Back in the late 80's picked up a used army K5 blazer. SNAFU must have been the norm because someone left the air cleaner lose and a family of mice moved in. Long story short, every cylinder was packed solid with mouse house materials. After a total rebuild, new wire harness, new fuel tank, hoses, belts, tires, etc.,etc., etc., she ran like a dream. She had a whopping 63,800 miles on her. Sold her to a buddy, he drove it as a daily driver for well over 20 years. He still owns her, she's parked in his shop collecting dust these days. Tried to buy her back but he isn't letting her go. She now has over 300K miles on the meter. Starts and runs like brand new. Should have never sold her!
I think it's safe to say Clint everybody love's junk to gem restores. We all love time lapse portions too. You guys are good at it. But, we also love to see the process of cleaning and making new all the parts from sandblast to paint. As well as the repairs. Love you and Kevin at it. Kevin's antics behind and on camera are fun too.
It doesn't get any better, Clint & Kevin troubleshooting a dozer.❤
Just made lunch (Korean chicken), sat down looking for something to watch.. bingo.
Diagnosing a mystery is fun to a point... Thanks for bringing us along and explaining what you find!
Had a friend with a masters in mechanical engineering overhaul a John Deer tractor engine. 4 cyl gas and couldn't fig out why the oil pressure was low. After completely tearing it own again, someone with a lot less education asked if he bothered to check the oil bypass located near the filter....duh..lol!
Hope you’re state New York. It is about the same as you got down there. Every little hamlet has one.
You never know what kind of surprises you'll find with something like this. It takes a special kind of "not my dozer" to leave the fuel cap off and then they don't even at least throw the final drive shafts in the cab or something. Makes a guy wonder about how these things come about sometimes, but you and Kevin will get the kitty purring again.
Unsupervised teenagers can create chaos on half a million dollar machines. Or they can work miracles if properly supervised.
Why would you include the drives shafts for something going to auction if you needed them? It’s not always incompetence at the unit level
No risk, no reward. That's is why you are so successful. Thank you for the vid!
In all fairness, these are the best videos. You and your team are great detectives. Thanks for sharing your expertise
I'm proud of you,Clint. You bought Kevin a kitty Cat to love and call his friend. The comparison between the 850J and the D6R are very similar, except accessibility and being acustom to working on them. It's nice to see your dad in more videos helping lately as well.
You guys will get it fixed. You always overcome. Love the channel.
I had a Rusty dozer tank that was also full of Algae... Took a hot water pressure washer and just ran the hot line into the tank filler neck.. then took a 375 air compressor with a blow bar on it.. went through the sight glass with the blow bar and SENT IT! blast it out and re filled.. did this like 10 times... 180 degree water... The tank had baffles which made it harder but I came out victorious lol... Left the blow bar in at the end for an hr and a half, half cracked.. used the hot air to dry out tank... No more plugged filters!!! 💪
Buying used stuff is gambling without going to a casino. It's a challenge.
Unless the specific unit has a lot of training and/or project work, they get minimal hours. Our combat engineer unit had D-7’s and other heavy equipment (1970’s in Germany). I kept inquiring about potential work, and would fine projects that we could do as “training”; tried to do the same itch our JD410’s and 2.5 Cy bucket loaders. Otherwise they would have had minimal hours. The M&S label makes me think it was used for base support rather than being assigned to an engineer unit. Also, the condition doesn’t lend itself to military unit maintenance (which in our case would never look than bad except in a can point.
You never know what you’re gonna get with them Army dozers. but one thing for sure Clint will figure it out. Looking forward to the next video.👍👍👍👍
as I'm captivated by vehicle repair videos what's evermore apparent is the NEED for reading/research/learning for each specific application. Some research is more involved than other. Moral of the story: learning is ongoing and eternal If school teaches you anything it's HOW TO LEARN. The chapter: "Theory of Operation" must be digested as needed.
I bought a 644h from the army with 25 hours on the loader, it was a will not start will not run, I got the machine home and let’s just say it was a little critter that had some wires for lunch in the cab, about 15 dollars in wire and a couple of hours labor and it was running like a top. Good luck on the d6 I hope it’s not to bad, great video and keep them coming.
What auction did you buy it from
@@GITRDUG27 from iron plant before riche brothers
I think Clint should take a look at the electrical wires like you did. 5 injectors going bad at one time would be pretty odd.
These diagnostic videos and what will be revealed have us glued to our screens and are just great! Kevin with his humour, continuous smile and laugh are just great too!
Don't go completely knocking the DG stuff there Kevin. Its contracted and just in a DG can. I bought a can of their penetrating oil and it came out red with a sweet smell. There's only one red penetrating oil that is red and gas a distinct smell and that is KROIL.
