Suggestion: Do a rubbing (on paper) of the fireplace backing in your daughter's room. It's not hard to do and, if it turns out nice, you can frame it and hang it somewhere. Look for rubbings for relief sculpture for ideas.

My mother in law had a plum tree ( she lived in Switzerland). She would freeze her pitted plums and then in winter stew them slightly and put them on ice cream she had added cinnamon to. In the winter this was a great dessert, I enjoyed it every time.

Really interesting about the history of your property. I hope as you find interesting things about it you share that. I'd love to see what the old chateau was like. Your garden is doing really well. I've wondered if peaches can really be grown up here, I don't recall seeing any in my part of Normandy. The chateau's (and old chateau's) history is so interesting. I'm still trying to wrap my brain around the locations .... So the old chateau was pretty much right next door to the present chateau, and it closed off the fourth side of the secure square of buildings? The old gate and carriage entrance are fascinating! You said you thought they were wooden doors, but might they have been iron? Imagining the owners holed up in their chateau/buildings/small courtyard, trying to survive on their walled garden produce and worrying about invasion from without -- that makes the heart flutter! I hope you're all better soon. Safe travels!

This variety of small plums is called Mirabelle in France. There are a lot of them (the yellow ones) in Lorraine (it's a specialty there: 80% of world production). You can do anything with it: jams, tarts, brandies... It's delicious.
I had never seen red ones. Your trees seem self-sufficient, robust and generous. You should keep them.

I'd wonder what had happened! I look for your videos weekly. I've enjoyed watching you rehab the gorgeous chateau. Feel better soon!

I am glad you are feeling better! Don't know where you will be traveling in the States, but prepare for very hot weather. It has been running 90 F and hotter middle south and east coast.
