yeha I really wish scanners were oders of magnitude more detailed because none of them really cut it right now
Dental scanners are the thing for small stuff, none of these consumer, under 5000 euro scanner can detail such small stuff as in this hobby,
The only one you're gonna find that I've seen for smaller stuff is the Revopoint Mini 2
All of the cheap consumer ones suck. You need to spend thousands or tens of K to get a good scanner.
Another really great channel for modelling in Blender specific for 3D printing (which I will point out is a slightly different skillset from modelling for games. Games don't care about non-manifold geo but they DO care about everything being in Quads, by contrast 3D printing doesn't really care to much about stuff being in Ngons but it DOES care about stuff being fully manifold) is Artisan of Vaul.
Can't recommend him enough, through his various tutorials and such I managed to get my first ever custom made miniature 3D printed.

Ferret-Pro 3d scanner by Creality, whooa ooh ooh
This was a terrific video. I love the STLs you created. I used several in a diorama I made last week and had a lot of fun playing with them.
YO! i have at multiple points youtube searched for a video on this exact topic. Excited to watch!
Good video, I'd be very interested in you returning to this idea in the future 👍
I feel like 3D scanners are at the same stage that 3D printers were like 5-6 years ago. Ok with a lot of meddling but a long road ahead before they have their own out of the box and ready to wow us product.
On the K1c, this was an impressive example of what it can do quality wise. I’m currently looking at a new filament printer and my key criteria is minimal tinkering because with three kids aged 0-5 years, two of them with additional needs, I just don’t have the level of time needed to spend fixing issues. My current old workhorse anycubic mega s has served me very well for nearly 8 years now, but it’s been out of commission for nearly 3 months because I haven’t had time to sit down and figure out why every print started failing all of a sudden.
I’m now weighing up whether to get a P1S, or go fucking nuts and get an X1C that I absolutely don’t need. But I’ll admit the K1C was tempting. the reviews out there seem to suggest Bambu is still the winner in terms of reliability though. I’m so torn on this, I don’t think watching any more reviews is gonna help my decision.
Considering that commercial/industrial grade 3d laser scanners start at $2k USD the Ferret is doing pretty well when you look at it's price.
if you want the best experience with a 3d scanner
use a white base coat like you did
but add black freckles on top
preferably from a spray can that is not thoroughly mixed so it sputters the paint out , it works like a miracle
also you could try photogrammetry
takes more time but can capture crazy details if done right
cheers mate
Whenever I see a video from you, I have to stop what I'm doing and watch it immediately. Even if I'm in the middle of cooking, these noodles can wait 😂😂
Rust pigment powder < pan pastels. I have that same pigment and it's so messy and refuses to stick. Once I got the pastels my life got so so so much easier.
I just looked these up and nearly died. I'm gonna buy one or two to try, but holy shit this was an expensive comment you just dropped lmao.
DD Rust also needs heat for best results. Warming the model up with a hair dryer and letting the bottle sit in warm water helps a lot.
man!! 3D scanning is a super good technology, and I think it needs to advance more in quality, but of course, the way you have used this technology, I had never seen it or thought about it, I have to say I wanted very obvious, to do something simple with cardboard , plastics, etc., and scan it to give it detail, I don't know why I would never have thought of it but it is wonderful, the work you have done has been incredible, I think that in the not too distant future I am going to resort to this to scan some figures that I like them and save me a lot of work customizing them :), and who knows, offering extra content for fans in my tiers! hahah, thank you very much for your words about my work, keep it up champion!
Awesome video! I'd love to see you do an addendum covering scanning with the 3d scanning spray, as well as trying a bunch of different available apps.
Great vid as always!
Looks great. Yep, it can be a pain for home units. We can't all get access to Weta Workshop levels of tech, but every year home tech gets better and more affordable. I mean, the printers alone show how fast things bumped up these last 5 years.
Been really enjoying your vids since Poorhammer shouted you out and its got me interested in getting into 3d printing, do you have or will you be making a video on a best FDM printer for beginners?
Good vibes this vid, you’re hitting stride dude
would really love if you could do STL square bases for The Old World
I just love your genuine energy!!!
Scanning minis and terrain is awesome.
A few montjs afo i managed to get my hands on a dental scanner from my wife, she's a dentist, and there is no scanner on the market that can get to that level of detail, and with a fast scann process, one of my intercessors, i scanned it in 53 seconds :)) crazy.
I have a video on myn hannel for the curious.
Great results from blender. Makes me think I should give learning it another try.
I can't say it enough times. You are incredibly talented. Genius level. Your videos are outstanding
oh, what good timing. I heard about a scanner called the OpenScan Mini and the results look promising not to mention quite affordable for scanning, *cought* "terrain?". Ngl I print in 15mm and would love to scan certain minis that are only physically produced so I can scale it down and print for 28mm wargaming but at a more space/affordable size. In regards to scratch building, I would like to someday use 2nd dynasty's interior terrain to flesh out the interior of a scratch built space ship. Anyway, love your videos and looking forward for more.
love the content man. I just gotta say tho, I just bought a K1 Max and it has been phenomenal so far.
I am never getting that damn ferret pro 3 piece scanner by creaaality jingle out of my head....
honestly, i think the 3d printed rocks look more rock like (on camera at least) then the XPS ones
Omg that jingle is stuck in my head now
I have not seen erics channel, I'll have to check it out
That Selly's just looks like regular acrylic caulk.
watched a live demo of a this unit. you did great. unless you are going to spend AT LEAST $2500 or more for a PRO lvl scanner the gear is just not there yet. maybe a few years. for some reason the sw is subpar for the under $1000 range or what us normal peeps would be able to buy.
Love your newer videos :)
I find your lack of bun inclusion in this video disturbing...
But the STLs are awesome, and the idea is very cool! The scanner seems to be about the same as the old xbox kinect, but actually purpose built, instead of jury rigged, for the task.
I LOVE scratch built models. They just look right to me. But I don't love the PILE of trash that accumulates when I try to build. *tears* Using a scratch built model for inspiration is genius.
next, try the Revopoint Mini 2
Hey man, Does this scanner use laser or photogrammetry? If it uses the latter you can add some dots/random identifyable points to the point for it to anchor to instead of pure white.
yes it has marker mode, non-reflective one
The terrain you used as an example at 6:16. What terrain is that?
I was wondering, do you know any good places to get fantasy terrain STLS?
Cool. 👍
Hey where's the link to the Blender dude? I really need to study up

Those darn Bambu labs fanboys.
Peachy has actually just spun off to do his own thing away from ThePaintingPhase, in case you wanted to shout him out! www.youtube.com/@PeachyTips
Me thinks the painting phase are figuring out the only reason people watched was peachy. What a bone head move to push him out.
@@LSOP- It's quite shocking to me that Pat pushed so hard into the Podcast side, I loved it don't get me wrong, but they should've just made the 'Sidetracked' channel and let Peachy continue to go wild. As so many of their 'PAINTING' videos I still use. World Eaters one is how I did my combat patrol, I've used the techniques for Gallowdark too. It's wild
@@PewpewFiah their views have more then halved since peachy left. I know he was the only reason I watched.
Poorly printed terrain is better than pots and pans, noted.
