  • Welcome to the second episode of London A-Z, in which I visit a different part of London based on it's name. This week it's the letter B and that can only mean Barbican!! This place is an absolute must visit for any street/urban photographer as it's brutalist design leads to so many opportunities to shoot the lines, shapes and patterns and light and shade that this style of achitecture gives. Again I have decided to record this as a point of view video, so you will see what I saw on the day and hear some of my thoughts on the images as I frame them up.
    I hope that you enjoy the video!

    I agree, keep light minimal, not taking up half the frame

    Oh yes, that’s a special place photography wise. People would be good but for me the whole architectural approach is preference, emphasising on the light and shapes etc etc. This should be a project. Anyway C….erm…. Chelsea! All the best. Nice work again Gary 👍👍

    Great video! What a location that is. A Photographers paradise and the ultimate playground. Think I need to look more at light and shadow in street photography. I like what I'm getting when I go out but think I might need to look closer, some of these images are pure class. Great job👍

    Great work Gary. This used to be my work area back in the 70’s, Holborn Viaduct and the market and spent my lunch hours wondering about here. It has changed a lot since those days. Yes sunny days would have given more long shadows but you got some lovely images regardless. Thanks for sharing.

    Loving the potential of this series... being a Londoner in exile in Brum excited to see where you go. Loved the Barbican shots, spent some time there too... Great at dusk and dawn and would recommend a blue sky day too.
    You off to Camden, gotta be more interesting than Croyden or Chelsea, or Clapham? But what about China Town and Covent Garden
    Glad it's not just me that finds themselves saying wow out loud when a composition comes together...

      @GaryNormanPhoto  Год назад

      Yep, when you get a good composition, it'd be rude not to express it 🙂 I have already done videos at Camden, Covent Garden and Chinatown, so C (which is out imminently) is somewhere different

    I used to hate modernist/brutalist architecture but with it being continually torn down I'm now making an effort to shoot as much of it as I can. Not particularly bothered about anybody walking through it though. Its the same with blocks of flats. Nobody ever is going to think again 'I know, lets build a tall thin structure 30 floors high out of dodgy materials and stick 300 families in it'. I guess at some point redeveloping glass and steel office buildings into 'homes' will start to happen.
    It would be an interesting day to photograph the Barbican but after a while I think I'd start to feel a bit 'enclosed'. They don't call them 'rat runs' for nothing.

    • @GaryNormanPhoto
      @GaryNormanPhoto  Год назад

      Very true, I'd imagine that the Barbican centre was ridiculed in the 70's and 80's and now it's looked at with affection.

    Really enjoying this series already Gary, always wanted to go to the Barbican and spend a good hour or so shooting, preferably with nice light but like you said, we get what we get.
    I just don’t have enough time to go there when I do get to London, be great if I could spend a week just visiting the places I want to go, not that a week would be anywhere near enough time but I’d have a good go 🤣
    Stay well
