So weird that an apologist can claim that non-belief leads to or is equal to solipsism, when I think the opposite is true. If you believe in miracles, you can never know anything for sure. I, as an empiricist, can trust with relative certainty that my chair is indeed a chair and it will support me when I sit down. To someone who believes in the god of Abraham, that chair might turn into a bunch of snakes, or it might break when you sit on it to test whether or not you'll curse Yaweh, or maybe it's a delusion because your prayer life hasn't been strong lately. An unverified unfalsifiable deity that can do anything at any time, with or without explanation, is not a solid dependable basis for determining what's real.

As to "is anything real?", I go with: It just doesn't matter.
The universe *could* be lying to us, but it appears to be doing so in absolutely consistent ways. *Unless* there is a *way* to distinguish what we observe from *actual* reality, we are *forced* to accept our experiences as being *real* . Basically, we have no actual alternatives than to treat this as real at this time. That might be fundamentally wrong, but until we can *demonstrate* that it is wrong, there are no other choices. You can't just *guess* that it is wrong in the particular way you'd like, and then pretend that you can use that for some purpose.

No Eternal Encore? But I love that song! XD
Seriously, though, if someone speaks to me of a ‘basis for morals’, my mind turns to the actual reasons; arguments for why a moral should be accepted. If a child were told not to steal, but never learned any reasons why they should accept that rule, their adherence to that moral could be easily undone by any remotely convincing argument or circumstance. Having morals not based on authority means having to actually think about those reasons.
Ironically, what I see in this pastor’s video suggests a lack of moral basis on his part. I often see this shadow hovering behind arguments like these; the idea of ‘dishonesty is okay, because in my view, others are also lying’. This tosses aside a frequently accepted moral because of a circumstance, with little thought given to why, because the only condition was an authority and that authority has been bypassed with apparently little effort.
The problem, to me, seems to be that the authority in question is a ‘displaced’ authority; one that cannot be accessed by means that cannot be intercepted, influenced or imagined. This makes it very easy for almost anyone to appropriate that authority, and gain along with it the ability to deflect all responsibility to that displaced figure instead of accepting it. The more I watch this kind of debate, the more I can’t help but see the purpose of such belief systems as a mechanism to fabricate power that’s simultaneously free of responsibility.

I listened this Cleave guy quite a bit and came to conclusion he is really dishonest and doesn't even attempt to convince atheists, but reinforce his followers belief system. Only futility there is his reasoning.
His Pt. 4 has 12 likes in 12 days and you have 43 in 2 hours. Not trying to go popularity fallacy road here, but question meaningfulness of responding to this guy? I mean, he has pretty much no effect on anything having 384 subs, but I can see some worth to ponder these things in general. Btw, he surprisingly skipped certain Austrian painter in his list of atheist atrocities.
I didn't even remember how ridiculously absolutist he is. I kind of understand why certainty is so seducing, but it leads to binary idiocy.
About that "what is a woman" -question, I don't wonder anymore at all how impossible it is to creationists to understand what a species is. It is really difficult to define. But possible to a satisfactory level, women and species. What seems to be impossible to all, is to define "kind" as creationists use it. Also, it's hilarious when they realize I'm white, straight, male and an ally of the rainbow. They just can't seem to understand it's possible. :D
About the personal final solution: it's clear that victim blaming (where these idiots always end up) is part of the problem, not the solution. I've known quite a few people who made the last action and all of them suffered of expectations that they couldn't fulfill. It's really sad.

The danger of thinking that unless we take our accomplishments with us to some afterlife, we lack meaning, is two fold. First, thinking that life is just the prologue to an otherwise endless novel completely devalues the time we have here and makes people okay with just existing and not really living because the best part is yet to come. And second, when you think like this then this temporary existence is inconsequential because eternity awaits. Why care for the planet when heaven is next and its way better than this place. Why savor the moment when you have so much more and better to look forward to. It sucks the vibrance and color out of life when you think like a believer and it devalues your time and experience here and now as well as lifts the burden of ecological stewardship from the shoulders of the believer. I would not be surprised if some of these oil barons are religious people just trying to get the most out of life at the cost of the planet because why care what happens here when heaven awaits.
If you moved into a house and were told you get to live in that house for 5 years and then you will be moved into a much bigger and nicer house while new people come live in that 5 year house, would you even bother to maintain the first house or decorate it? But if you moved into a house not being promised anything afterwards, you would likely take care of the house you have not only for your self but for future generations to come. That's the difference between a person who believes in life after death and a person who believes this is the one shot we got, lets make it count.

Without money, you can not buy things. The fact that you *want* to buy things though does not allow you to *assert* that you have money when you do not. In the same way, the reality that you *want* to have an externally defined purpose does not make it true. Your desires don't make it so.

@@darkofalltrades I completely agree. So long as religion stays with the churches and isn't pushed into places where it doesn't belong (schools, government, healthcare, etc) we're absolutely fine. I also find it rather telling that the same people/groups that want to label things like science, evolution, etc as religions don't want to recognize some actual religions as legitimate (Satanism for example).

This pastor's approach really sucks. I don't think he's doing this intentionally, but it's like the classic grift of convincing us that we have a non-existent problem, then trying to sell us the solution.

The country I live in also had medically assisted dying. The criteria are that a person has to be likely to die in a year and is (I summarize) in acute pain. A number of medical processionals have to sign off on it. One of my friends had an acute disease. It attacked the nervous system. Over time he lost his ability to speak or swallow. He had to be fed through a feeding tube and had limited mobility. He choose to end his life. As he was much loved this was sad. But not as said as continuing to live.
Just on this image of God stuff. God is meant to be a formless entity. He is also all powerful and all knowledgeable. How does it make the slightest sense to say we are made in the image of God? In reality of course the old testament describes God as having physical attributes. Walking in the Garden of Eden talking to people and so forth. The formless stuff came later. But if you have the formless stuff then the image of God stuff breaks down

With most of these guys, it usually doesn't take long for cracks to start showing up, and you can see that his argument isn't his own, he's just regurgitating stuff he heard from apologists, most of whom heard it from other apologists. The moment I heard this guy say "fall into absurdity", I knew he was just parroting someone else, because the phrasing is too specific. I've heard it before, and I've only heard it from the likes of Low Bar Bill and Fallacious Frank. So this guy is either a Craig/Turek acolyte, or he's hanging around with Craig/Turek acolytes, and he's never actually stopped to work out whether or not these arguments are valid, they're convincing to him and that should be good enough for the rest of us. Really, this is one of many arguments for doing as much as we can to expose the charlatans for what they are, so at least a few of these drones might take a step back and notice how ludicrous they sound to everyone who isn't in their cult.

Do not be unequally yoked, it keeps the superstition alive and it stops people from getting to know each other, and that we're not evil for whatever we believe. If that makes sense? Sorry I'm rewiring my coded brain =)

It seems like they don't want others to learn about other religions. That is what ended up causing me to leave Christianity. I was studying to be a pastor, and I ended up meeting people who were part of a Pagan group, and they taught about other religions, including Bobism and Jainism. I had NO idea that these religions existed in the real world, and learning that others believed their religions just as much as I believed mine was eye opening.
