I think it's safe to say Clint everybody love's junk to gem restores. We all love time lapse portions too. You guys are good at it. But, we also love to see the process of cleaning and making new all the parts from sandblast to paint. As well as the repairs. Love you and Kevin at it. Kevin's antics behind and on camera are fun too.
Had a friend with a masters in mechanical engineering overhaul a John Deer tractor engine. 4 cyl gas and couldn't fig out why the oil pressure was low. After completely tearing it own again, someone with a lot less education asked if he bothered to check the oil bypass located near the filter....duh..lol!
Back in the late 80's picked up a used army K5 blazer. SNAFU must have been the norm because someone left the air cleaner lose and a family of mice moved in. Long story short, every cylinder was packed solid with mouse house materials. After a total rebuild, new wire harness, new fuel tank, hoses, belts, tires, etc.,etc., etc., she ran like a dream. She had a whopping 63,800 miles on her. Sold her to a buddy, he drove it as a daily driver for well over 20 years. He still owns her, she's parked in his shop collecting dust these days. Tried to buy her back but he isn't letting her go. She now has over 300K miles on the meter. Starts and runs like brand new. Should have never sold her!
I'm proud of you,Clint. You bought Kevin a kitty Cat to love and call his friend. The comparison between the 850J and the D6R are very similar, except accessibility and being acustom to working on them. It's nice to see your dad in more videos helping lately as well.
These diagnostic videos and what will be revealed have us glued to our screens and are just great! Kevin with his humour, continuous smile and laugh are just great too!
I bought a 644h from the army with 25 hours on the loader, it was a will not start will not run, I got the machine home and let’s just say it was a little critter that had some wires for lunch in the cab, about 15 dollars in wire and a couple of hours labor and it was running like a top. Good luck on the d6 I hope it’s not to bad, great video and keep them coming.
You never know what kind of surprises you'll find with something like this. It takes a special kind of "not my dozer" to leave the fuel cap off and then they don't even at least throw the final drive shafts in the cab or something. Makes a guy wonder about how these things come about sometimes, but you and Kevin will get the kitty purring again.
I had a Rusty dozer tank that was also full of Algae... Took a hot water pressure washer and just ran the hot line into the tank filler neck.. then took a 375 air compressor with a blow bar on it.. went through the sight glass with the blow bar and SENT IT! blast it out and re filled.. did this like 10 times... 180 degree water... The tank had baffles which made it harder but I came out victorious lol... Left the blow bar in at the end for an hr and a half, half cracked.. used the hot air to dry out tank... No more plugged filters!!! 💪
as I'm captivated by vehicle repair videos what's evermore apparent is the NEED for reading/research/learning for each specific application. Some research is more involved than other. Moral of the story: learning is ongoing and eternal If school teaches you anything it's HOW TO LEARN. The chapter: "Theory of Operation" must be digested as needed.
That 6R is a nice operating machine. The steering and shift is all on the one lever. Push forwards for left pull back for right. Shift by twisting. Middle in neutral. Do not leave idling with safty lever engaged or torque converter overheats. You have a very good veiw. That is even wired for satalite GPS to pull programed grade on road building or pads. That transmission is a fairly easy rebuild also. Even a new operator can run that easy. Once they get used to deacselerator. The track turn is by speeding up the track on one side.so you always have power pushing your dirt both tracks.
It’s good to see you guys working through a machine that you are not used to. Whether it’s a Deere or anything else it’s always fun to watch you guys work through it and bring it back from junk to a great working machine.
This is going to get interesting. I know the right guys are working on the CAT, it will get done right when it does get finished. Its starting to look like a whole lot of little, (not cheap), gremlins are at work. Thanks for the video, enjoyed watching.
Clint, that is the kind of video I enjoy from you, searching for the issue, nice job, And a warning a friend Tony was standing on the second rung of a stepladder, and he fell about 30 inches, broke his ankle after surgery it got infected, he was seen by a specialist in Cinny Oh, the second surgery didn't work and he lost his foot, Tell Randy and the rest of the guys, a 30 fall changed my friend's life forever

