    Afternoon Robert, Love your rescued dog, Hopper and please give him a gentle Hug for me. So happy to see this video and that you have been using, in some cases, the D2, for cleaning some of the older headstones. I understand that it is pretty expensive but so glad that it works as well as I have seen it work, on the other Robert's videos and on other videos as well.I agree with you on the chose you made with driving on the country roads, will take a bit longer, but the scenery is so much nicer and more relaxing. The Gated community we live in is surrounded by nothing but farms, and I love driving down the country roads more than the Route roads. Robert, think it is time to give up that green shirt and move on. Like you a lot better in another other than that green shirt.

    You are so right that you never know who you'll run into at a cemetery. I was visiting my father's grave back in the 1990's, and struck up a conversation with a nice couple just behind my dad's spot. It turned out that they were sprucing up their daughter's grave, and she was a victim of the serial killer Coral Eugene Watts. He confessed to several murders to gain immunity from the death penalty, which meant he was also eligible for parole. Those lovely people could never escape from that *!@#&^^! because they always had to keep an eye on what the parole board was doing. This was some ten years after the crime, and they'd already had to testify before the board to keep him locked up. I'm just glad he finally died in 2007 and pray they lived long enough to know he is finally erased from the earth.

    I can only say what I did here on England when I cleaned my family graves. Wet the stone thoroughly with water then spray on the D/2, let it sit for around 20 minutes then scrub the stone, while scrubbing wet the area the brush is then rinse the stone off. Once it rinsed spray again with D/2 and leave it foe a while. Like the stones here in England yours seem to suffer more from staining than biological growth so just keep cleaning the stones. Depending on what the staining is it may not come out completely but will be a big improvement and help preserve the stone. You are doing a great job.

    • @AdventuresIntoHistory
      @AdventuresIntoHistory  Год назад +6

      That’s about how I’ve done it. With enough time and gentle scrubbing the D2 has taken out stains for me before. The Samantha Street stone I cleaned is my personal biggest D2 success.

    I've noticed some people skip watering the stone before using the D/2. They don't understand that it helps saturate the stone, helps the D/2 get in deeper & when washing with a brush cuts down on friction on the stone. The stone should be soaked with water before using the D/2. And it doesn't have to be a heavy coating of D/2 to work. You still use the D/2 straight, but soak the stone with water first. A large pump bottle of water and a regular spray bottle of D/2. And if you know it's going to rain, put a plastic bag over it for a day. Rsi. Or not if you use water to soak the stone first the D2 will keep soaking into the stone and reactivate every time it rains. And it will keep working for months. If you understand that you'll stop thinking in terms of it being washed off and it will work better.There are great videos on this from numerous conservationist organizations. Thanks for keeping these people's memories alive and maintaining their stones. (I'm sorry if I sound frustrated, but I don't understand why people skip the water soak,use do much D/2 and don't understand it stays inside the stone and works for months if prepped right.)

    I would say don't wet the stones before putting D2 on them. Just spray it on them dry. Then wait a couple hours and come back and brush them with a wet brush. If you wet the stone first, and then spray it, the D2 is immediately diluted, or just won't soak in. Anyway, it's nice that you guys are doing that. I can think of two old cemeteries here in South Jersey in which every (or nearly every) gravestone is completely black. It would take armies of volunteers with D2 to clean them up.
    Interesting about the peanut harvester guy.

    Whoa, husband of Lou M born 1886, was 20 years younger that his wife Lou born 1847? But yet his stone just notes him as J.C. not J.C. Johnson. Dies around age 20 more or less when she would be 40 more or less. Did the stonemaker make a mistake, and Lou just let it ride? Let us really adventure into history, this looks like an interesting family to research! What county did you find this cemetery? Great work as always.

      This idea isn't uncommon and many cemeteries are like this sadly (including the even name on the headstone! I have a family headstone here of Leonarda when the name is Leonard 100%. My family at the time did not have many to pay for a new stone, so it was just kept that way on the headstone, but the burials records are correct for -him- at least. Many are "hear say" and may of "hear say" didn't hear right or forgotten all together what the real date/year was and just went with it as the family probably did not have money to remake it. This is why to never rely on headstones as they are often wrong all together.