Love your Work Clint , Kev, and very interesting job on this Cat D6R Dozer .
Have a family friend who drives for Dollar General over the road. They give her all the miles she wants and since she has very few other expenses she takes a couple of months off every year. Loves it.
I really enjoyed operating a D6 LGP back in the 90s like that style, though I also operated the older style D6 too.
We enjoyed the video. Looking forward to part 2.
This is going to get interesting. I know the right guys are working on the CAT, it will get done right when it does get finished. Its starting to look like a whole lot of little, (not cheap), gremlins are at work. Thanks for the video, enjoyed watching.
Clint, that is the kind of video I enjoy from you, searching for the issue, nice job, And a warning a friend Tony was standing on the second rung of a stepladder, and he fell about 30 inches, broke his ankle after surgery it got infected, he was seen by a specialist in Cinny Oh, the second surgery didn't work and he lost his foot, Tell Randy and the rest of the guys, a 30 fall changed my friend's life forever
Dollar general is in every corner of central Florida as well ! Wish us luck with this hurricane headed this way
I just finished all my hurricane preparations. Took a shower 🚿, relaxing watching Sausage Fingers.
Operated Cat 966-D 3306 for 12 years,Great machine 1983 lot less wiring and lots of room to work on. Thanks for the Cat video.
That 6R is a nice operating machine. The steering and shift is all on the one lever. Push forwards for left pull back for right. Shift by twisting. Middle in neutral. Do not leave idling with safty lever engaged or torque converter overheats. You have a very good veiw. That is even wired for satalite GPS to pull programed grade on road building or pads. That transmission is a fairly easy rebuild also. Even a new operator can run that easy. Once they get used to deacselerator. The track turn is by speeding up the track on one side.so you always have power pushing your dirt both tracks.
Great stuff. Happy you're in the business and happy I'm not. C&C YT is must watch as far as I'm concerned.
That was a great deal. Not as good as the Taliban getting $2B worth of equipment for free, but still a great deal.
65B bruv
Trump wants it back
All of that is not with them anymore. We paid them again so they would give some of it to the new unit there called ISKP.
I fill the filters with fuel before installing less air gets in system
Yeah I agree I think little kritter chewed wires that have power going to injectors shorted them out. Burned keepers.
I remember a few guys while in the army who never had a operational vehicle. I think they sabotaged them, so they did not have to go to field problems and work… It was always pulling engines and major components.
Not only is there a Dollar General, there may even be a Family Dollar store right next to it😆😆.
gotta admit Clint, I love thwese no running to restore videos. interesting how you and Kevin troubleshot things and process of elimanation!
In August of this year there were 19,400 Dollar General stores in the US. Great video. Y'all will have that D6 like brand.new in no.time.
FYI: On aircraft the screw on oil filter must be safety wired in place to insure that the oil filter can not back off and leak while flying. .
Brilliant, another "will it run" video. Hope it does guys.
Hey Clinton, It's a little early for all tricks and no treats!! I foresee a 6 part video series coming to You Tube starring a dead CAT! Have Kevin paint it black! Thumbs up!! Stay safe. Jim
Trouble shooting and failure analysis is one of the best parts of being a mechanic! One of my mentors used to always say “Ain’t going to let this hunk of scrap outsmart me!”
The D6R is a awsome tractor, my friend has one from the 80s with low hours that has been great with no issues.
It’s good to see you guys working through a machine that you are not used to. Whether it’s a Deere or anything else it’s always fun to watch you guys work through it and bring it back from junk to a great working machine.
good evening . We also have a few C9 engines that the injector wiring harness often breaks. good luck
Cats are king!!! The Porsche of heavy equipment. Most all our gear at work is cat and I feel very fortunate to get to run it and we’re not stuck on crap gear
I know exactly that sinking feeling in the gut when your worst fears are realized. Keep on plugging away. We are pulling for you.
Kevin is a great guy but I do believe if he had any sense he took it out years ago and spent it. One day my wife and I will stop in and see you guy's. Love the show
Buying and working on inop army stuff is a choose your own adventure, you never know what you will encounter and which creative ways these guys have found to F** things up!
There is a DG 7-10 miles around here in Western NY. One town, Clymer NY refused to let them in, They were protecting their local grocery store. Problem with DG, no fresh vegetables and fresh fruits!!!
73’s from Sherman NY
DE N2JYG
They have them here in Florida
Big problem with DG is that they run local grocery stores out of business. It happened in Sherman and if you try to open one near a DG, they will under charge for the same thing and DG has no fresh vegetables and fruits.
DE N2JYG
Bossman sure knows the ropes in this dozer work.He allways knows what to doooo.Good work gentleman....