In terms of what impressed me about it's operation was that for a smaller dozer, the thing had more 'ass', could push more dirt physically than anything near it's size. It reminded me very much of watching a fully loaded 850 Deere which I'm sure you are quite familiar with. Trouble shooting and failure analysis is one of the best parts of being a mechanic! One of my mentors used to always say “Ain’t going to let this hunk of scrap outsmart me!”
working on my friends LMTV military truck there are always a bolt or two missing. The two idler pullies for the belts were missing the adjustment lock down bolts, they just overtightened the pivot bolts on the idlers to hold them. It had lots of electrical gremlins. Suddenly it would not move at all. We finally pulled out the biggest circuit breaker panel I have ever seen (the whole passenger side of the dashboard is a breaker panel) once removed we found 6 or seven major wire looms with chewed wires. luckily the mice did not eat the wires only the coatings so they were shorting to ground and each other. We had to reinsulate 20 or more wires and install a new breaker board due to all the mouse urine. Once we finished it started up and ran like a dream. another odd thing with this vehicle, all the wiring is white. not one colored wire loom on the truck. no wonder the mechanics go nuts with this stuff.
Kevin is a great guy but I do believe if he had any sense he took it out years ago and spent it. One day my wife and I will stop in and see you guy's. Love the show
Have a family friend who drives for Dollar General over the road. They give her all the miles she wants and since she has very few other expenses she takes a couple of months off every year. Loves it.
Here in Medaryville Indiana, there is NOTHING here, except for a Dollar general store, and THATS IT!! we’re about an hour south of Michigan City IN on US-421, the closest Walmart or Kroger is an hour away, but you’ll pass six Dollar Generals before you get to any one of them.
Yep, and that what makes dollar general a strong company. They went out to smaller place to build as well not just the city. They might not have 10 brands of each item but that have 2 or 3 and carry a lot of items.

Don't go completely knocking the DG stuff there Kevin. Its contracted and just in a DG can. I bought a can of their penetrating oil and it came out red with a sweet smell. There's only one red penetrating oil that is red and gas a distinct smell and that is KROIL.
Being in the repair industry, a customer drops off a foreign engine says it doesn't start AND LEAVES. OK, get a service manual, and it states - USE A KNOWN GOOD UNIT 😮. After ➡️'SEVERAL' ⬅️ known GOOD ELECTRONIC units, the engine started & ran 🎉. Now, was it the last GOOD unit or a combination of GOOD units 😮🫤 YOUR CHOICE 🤷 😊
Unless the specific unit has a lot of training and/or project work, they get minimal hours. Our combat engineer unit had D-7’s and other heavy equipment (1970’s in Germany). I kept inquiring about potential work, and would fine projects that we could do as “training”; tried to do the same itch our JD410’s and 2.5 Cy bucket loaders. Otherwise they would have had minimal hours. The M&S label makes me think it was used for base support rather than being assigned to an engineer unit. Also, the condition doesn’t lend itself to military unit maintenance (which in our case would never look than bad except in a can point.
We used to pull the final drive shafts on down dozers if we were going to drag them, but we also didn't pitch them... 😂 On the injectors, those harnesses are notorious for falling apart and the plastic on the connectors melting/distorting. The oiling system is like the 7.3 PS and 6.0, there's a low side and a high side. If the machine has sat for a long time, it can take a while cranking to get the high side with sufficient oil to get the injectors pumped up and the air purged.
I seen a guy cut a hole in a fuel tank to clean it out, hmm, who was that? Them pesky mice. Buddy had one eat up a bunch of wires on his ATV. What a mess.
Put circuit breakers in line with the injectors so you don't burn out another set. When problemdiagnosed properly restore the wiring. Injectors aren't cheap.
Now Kevin you know both sides of a GM tailgate are heated. The inside to keep your backside warm while you wait for a wrecker, and the outside to keep your hands warm while you push. 😂😂😂

