    Bought an 8300 unit 2 years ago and it’s great. Looked into adding an AC unit to my central heating and the bids came in from $8000 to $10000 and that’s just for AC not for new furnace! So, I bought this at $450. You can still see out the window and it’s much quieter than the regular units I’ve used. I’m likely going to buy for my master bedroom as well. I can get three and cool my entire house for $1200 and then I can only cool where I need to and save money as these are MUCH more efficient than a central unit. I don’t notice a change in my electric bill. 😁

      We had 1 window unit in the main area, of a 3 bedroom home in the south. To be fair it did take the edge off the heat, and it wasn't as hot back in the 70's and 80's.
      Even when we got central air, my dad would keep it at almost 80. I can remember visiting family up in Chicago area, the house we always stayed at had no AC. Very cheap old woman, who was going to take every last penny with her. And it was miserable in her house, stuffy oven.

    I did some research on these saddle type units and while the Midea units were a better buy, I settled on the GE Profile due to my window design and installation options. Wanted the 12K BTU model but ordered it twice on Amazon, which cancelled both orders without explanation.
    I found a 10.2k BTU model online and it was delivered in 3 or 4 days.
    While my windows were considerably wider than the specs, all I had to do is buy some foam insulation materials for the wider installation.
    Needed this for supplemental cooling on days over 100 degrees here in TX....and has worked well. Nice to have in case of general power outage as well. May replace portable units I have for emergencies.

    Connection to WiFi gives you the ability to set a schedule and also see how much electricity the unit is using. Additionally you can control the unit and it will tell you the current settings and the temperature in the room. Setting a schedule is a game changer for me.

      Unfortunately this U shaped thing is useless for the windows here. Our windows are different so they can't be opened by thiefs.
      We currently have good insulation and clay walls instead. It is 10° colder than outside.

    I have heard about these units and researched them. They get top reviews. Here in the US they can be very expensive running into a few thousand dollars each. But I also found that units are available direct from the manufacturers in S Korea for about $350 to $400 each. Huge savings. It appears there are two main manufacturers.

    I think that any savings you get from shutting off the main HVAC for the house at night is going to be used the next day to get it back to your set temp. If anything, run it a little cooler than normal at night when it doesn't have to work so hard.

    • @HowTowithDoc

    • @sundoesshine8583
      @sundoesshine8583 5 месяцев назад +1

      That concept is false (I had always thought it was true too) One really does save by not keeping heat or ac on when not needed. We shut our heat completely off at night even in dead of winter.

    • @alis49281
      @alis49281 4 месяца назад

      Shutting it off at night and power it with solar during daylight...

    • @new2000car
      @new2000car 3 месяца назад

      Everyone here is making great points, accurate too. How to piece them together to decide, that's a little (not a lot) trickier. Running a little cooler than normal at night is easy on the a/c system (lower head pressure), and not much heat gain from outside, so it's cheap and easy on the compressor to stay cool at night. Plus it wouldn't run as much at night, so bumping it down (colder) will dehumidify better for better comfort. Furnaces up north in the winter, it is cheaper to shut off at night. Cycling all night long, paying to warm up the chimney, having that heat go away, then warm it up again, that costs money. But it is uncomfortable to sit on 40 degree furniture when you get home and wait for a few hours to get comfortable. I think you can safely say "how much do you really save by shutting off your system overnight?" because the answer may be "not much," but regardless of how much, there definitely is some savings.

      Make sure to use foam weather stripping around the unit. It's mostly there to seal around the window unit, but it will help with vibration. If the air conditioner is old, the rubber pads under the compressor may be dried up and rotten. I actually just used silicone caulk where the pads were, and it did a world of difference. Silicone is also quite heat resistant. Maybe, they make replacement pads. I don't know.

    Too bad these won't work as my wall is too thick. 2x6 walls with brick and stone sill plus interior trim sill pushes beyond the 13.75" limit.

    • @SoldiersDad

      I will hve to measure my window because I think it would be to wide for the unit. So the limit is 13.75 inches

      If the opening is tall enough, make a filler to go under the AC.

    Awesome video! Quick question, it says max window width is 40 inches. Any idea why? It looks like I could just make bigger foam pieces for a wider window?

      It has to do with provider gap filler foam. You will have to buy more for wider windows

    I heard you say, this window unit has a pump on it, that pumps condensation out. Does that mean it doesn’t cause a lot of humidity in the house? I have 1 regular window unit & 2 portable a/c units. They cause it to be a little too humid in the house. I need something that cuts down on the humidity. Will the U shaped window unit do that?

    I’m thinking of getting one of these for my master, which is upstairs on a 2 story with hardiboard siding. I’m concerned about the drip down the house and how in the world I’ll get it tightened up that far up, as I don’t have a ladder that will go that far up. What’s the drainage like? Maintenance? Possible to tighten it by leaning out the window?

    • @HowTowithDoc

      It can all be done from inside the house... we have no "drip run down"

    • @kkarllwt
      @kkarllwt 4 месяца назад

      It will have pump to move the condensate to the outside condenser. The fan will sling the water onto the fintubes to evaporate.There will be an overflow drain.

      Almost all ac units have a "drip hole" that comes standard plugged. You can remove the plug which is on the bottom outside. We had to drill a hole in an OLD unit that was not a GE.

    I have the 8000 BTU one and my main complaint is that you constantly have to keep an eye on the quality of the water and keep it drained so it doesn't grow and mildew so it doesn't clog up the pump. You can't just turn it off and let the water sit for a few days.

    • @17mightymo

      If you have a level, sit it on top and make sure it's tilted slightly down away from the window. If perfectly level or tilted the wrong way the condensation will flow towards the house. The instructions should cover how much tilt is needed. If that's okay, may need to see if the drain hole is plugged up. Good luck with it.

      *I've had the 10300 for about six weeks. Its been working like a charm!* The setup and installation is amazingly straightforward. *Just make sure you measure your widow correctly to ensure that these units will fit!* Don't make my mistake! *I watchied the GE installation video* (done with the smaller units) *and tried to (on my larger 10000 unit) extend the sections by myself,* I actually pulled it out/off of it's track ! *Was able to get it back in place in 5 seconds once I realized what I'd done,* but I suspect a little more force and I may have broken it! *Point being, on the big units, the* *"Extension" as well as "The Lift and Placement" is definitely a two man job!*

    question why do some of them say inverter on the GE unit

    • @steely_Bob
      @steely_Bob 5 месяцев назад +1

      Found this: Once the room is cool , an inverter air conditioner lowers the speed of the motor to save energy and maintain the desired temperature.

    • @kkarllwt
      @kkarllwt 4 месяца назад +1

      An inverter raises and lowers the cycles /pluses of the electric current ( 60 is standard ) to vary the speed of the motor. Maybe between 40 and 90 cycles a second. This allows the fluid output of the compressor to vary and raise or lower the rate of cooling.
