You’re right I’m watching this and having a good laugh. The trick is, there is a short bolt in the front of block. You take it out and put one of the fuel pump bolts in and that is what holds the fuel pump push rod up.

He took the AIR pump out so (if memory serves) the short bolt is not there and he'll have an oil leak. Another problem with those years are bad pump push rods that love to eat the cam.

I was a vehicle mechanic in the Air Force for 20 years. The old 6.2/6.5 diesels on the Humvees and M-Series CUCVs (M1008 Chevy Pickup and M1009 Chevy Blazer) had mechanical fuel pumps. We would put thick grease on the push rod and slide it back in (doesn't hurt to turn the engine so the push rod can be fully inserted). Stays in place so you can put the pump on. Saves a lot of aggravation and avoids getting the rod jammed and broken.

Which the wifey would be even more angry about, but would change her mind if you let her take the first test drive. If thare’s anyone who could do in Mike will do it. I pulled a fifth wheel to Yellowstone in 75 and going up I80 towards Laramie I couldn't get out of 3rd gear. Today I pull a fifth with my Denali Duramax. I went over the Bighorns in August. Cole down here got in the comment about the bolt. One thing about small blocks of that era, a 9/16 fit most of the bolts. 7/16, 1/2, 5/8, and 11/16 got the rest of them. I'd give that rottenchester crummyjet a Viking funeral and put an Edelbrock replacement on. A good set of equal length headers and dual exhaust would make the truck really scream.
I've had good luck with asking whether my wife would rather I collect tools and equipment or blonds. Works as long as there is not a "none of the above" option.

There is an older Cadillac carb that I found and used to sell ti the hot rod guys that didn’t have all the vacuum lines. It was a Quadra jet that was a little larger for the 500 ci cars. The old part number was a Q78. I haven’t looked in years for the cross over. But, it was also the cheapest part number we had by a large margin. It was great. Saved people 300$ over an edlebrock in the early 2000s. I enjoyed this video more than any other because it reminded me of old times. Thank you guys.

Not sure if anyone helped you with the fuel pump trick or not but before you take the old one off, there's a bolt on the front of the block that lines up with the push rod shaft. Remove this bolt and install one that's 1/2 inch longer. The end of that bolt will hold the shaft in place while you pull the pump off. Replace the original bolt after you've installed the new pump.

filmed in July viewed in October. Months after you already solved the issue. The trick with a small block chevy fuel pump is the take the flat plate off and remove the plunger and coat it with a thick layer of grease. then put the plate back on . after it is running again the engine oil will melt the grease into the crankcase like it was never there. There usually is a bolt along the side of the block that can be removed and replaced with a slightly longer bolt that will jam nut plunger up out the way. Just remember to put the original bolt back or you will another set of problems to fix. If the block is hot the grease trick will work less well

I discovered a bolt on the block adjacent to the fuel pump that must be tightened to hold the fuel pump rod before removing the old fuel pump. Do the 3/8 bolt on the front of the engine. Remove it and insert a longer bolt. Push the push rod up finger tighten the bolt. Install the fuel pump. Take the longer bolt out and replace with the original bolt.

on the front of the engine block on the right side of the block down low there 2 bolts one on top of the other .you can remove one and replace it with a longer one it will hold the fuel pump rod up so you can replace the fuel pump . then replace the short bolt and your done.

I’m really conflicted about who to be more afraid of: the wife or the snake. Both are equally dangerous and not to be trifled with.

On the 350 Chevrolet, there is a bolt on the front of the block you take out. With the rod pushed up all the way use one of the fuel pump bolts to put in that front bolt hole and snugged up just enough to hold the rod. Put pump in and one bolt on them pull the bolt holding rod. Replace bolt with the short bolt on front of engine or you will have an oil leak.

If I remember theres a bolt on the front of the engine that you take out and put a longer one that will hold the fuel pump rod in place.

Love those square bodies! Got one too! Mine's a Johnny Cash version! 77 frame, 83 cab, 68 camero 350 engine, 4 barrel Holly carb, a transfer case and a hydraulic dump bed! That thing'll climb a tree with the granny gear 4-speed! Mines Red, but I love that brown/gold version! Here's a prediction: It'll be a Gunner Truck, in a few short years! Great video! Lots of laughs! Thanks Mike & Aaron! Lee