I ran a D-6 M with finger tip steering loved it that machine was a dream to run 13.6 wide blade extra long tracks and wide pads. Once ya got use to the steering great machine to run.
Fuel Tank…. Cap it all off… pour about 20 Gal of Evap o Rust in there and seal it almost all the way up… let it sit. When you are done… the Evap o Rust can go into a large container for re use
I think the new thing for cleaning tanks is dry ice blasters. At least newest but I think that's a get inside type thing unless you can get a extension attachment for it.
We have 3 around little towns and there is Festus Mo and Crystal City which where PPG and they made flat glass and Desoto a rail repair yard and the Hillsboro the county seat and there’s 1 -2 around there and 1 in Desoto and then 3 in a 10 mile radius so we have plenty around here
Not sure if Cat has timeouts on the engine side but I have have seen solenoid wiring melt due to keys left on for extended periods of time. Usually the connection builds the most heat, and melts first. Same as like a headlight bulb connector, the plug and wire will melt before the rest of the system. Just a thought.
The D6R replaced the D6H in 1996, and came in five models ranging from the 165 hp (123 kW) D6R to the 175 hp (130 kW) D6R XL and XR, and the 185 hp (138 kW) D6R XL (IG) and D6R LGP. All used the Cat 3306T 6-cylinder engine.
We have Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Family Dollar stores. In summer time they usually have about 500 pool noodles outside ,on sale ,of the Dollar Tree . Very colorful.
We have a Dollar General here in Northern Calif. along the Pacific Coast, and Southern Oregon. We don't use they for anything! See: South Main Auto for electrical issues. He's really good at it!
Clean filter, clean oil. Hum Engine issue replaced both and still didn't run. Wonder if that is the NOOP issue. Maybe it shipped from overseas, and fuel and oils were drained.
I live in a city of around 52k, and we have two Dollar Generals on the same street, less than a mile from each other. My parents live in an upscale neighborhood of around 35k and they have a Dollar General Marketplace down the street from her home. She loves it.
Video started. ☑ Like button pressed. ☑ Going full screen. ☑ Starting running commentary. Here we go: • Kevin likes Cats. Awwwww. 😃 • 800 hours on a ~2006 Cat dozer? From what little I know, that's not even broken in yet. • Is it just me, or are excavators the most versatile machines? Digging, lifting, pushing. • You go, Jay. . .even if your a Ford man. We still support you. 😉 • Kevin is so safety conscious. . .bless his heart. • Mmmm, comes with Cosby sauce. 😃 • Missing Sun gears. Doh! 😵 • Yup, ahe's a sooter! • Well, she kind of fires with a sufficient amount of ether. Just need to get enough fuel and pressure in there. 👍 • Cylinder 1 clickin'. Cylinder 6 clickin'. Cylinders 2, 3, 4, 5 electric solenoids not clickin'. Gotta start opening up stuff, starting with the valve cover. Stop it, Clinton! You're making Kevin throw up in his mouth! 🤮 Poor, long-suffering Kevin. • Time to take injectors out. 🤕 • Yeah, something got hot. • Invoking Curt at Area Diesel Service. Good call. 👍 • Yep, looks like some damaged wires on the harness. Stupid rats/mice 🤕 • Ooooo, ordering some new injectors and a wiring harness. 😉 • Part 2 of the video for this dozer coming soon. 👍
Not many dollar general around here in Wisconsin. But that said i seen a new one in the last year. And yes it was in a very small town with no grocery store only a fuel station mini mart.
If the injector plugs are brittle, I would say it's been overheated more than once. Probably overheated bad more than twice. I've seen overheated vehicle turn clips in transmission brittle. I like these types of videos where you buy a non runner. I enjoy watching you all figure them out and fix them like new. In NC, we have dollar generals everywhere. They put them up in less than 6 month. Seems like about two months to thow one up.

Unsupervised teenagers can create chaos on half a million dollar machines. Or they can work miracles if properly supervised.
Why would you include the drives shafts for something going to auction if you needed them? It’s not always incompetence at the unit level

Look on the bright side there's no rocks inside the engine😉 looking at this Dozer looks like it's spent time in the desert🤔
Same here in North Carolina with Dollar General; our little town has a DG and they've just built a DG Market which has quite a bit of groceries.
The D6R is a awsome tractor, my friend has one from the 80s with low hours that has been great with no issues.
I think the new thing for cleaning tanks is dry ice blasters. At least newest but I think that's a get inside type thing unless you can get a extension attachment for it.
We have 3 around little towns and there is Festus Mo and Crystal City which where PPG and they made flat glass and Desoto a rail repair yard and the Hillsboro the county seat and there’s 1 -2 around there and 1 in Desoto and then 3 in a 10 mile radius so we have plenty around here
i got a friend with about a 1960 model cat 933 and its crazy how similar his sounds to this one when cranking and. running!
Here in north ga. we have a DG every 2 miles. Nothing else for 30 minutes away ,but DG everywhere.
Just crossed 2 years working on semi trucks, but man heavy equipment has always been an obsession of mine
high pressure and high temp steam cleaner would work really well to clean up the tanks. And whatever else needs degreased
DG is In every nook and cranny out here in Oregon too … 2 of them in my town of population 3400 , about 5 miles apart
I live in a city of around 52k, and we have two Dollar Generals on the same street, less than a mile from each other. My parents live in an upscale neighborhood of around 35k and they have a Dollar General Marketplace down the street from her home. She loves it.

• Well, she kind of fires with a sufficient amount of ether. Just need to get enough fuel and pressure in there. 👍
• Cylinder 1 clickin'.
• Yeah, something got hot.
• Invoking Curt at Area Diesel Service. Good call. 👍
• Yep, looks like some damaged wires on the harness. Stupid rats/mice 🤕
• Ooooo, ordering some new injectors and a wiring harness. 😉
• Part 2 of the video for this dozer coming soon.
