I currently have 9 safety razors in my collection and this is my favorite. I like collecting razors, but this is the one I shave with the most. The merkur 34c just strikes the perfect balance for shaving as a beginner and veteran. Merkur 34c paired with a feather blade, you don't need another razor.
The Merkur 34C was my first DE razor, the one I learned to wetshave on. It's a good razor. You get a close shave without the drama of an aggressive razor. It's also a nice razor when you're an experienced wetshaver. After 2 years of having mine, i still shave with it regularly.
Why is it that every safety razor is a beginner's razor on youtube? What constitutes an expert razor and why isn't there any videos online about those? I just don't get the 'beginner' thing. Anyways, I've been shaving with safety razors since I was about 15 years old (I'm 40 now) and this razor has to be one of the best that I've used. It is true that the razor is somewhat mild when shaving but you can up the aggressiveness with Astra or Persona blades. My whiskers are thick and tough like copper wire but the 34C with the right blades shaves like a dream for me (I've always use shaving cream and a pre-shaving oil if that constitutes for anything). Don't let the 'beginner' rhetoric turn you off to this. It's a great razor for veteran shavers too. BTW: This is a good video and I do like the detailed information.
We've actually done several other reviews of razors that we wouldn't necessarily recommend for beginners, such as the R41. The reason that most videos mention whether or not razors are good for beginners or not is that most people watching review videos are beginners looking for their first razor. That's because the market has been growing very rapidly!
I guess it's something I've been misreading on my part. Nevertheless, I do like the video. Has the market really been growing lately? If so, that's a good thing. In my area, I've only been able to order my razors/blades/brushes and good shaving creams online. Be great to find this stuff locally for a change (I live in a small town).

I have a 34C and there is absolutely no blade play. I have never heard of any youtuber or owner for that matter who has problems with "blade play" using a 34C. What's also interesting and contrary to my experience is that you gave de EJ DE 89 a more "points on aggressiveness (3) than the Merkur 34C (2). To me the EJ DE 89 is less aggressive than the 34C. Just my 2 cents ;)
There are no right or wrongs. I use Muhle razors but the R89 is like the 34C. Fine razor and I would say “forgiving” rather than plain mild. With a good sharp blade it works really well. I also have an R41 which is not so forgiving. If one has had a big night, don’t use an R41 the next morning or it will treat your skin like pastry and the claret will flow.

The "aggressiveness" is really down to the blade angle and how much guidance or freedom you get from a smaller or larger blade gap respectively. If you have enough control over blade angle and pressure, what razor you use doesn't really matter - the guard and the gap size are ultimately just crutches. The choice of razor blades makes much more of a difference, but again (unless you are going for absolute dud blades) you can compensate very easily by adjusting angle and pressure. I find that more "aggressive" DE razors are much more versatile in that you can definitely get a milder shave by reducing the angle whereas a "mild" razor's guard puts a limit on how aggressive you can make the blade's angle respective to your skin. The cap also limits how much freedom you have with your blade angle. At the end of the day and against the broader range of shaving tools, a DE safety razor fees like a shavette, or a vintage single edge safety razor, with training wheels.
@@peterkaufmann8579 The vintage Gillette razors rival the 34C imo. I own both the 34C & the 37C slant - both are exceptional. However, the Gillette Slim Adjustable, Super Speed and Tech all offer superb shaves, not to mention their engineering and build quality exceed anything Merkur puts out. Vintage Gillettes are constructed of brass, made to last for centuries. Merkur razors are made from a zinc alloy which doesn't compare for longevity. Give the vintage Gillettes their due.

Having bought one of these recently I will say this gentlemans review is spot on, specifically the aggressiveness. My first and only safety razor was an Edwin Jagger, and after my brother broke it I decided to try something new and get this thing. I was in disbelief at how unaggresive this razor was. It was actually incapable of getting my face smooth, even after a second go around AGAINST the grain. It is so mild I began to shave in a sloppy manner just for the sake of getting it over with, knowing full well it wasnt possible for me to cut myself with it if i I tried. I immediately got on my laptop and sought out the exact Edwin Jagger razor I previously owned as this 34C just isnt my cup of tea in either performace or finish quality. To each their own.
I've sold off almost all my razors, timeless, wolfman, above the tie and more. Why, because the 34C is the best overall razor ever made. Only 2 I kept was my Razorock game changer . 84p straight bar and my short handle merker progress. So I pretty much have all the aggressions covered if I want them. Please don't waste your money on getting into this obsessive purchasing. Cheers everyone.
Agree, this past year i sold several high end (+$200) razors because i get just as good a shave from my $30 Edwin Jagger EJ89, my $50 RazoRock Lupo 72 and my Merkur 34C

