- Опубликовано: 2 окт 2024
- In this video I look at the Canon 5D Mk1 classic and the Canon 5D MkIV to see which camera has the best dynamic range and ISO noise performance. I also throw in the Canon 100D as a benchmark. Hope you enjoy it.
I have put together a resource page for the Canon 5D with a lot more information about the 5D Classic Mk1. Here is the link. ⭐️ bit.ly/5d-free...

Just to let you all know I really appreciate you using the links above. When you use the links I will receive a very small commission between 1% - 5% from the company I link to. It will not cost you anything extra to use the links (I will only receive a commission if you buy the product using one of my links above) This really helps me buy more equipment to review on this RUclips channel and gives me the time each week to make the videos.
Thanks for watching
kind regards Rich

In my honest opinion, while the 5D classic looks great for its age, shadows are definitely a little messy. You can see some noisy banding in the darker bits to the left of the image, I’m not sure what it is called. I have a 5D mkii and love it, but one day will definitely pick up a classic for the unique look the camera gives. Really enjoying your videos, Thankyou.
thanks for your comment, i still prefer the mk1 to the others
I’ve always found that the 5div/Eos r files have a strange sickly green/yellow tint to the images where the older canon sensors tended toward a yellow/pink…more like a Kodak look imho. Side note, I’ve maxed the ISO on the 5d and ran it through DXO Raw with deep prime. It gives the 5d new life in the dark. Highly suggest it.
5d4 files are very strange, just editing another wedding today
After seeing so many videos on the 5D classic, _especially_ yours, I finally bought one to venture into full frame. I shoot mainly 120 film, but have shot a lot with my trusty Canon T3i (600D) and a couple of L zooms over the years. I'm interested to see how the 5D compares to the T3i, being older but full frame, and figured I could leverage my existing investment in lenses. I also picked up the 50mm 1.8 II as a creative exercise. The camera was $200 in great shape, plus $55 for the lens, which seems like a bargain from the few images I've seen so far. We'll see how it goes! Cheers!
let us all know how you get on with the 5D
I think it is great that you are showing that you don't necessarily have to the pursue the newest to get good results. The 5D is 17 years old but can still do the job. At $200-300 used, it's a bargain for a beginning photog looking to get into the business and make a living, and probably enough for an enthusiast to enjoy for the rest of his/her life. For video, I think almost any modern cell phone is good enough unless clients want video specifically. If they do, getting an older Canon like a T3i could still fit the bill and then one would have a back up camera too.
EOS M with magic lantern for sirious filmmakers.
Thank you for the video, Richard. I would be grateful if you would include a 6D Classic into the comparison . I own a couple of 5D MkI and also a 6D MkI. Greetings
What amazing, D5 classic has more film look colour am going to buy one and new version lens and hope it will be boom😮
Thanks for the video Richard, I find the 'compare' functionality in Lightroom invaluable for these types of comparisons, hide the left and right panels, select the images you want to hit compare and then click 'c' (on a PC). Not sure whether that works on a Mac.
very nice video. 5d is keeping up. for sure mk VI is better DR but still for a 15yo camera it's pretty darn good.
i still prefer the 5d classic, i have been using the mk4 for a year now
Interesting video. thank you.
I have alswys found that using Adobe Standard VS Adobe colour affords more file wiggle room.
The Adobe Colour profile has been horrible on the 5D4 and 5DsR for me in the past. Latest one seems to of improved colour wise but I still prefer to work of the standard profile.
I still prefer the original 5D colours, skin thanks for your comment

Great video and good comparison. It’s crazy to think even a Aps-c Nikon D7500 beats the 5D4 comfortably with 14 stops of DR . I use canons and Nikons and my 6D 2 is poor DR despite being FF , many Aps-c Nikons and Sonys will put t to shame on DR , but I do enjoy my canons 👍
Great channel Richard.
I'm a headshot and property photographer in the UK and am still using the Canon 6D Mk 1 as my main camera which I bought back in 2013.
I'm thinking of picking up a 5D Classic for my outdoor headshots.
Can you recommend a CF card reader and the best place to get compatible CF Cards please ?
I'm using a mid 2011 Imac.
Thanks for your help.
I use a CF to SD card adapter in mine maximum memory is 32GB I believe, you will need to have a google. this link may help www.memorycow.co.uk/digital-camera/canon/eos-series/canon-eos-5d-mark-i-1-digital-camera
@@RichardBarleyphoto Thank you.
@@RichardBarleyphoto Do you sell Canon 5D's that you've personally inspected ? Thanks.
Hi, concerning the weird Lightroom Colors - Irene Rudnyk recently published a video on her editing workflow. She also directly commented on the fact that Adobe doesnt get the colors right from the RAW image. For import she´s using Canon`s DPP and then imports the file into Adobe Camera Raw (& Photoshop) for the final edit.
At least for Canon the colors do look more pleasant in DPP, even if only importing the RAW, compared to Lightroom. Maybe you can try that as well and see how it works.
Best Regards
Thanks for your comment, I will take a look
5dmk1 is better colour than mk4... Mk4 have lot of green (maybe tint) and flat? Brrr
5D mk4 tint is a real problem - my workflow is much longer with the mk4 than the mk1 -
Where else can we see a current video comparing 5D classic to 5D mark iv? I was at a colorful outdoor event Saturday with my RP and EF 85mm f/1.8 in bright sunlight. But I couldn’t see what I was shooting because of the evf (partly due to my polarized eyeglasses and mediocre vision). I went back to my car and switched to my 5D. Problem solved. Got some great images. But I shot too wide on some group images so not enough DOF. All I could see on that tiny lcd was the histogram. So no image review. On a mirrorless, you can monitor all aspect of your image but on the 5D you have to think and visualize. Bottom line: I think I am going to replace my RP with a 6D classic. 5D and 6D are a great combo.
keep going until you find a camera you love, i then keep it for at least 10 years. 5d classic is still the one for me
I'd love to see a low light test between the two. Like a picture taken in curch or at night. The 5D is not that great with high iso. But the noise is not too bad IMO.
mk4 is about 1 stop better than mk1, just used the mk4 for 16000 images at weddings. i am sort of happy ish at 3200 on the mk4 at 6400 hate it. mk1 one is fine at 1600 with lightroom noise reduction, 3200 its ok but i use alot of noise reduction
Any way to provide the files to look at? Thanks!
working on it regards rich
You just continue to live in the past you got to come in the future.. or show a better comparison because this is not good at all Lol 😂
i will give up
5D4 blows the classic out the water I don’t know what you’re looking at. You are definitely a funny person do not know how you are coming up with this when you can clearly see that the five before files a much better and have way less noise than the five the classic you gas to be a joke…
Why are you watching these videos since you already know it all? These videos are interesting and your constant comments are… Bland.
