its to reduce broadcast flood in the newwork. vlan is designed for big companies for internet providers etc no for home users.
i've been figured out whats wrong with it. i did the "no shut" command on main int fa0/0, and it all turn green. but still i can't ping beetween the two pc. now i know. thanks a lot dude, i missed a simple thing that can confused me a lot more time :D
192.168.1.100 will not ping to 192.168.2.100 before adding them to different vlans because they are in two different network before adding them to vlans so he lost me there.
Is there a way to have 2 layer 3 switch setup with vlans. Vlan10 is a data vlan, the default vlan 1, and vlan 5 setup as the native vlan. The trunk is setup and I can ping between the 2 computer in that are in vlan 10. Without any routers involved, can I have computers in vlan 10 receive a DHCP address from a Windows DHCP Server? Any computer that is on the default vlan 1 can receive an IP Address without any problems, but any computer connected to VLAN 10 cannot received a IP Address.
hi ... 10k u 4 ur lesson .. i have a Q .. what is the different between access and trunk ? and do we always do mode trunk in router ? if yes what mode we do in the HUB .. 10K u again ... i need ur help
what if i want both networks to connect to cloud, but not communicate to each other? currenty studying IT and im preparing for my higher courses in january
Yes, something's missing. He didn't show how he configured the port24 on the switch as a trunk The port on the switch that connects to the router is configured as trunk for both vlans to communicate
Man, is it possible to reach you as an instructor, somehow? My instructor is mark einfeld (he says he's familiar with you), but you are super methodical, and don't just race thru things.
Grate but I think there is a problem with your config, because in the real experience you can not set up a trunk on a switch port before encapsulation and I did not see you do that. Actually the ios will not allow you to set a trunk before.
Just like to say your videos are the best I have seen on the web and the most helpful; thank you.
one of the best guy on You Tube if u wanna learn CCNA ... lots of respect sir :)

Thanks for the great video, dan! Struggling understanding intervlan routing but was easily able to listen to your video in the background while performing the same lab. Thanks, again!!
gotta say your explanations really are crystal clear - you are an amazing teacher.
The best tutorials ever! Dan is amazing in explaining these topics! Respect!!!
Probably the best I've seen. Great JOB !
I love this youtube site. thanks guys i am learning a lot from you.
best teacher in youtube
brilliant, you're much more better than my lecture , I will subscribe to all my classmate
gives clear understanding on inter vlan routing and router on stick.. best video for inter vlan routing
thanks
Thanks. You are a very good instructor. Thanks.
You are really great! I like your tutorial a lot. Thank you so much for your time.
Thank you, I've been trying to do an inter vlan since yesterday.. finally I got it..
Thank a lot Sir...it helps me a lot..!!and finally I can get ping in inter vlan..
Your video was very helpful and clear to understand. thanks
thank you, your explanation is really straight forward. helped me a lot

well done sir
Yes go something like "int fa0/0...no shut" than "int fa0/0.1....no shut" than "Encap dotq1 10"...so on
i figure out the missing step but i made 5 VLANs and still not work
what i shout dow ?
not pinging
Thank you Darkskies Vincor for the 0/0 no shut tip. I knew I was doing everything correctly. I was racking my brain wondering why my connection was still red. And his was green before he setup the sub interfaces & the enc dot1q. Mine works fine now thanks to your tip.

THANK YOU FOR YOU, IT WAS VERY HELPFUL . THANKS AGAIN AND GOD BLESS, MIKE

Thank You So Much It Helped Me!!!!
Your presentation is excellent thank you
Thanks for your clear explanation!
Thanks bro! Really, really helpful!
Thanks very much for your video. :)
Thanks for this beautiful tutorial.
Thanks you for wonderful explanation.
simply clear. thank you for this tuto
Excellent video. Thank you.
Exactly what I needed. Nice and clear, Thank you. Just wish the screen was full-screen,
Thank you very much, great tutorial.
Nice tutorial - Thank you!

this is great! something i plan to implement soon. is it possible to assign the sub interfaces to use a whole subnet instead of just one IP address?
Hi Dan,
when u configured port f0/24 as a trunk
#switch port mode trunk
u didn't add this command #switchport trunk allowed vlan 10,20
how we can ping and we didn't define vlan 10,20 for the trunk mode ?