I just purchased the 34C and I've been shaving with it for a hot bit. I've been getting mixed results and so far I don't like the blades I've tried (Merkur and Personna blades). I just popped in a SuperMax after my last bad shave with a Personna. What blades would you recommend? Any specific shaving soap that you use? I'm using Proraso Refresh and I feel like I've got my lather technique down so far.
I encourage anyone to research Merkur chrome plating problems before spending money on any of their razors. I’m very disappointed with my 34c Heavy Duty which only lasted a couple of years before it became unusable due to chrome pitting.
I find it funny when people talk of "beginner" razors. Describe it at mild. Many people buy these to be eco-friendly, not to build up a collection of increasingly expensive razors lol.
Just because it's good for a beginner, doesn't mean it isn't good for someone who is experienced as well. It could very well be the perfect razor for you. The reason we recommend it to beginners is because it shaves quite mild, and is difficult to cut yourself with. the transition from a Cartridge to a 34C is not significant in terms of the careful technique you'd have to have if you started with a more aggressive razor like the Muhle R41
@@MaggardRazorsTV It actually is the perfect razor for me. I ordered it and got it just yesterday. It gave me the smoothest, closest shave I've ever had. The last one I used was the Weishi long handle butterfly razor. I don't think I will go back to that. Neither will I be ever considering aggressive ones like the one you mentioned.

For some the 34C is fine to never move away from. But, if you have a really tough beard and want closer shave in fewer passes, there are a multitude of options. Our brand (Maggard Razors) has a head called the V3A - about a 6/10 on the aggressiveness scale. Alternatively, you could look at Muhle for their R41 head -- or Parker's Open Comb 24C/26C, or an adjustable like the Parker Variant or Merkur Progress (51C). We sell all these on our site! good day! I have buyed a Merkur 34c HD razor today. I have seen on the cap that the screw, have the thread broken by two planes and on both sides. Is this en issue or low quality ? what do you think about ? thanks and best regards Giacomo
hey im struggling a lot with getting the tension ring back in, everytime I try to put it back in the tension ring is pushed back up. anyone have any tips
You may need to have a pair of pliers or something to hold that ring tight in the groove while sliding it into the handle. Once you get it started it should be pretty easy since the handle barrel will hold the compression ring in that groove.
The small tension ring has slipped down past the groove that is cut into the internal piece of the handle. You need to find that ring (it will almost look invisible if you're not looking for the seam in it!, and pop it back into that channel, then follow the video instructions to fit it back together.
2:20 Blade play?? I'm new, looking to get my first safety razor. Why is there blade play? Why is this acceptable? From the looks of that blade play, I can tell now, I'll never buy anything at all from Merkur. And I can't buy any razor online unless I feel it in my hands first. Disappointed.
I am surprised to only see it get a 7/10, with as much as everyone raves about this being one of the best razors to get... since when is 70% a good score? C’s may get degrees but do they give close shaves? Is there a better razor to go with than this ?
We tried to rate it based on build construction, grip, and other tangible things to come up with the rating. There are many DE razors on the market with superior build quality (Stainless Steel) and grip. So, we had to dock it a few points. Our rating is not taking into account the shave that a razor will deliver. The shave will always be very subjective and vary from person to person. It could be a perfect razor in terms of function for one person, and frustrating for another. This is a milder razor, so, that means if you don't shave often or have a very tough beard it could take several passes to get to completely smooth. Can it get there? absolutely. But there are some razors that can do it much quicker / less passes (more aggressive heads). The trade-off is that they're easier to cut yourself with or could cause irritation to sensitive skin.

@@justseejason3857 If you're shaving daily, then, this would likely be a great razor for you. If you're an "every 3rd day' kind of guy, I might suggest looking at: Parker Variant, Maggard V3A, Parker 24C/26C. These are all slightly more aggressive and will cut cleaner with less passes.

Lee Khan, this razor is certainly a good choice (among others). But the right choice of a razor is not the solution to everything. There are still many ways of getting a bad shave with a good razor. For a great, enjoyable shave you need more than just a good razor.
It's all down to technique. Never drew blood using this or my Edwin Jagger DE89 razors. But did nick myself using my Parker Variant Adjustable on more aggressive settings. With practice and patience and improved technique, the Variant is now the razor I use most often.

It's not just a beginners razor, i have been wet shaving over 25-yrs and i often reach for my Merkur 34C
I purchased mine a couple of weeks ago and have used it two times. I love it. It works extremely well - I have very sensisve skin.

I pair my 34C with an Astra SP blade and get a fantastic shave every single time. Yet when I use a feather I always get a couple nicks or weepers.

My father gave me this with some feather blades. This should last a lifetime. A great piece.