Dollar General are the same on the east coast my friend. We literally have 4 in a 5 mile radius! Love the videos! Thx!
If it's a mistake, I'm bettin' you can fix it cheaper than most. I've witnessed this model of D6R in serious action. Cripes was that thing a beast and a half. Made a normal D6 look like a pansy. Do your best & I bet it turns out. Thanx.
In terms of what impressed me about it's operation was that for a smaller dozer, the thing had more 'ass', could push more dirt physically than anything near it's size. It reminded me very much of watching a fully loaded 850 Deere which I'm sure you are quite familiar with. In terms of quicker track wear, that sort of makes sense because smaller sized tracks are going to wear quicker being stressed so. Thanx
Clint, Kevin, Uncle Scott, Sr. and master blaster Randy - that's an all action lineup....
The D6H was the last of the ‘good’ Cats with the near bullet-proof mechanical 3306 engine. Once they went to computer controlled they went down-hill.
Great video Clint ,Kevin and everyone else in the video hope you get it running Guys!!!
You guys are amazing. You are not afraid to tackle anything. I know you’ll figure it out.
And you don't have to use tools! lol, ..Kevin You Rock! Lov ya guys! Here we go! Coffee on! Cheers!;-)!
Yes it’s not what should happen, but it’s sure is fun watching, and I love this, it is a great day to see this , thanks you Clinton and Kevin,, thanks BigAl California
I'm not surprised Kevin is interested in Uranus.
😂😂😂😅
just gives a whole new meaning to him having sausage fingers now, dang it, im gonna log off and sit in the shower and cry a little while now.
Coffee cups aside, this is video is right up there.
I was having one of those days today but when I clicked on your video of you and Kev-Dog it ended much better!
Spot on Kevin about fords!!!!😂😂😂
I know Chevy is last on the list but who's 1st and 2nd between Ford and Dodge?
Kevin got a good eye !! He’s finding all sorts of problems to fix Job security 🤣🤣
Sure y’all will have it purring like a kitty cat 🐱 before long
Love your troubleshooting!!!!
Following this channel is like the proverbial "Box of Chocolates",
Love to see the commitment to keep these great machines running. Fantastic engineering went into these machines.
Kevin should have a great career on the stage, the first one out of town 😂🏴👍🏻
Love the vids guys. In the last two yearws we had several new DGs and a couple of Dollar Trees
I really enjoy the hell out of watching you get these questionable buys up and running and finding out what really happened to them very enjoyably watching the progress from beginning to end .
I thought that the dozer was a big un until I seen the size ov the bucket on the digger you was pushing that big ol dozer with ease. 😂👍
We used to pull the final drive shafts on down dozers if we were going to drag them, but we also didn't pitch them... 😂
On the injectors, those harnesses are notorious for falling apart and the plastic on the connectors melting/distorting.
The oiling system is like the 7.3 PS and 6.0, there's a low side and a high side. If the machine has sat for a long time, it can take a while cranking to get the high side with sufficient oil to get the injectors pumped up and the air purged.
Hopefully it’s just a short in the harness and didn’t overheat to the point of no return! Good start guys 👍
working on my friends LMTV military truck there are always a bolt or two missing. The two idler pullies for the belts were missing the adjustment lock down bolts, they just overtightened the pivot bolts on the idlers to hold them. It had lots of electrical gremlins. Suddenly it would not move at all. We finally pulled out the biggest circuit breaker panel I have ever seen (the whole passenger side of the dashboard is a breaker panel) once removed we found 6 or seven major wire looms with chewed wires. luckily the mice did not eat the wires only the coatings so they were shorting to ground and each other. We had to reinsulate 20 or more wires and install a new breaker board due to all the mouse urine. Once we finished it started up and ran like a dream. another odd thing with this vehicle, all the wiring is white. not one colored wire loom on the truck. no wonder the mechanics go nuts with this stuff.
We have the trifecta. Dollar General, Dollar Tree and Dollar Store on one stretch of highway
Those new Milwaukee tools are getting a good work out and looks like they are working 👍🏻🤩😀
Yep
Just crossed 2 years working on semi trucks, but man heavy equipment has always been an obsession of mine
Being in the repair industry, a customer drops off a foreign engine says it doesn't start AND LEAVES. OK, get a service manual, and it states - USE A KNOWN GOOD UNIT 😮. After ➡️'SEVERAL' ⬅️ known GOOD ELECTRONIC units, the engine started & ran 🎉. Now, was it the last GOOD unit or a combination of GOOD units 😮🫤 YOUR CHOICE 🤷 😊
I really like this show.I can't stop watching.Keep it up!!!