It is the subnet that not allowing them to ping each other, to train VLAN he could use same subnet.
@@Kamrul-ITManager mind explaining more plz i didn't get you , i had same problem , i'm confused as hell now :/

Very nice tutorial, Thanks
Thank you very much ...very helpfull
awesome video.. thanks really really
Hey dan, in this video we not configured switchport mode trunk allowed vlan 10,20..
still its pinging 2.100... how??
awesome dan thanks for that video :)
excellent video thank you
Awesome vid, thank you
Thank you for this sir, nearly went insane.
What i dont get, is why the router isnt having a ip and what is the purpose of the subinterface ipaddress3s. Are they the gateway for the clients?
is it possible to interconnect two or more vlans without uses of router
What is the trunk and its purpose?
Sorry if its a dumb question lol
thank you, very nice!!!!
if i have more than one switch, do i need to add the same vlans to each one? or one vlan for each?
Its up to u..even u can add more than 1 vlan on 1 switch..
Is Cisco Packet Tracer able to configure any switch regardless if it's a managed smart switch or not?
In Packet Tracer there are only managed switches. There are switches out there that have a web interface and sort of a limited management ability. They can still support things like VLANs, trunks, EtherChannel, and QoS
Many thanks for the fast reply! I guess I'll have to upgrade my current switches. BTW, I'm hooked on your vids. Keep em coming!
what about the default gateway of the vlan?
thanks so much!, good job!
Thanks for your video, I have just one question in the router config when your configure the sub interf and you type "encap dot1q 'number' " like 10 in your network , should this number be essentially the vlan id 'number' ??? What happens if I enter a number different than my vlan number or Id

Olawale Anikulapo thanks a lot mate !
You haven't mentioned the gateway address that needs to be set on the PCs.
GreenLight: I connected my router to the switch and I never got the two green lights. Do you know what the problem could be?
Thank You
Its clear
Hi, Just to know, If i have more laptop with fa(s) in a vlan how shall connect them?
nice video. I got this working.:)
So why do you use sub-interfaces instead of normal interfaces?
David Ratkay subinterfaces on a router enable to encapsulate and isolate traffic from one vlan to another ---->2 differents lan on the same switch can communicate only if router allows it with ACL's
how to get this simulation software for configuration.
pls help me........
The software is called Packet tracer, if you enter a course with cisco you typically get it free. Im sure you can find a free version somewhere though
Yeah just type into the google search field 'download Cisco CCNA Packet Tracer and then download it from which ever link your security package tells you is safe!!
Mohan Ravi Download utorrent, then go google piratebay and click on like search packet tracer on piratebay website. download and you should be good
very nice!
what if you want to configure an E1 circuit via this method can you do sub interfaces ??
can i ask a question? what is your router ip address sir ? Thanks
Thanks for this brh
thanks for your information
very help full
Dont we need to assign ip on switch for vlan? 😶
Excellent.
i didn't get that GREENLIGHT i did the config 3 times but not showing at all and i am not able to ping at the end help
so, without a Router, a interVLAN can not be realized?
It can be realized by using a Layer 3 switch. Dan used a router because he is using a layer 2 switch in the video. Layer 2 switches only understand Mac addresses and not 'IP' so he used a router or he could have used a layer 3 switch.

on your router configuration you never show if we have to configure
interface fa0/0
you just do the other inbetween interfaces....
need some help cant get vlans to talk to each other
why you use fastethernet 0/24 on CLI?
ooh i see, thanks..
Whats the diffrence betweens switches/routers numbers? I mean, why 2811, not 1941, 1841, etc etc, can you explain it to me please?
Hi, how can you ping from pc0 to pc1 when you have to different network IP?
As you can see the ping is not successful. He is just showing that they cannot communicate with each other.
Did you actually own a gtr in Japan???
Very nice...
great video..thanks
But i did not understand why:

1.yes its same network :)
2.u not able to get internet with this switch
its to reduce broadcast flood in the newwork. vlan is designed for big companies for internet providers etc no for home users.
Would like t correct one thing that without giving default gateway to the pc's ping won't work.
Thank you
i've been figured out whats wrong with it. i did the "no shut" command on main int fa0/0, and it all turn green. but still i can't ping beetween the two pc. now i know. thanks a lot dude, i missed a simple thing that can confused me a lot more time :D

Yes, something's missing. He didn't show how he configured the port24 on the switch as a trunk
The port on the switch that connects to the router is configured as trunk for both vlans to communicate

You forget configure the trunk configuration for allow vlan 10 and 20 in the switch.

i did exaclly as u did but my fa0/0 is red it wont go green
You need to turn the port on enable>configure terminal>int fa0/0>no shutdown>CRTL-C>return key.
something I messed up on...dont forget to add the default gateway IP on the PCs
and it says gateway of last resort is not set in ip route
Is it posible to connect that to another router? how? could someone help me whit that? :(
thank you
