  • I found this headstone because it was calling me. A two year old boy with Alge all over it. When I started cleaning I soon realized that this was the headstone for both a boy and his 17 year old sister who both died that same year in 1888.
    In this video I talk about speaking with township trustees on permission to clean the headstones and techniques that I am using, plan to use or want to use in the future. Includes cleaning gravestones with D2 Biological Cleaner, Orvus, Wet & Forget and my new pump sprayers.

    I wouldn't mix D/2 with anything else as you have no idea if it will have a chemical reaction to each other. I found D/2 is the best you can use with the best results and you have caused no harm. I use small garden spray for the D/2 because as you say you can control the spray pattern and coverage much better. I tried wet and forget here in England and for me it didn't work so sticking to D/2. We have a big grave locally with a big white marble statue, they tried to "clean it" with brick acid and now it is slowly desolving as the acid that soaked deep in to the pourous marble desolves it. Another great job and two more souls remembered.

      Thank you as always. I appreciate your insight. I really do like the small sprayer bottle for wetting the stone. If I can mark one, I might even use one for the D/2

    • @cmg6848
      @cmg6848 Год назад +2

      @@graveconcerns I use the small spray bottles for the D/2 as i buy the gallon jugs which is more cost effective and as you say if you can control the coverage you don't waste D/2. Again just my personal preference is to spray the D/2 on from bottom to top and the only reason is to see what i have and haven't sprayed. I found the spraying from the top down made it difficult to see what i have and hadn't sprayed due to the D/2 running down the stone. It's just personal preference really but here is England a gallon of D/2 is £61 or $78.50 so any way of saving wastage is always good.

    If you decide to be a purist on cleaning these various stones, might I suggest using rain water instead of city water. Even river water would be better. City water still contain chemicals that could react with various stones. Great job, good to see you have found a passion that gets you motivated to get out and moving. Pat on the back to you, sir!

    I'd put wet & Forget in the bucket to clean. At least it penetrates the stone. Orvus is just a surface cleaner but it's so weak.

      @@graveconcerns some people pre-treat with W&F, but in my region it is a waste of money. Your region cleans up nicely I think if you used orvus first to get the biological gunk off of yours first then treat just once at the end with D2 you’ll be fine. It took me awhile to get on board with Orvus, but it definitely saves my D2. I mix my orvus up in a spray bottle so I don’t have so much stuff to carry around and that works well for me. We also have very soft water here and that produces too many suds to try to rinse in a cemetery. There is a video about the correct ratio to mix in a spray botte, using distilled water (again, that helps control my suds and I get plenty of suds using the distilled water) but depending on your water you might not need to do that. However, I have seen people clean with W&F like you do with D2 that have produced good reults. You can experiment using it that way and it might do well for you, but spraying and walking away....I don’t see a benefit. I am currently experimenting with one that I don’t go to often with W&F though. We have sprayed it twice and in the Fall I will see if it helped me out by doing so. It’s a large marble headstone and it has the black mold all over it. Hopefully it killed the biological growth and I will only have to do one good cleaning on it (usually I have to do those twice). You’ve got all of the right ideas though. It’s just a matter of seeing what works best for you!

  • @anitaludovici2859
    @anitaludovici2859 Год назад

    Orvus did nothing for me except take off surface dirt. It doesn't touch algea. I even tripled the amount used and mixed with water and still the same. D2 seems to be the champ. But wet and forget does work it just takes forever. I am inpatient. I want them white within a few months and I didn't see any difference with wet and forget after 4 weeks so I sprayed again and I'll wait another 4 weeks.

    • @HappierHeadstones
      @HappierHeadstones Год назад +1

      That’s my deal with W&F too. However, the Orvus is supposed to just take off the surface elements...this way the D2 doesn’t have to work through that too. So instead of the initial cleaning with D2, then spraying again when done, you have saved 1/2 of your D2 by using Orvous for the intial cleaning. It took me a while to get on board with that, but it’s saving me D2 for sure and giving me the same results. That Orvus is dirt cheap for as long as it last, like forever. (I am impatient too, but I have seen people scrub with W&F rather than just walking away from it getting decent results..but not me)

      I have been using Wet & Forget to clean and the spraying again with D2. I also 50/50 D2 with water. So I'm saving on the cleanings and last spray. I love D2 but can't solely use it anymore since it's so expensive. Good luck. Love the videos.

    Again, I've tried both wet and forget and D2. Wet and Forget is not as strong as D2. I don't much care for it. I'd rather dilute D2 with 3/4 D2 and 1/4 water and it does the same thing and last longer.