Clinton Kevin Randy and Uncle Scott great video! Thanks for sharing! Kevin
Put circuit breakers in line with the injectors so you don't burn out another set. When problemdiagnosed properly restore the wiring. Injectors aren't cheap.
Hope it goes well
That kitty can't purr yet, another episode coming soon
😺 🐱 😸 😽
To check for metal shavings, drop a magnet to the bottom of the filter,
pull it back out and notice the shavings.
Fantastic video,my uncle had one of these on his farm, for there size they were a awesum little dozer, excellent end result.
I seen a guy cut a hole in a fuel tank to clean it out, hmm, who was that? Them pesky mice. Buddy had one eat up a bunch of wires on his ATV. What a mess.
Look on the bright side there's no rocks inside the engine😉 looking at this Dozer looks like it's spent time in the desert🤔
If the injector plugs are brittle, I would say it's been overheated more than once. Probably overheated bad more than twice. I've seen overheated vehicle turn clips in transmission brittle.
I like these types of videos where you buy a non runner. I enjoy watching you all figure them out and fix them like new.
In NC, we have dollar generals everywhere. They put them up in less than 6 month. Seems like about two months to thow one up.
You have Dollar General and Alexander Shunnarrah, Esquire billboards every five miles in Alabama.
Fuel Tank…. Cap it all off… pour about 20 Gal of Evap o Rust in there and seal it almost all the way up… let it sit. When you are done… the Evap o Rust can go into a large container for re use
I watched the other two in this series first and then came back to see the rest of the show. I was not disappointed, just filled in the holes.

Starting running commentary. Here we go:
• Kevin likes Cats. Awwwww. 😃
• 800 hours on a ~2006 Cat dozer? From what little I know, that's not even broken in yet.
• Is it just me, or are excavators the most versatile machines? Digging, lifting, pushing.
• You go, Jay. . .even if your a Ford man. We still support you. 😉
• Kevin is so safety conscious. . .bless his heart.
• Mmmm, comes with Cosby sauce. 😃
• Missing Sun gears. Doh! 😵
• Yup, ahe's a sooter!
• Well, she kind of fires with a sufficient amount of ether. Just need to get enough fuel and pressure in there. 👍
• Cylinder 1 clickin'. Cylinder 6 clickin'. Cylinders 2, 3, 4, 5 electric solenoids not clickin'. Gotta start opening up stuff, starting with the valve cover. Stop it, Clinton! You're making Kevin throw up in his mouth! 🤮 Poor, long-suffering Kevin.
• Time to take injectors out. 🤕
• Yeah, something got hot.
• Invoking Curt at Area Diesel Service. Good call. 👍
• Yep, looks like some damaged wires on the harness. Stupid rats/mice 🤕
• Ooooo, ordering some new injectors and a wiring harness. 😉
• Part 2 of the video for this dozer coming soon. 👍
Not sure if Cat has timeouts on the engine side but I have have seen solenoid wiring melt due to keys left on for extended periods of time. Usually the connection builds the most heat, and melts first. Same as like a headlight bulb connector, the plug and wire will melt before the rest of the system. Just a thought.
LOL!!! Same thing here in the south with Dollar General i swear they build them in the most obscure out of the way locations.
You guys are impressive with your knowledge.
I don't usually work on heavy equipment, but I think the fact that Cat has put a big work light INSIDE the engine compartment should tell you you're going to have trouble! I haven't seen that on the John Deere units you've worked on... Love these troubleshooting videos though, I learn lots!
For a fuel tank- hot pressure wash, then flush with alcohol, which will mix with then and take any water out. Mechanics were always in scrounging my methylated spirits or isopropyl.
Same here in North Carolina with Dollar General; our little town has a DG and they've just built a DG Market which has quite a bit of groceries.
You were talking about Dollar General within 5 miles of my location. I have three in my area. There are no words
Wiring opens a whole can of worms, doesn't matter who makes it,all same on fixing it. I was a diesel mechanic for 40 years and like all engines, you must separate it from mind, look at it as one issue and you will see the light at the end of tunnel,if not sell it for parts
The D6R replaced the D6H in 1996, and came in five models ranging from the 165 hp (123 kW) D6R to the 175 hp (130 kW) D6R XL and XR, and the 185 hp (138 kW) D6R XL (IG) and D6R LGP. All used the Cat 3306T 6-cylinder engine.
I ran a D-6 M with finger tip steering loved it that machine was a dream to run 13.6 wide blade extra long tracks and wide pads. Once ya got use to the steering great machine to run.
Just like Toyota , Ford, and some GMC coil connectors, all the black ones turned brittle. White connectors were just fine.
Happens all the time, injector harness failure, and or injector connect failure happens on that system if you don’t change the oil
This CAT is no step for a stepper, you guys got this
