I’d love to see Final Cut get a AI Auto Captions option. Having to send my vertical videos to CapCut and back is just cumbersome and annoying. If it was built into FCPX I would use it all the time
My guess is we need the next OS is to be out for them to easily enable that and Final Cut Pro, the next set of operating systems by Apple releasing this fall all add transcription to like phone calls, Voice Memos, and the Notes app to the name a few.
I had just finished a project with a lot of slow mo, and mulitple cameras trying to match color within 20 minutes of seeing this video on my youtube page: time to update, go back, and re-edit! Some great additions and, as usual, you do a great job!
I love these videos which introduce the features of a new version of FCP. It's just the right amount of detail to tell me what new capabilities exist and how to go about exploring them by myself afterwards. Much appreciated - please keep them coming! - Martin

You seem to be clueless… Every Hollywood movie you’ve ever seen in the last seven years has been color graded in da Vinci resolve. No professional uses final cut to color grade unless they don’t know what they’re doing.

Great walkthrough. Guess what! In my fcpx the Enhance Light and Color does NOT have any short key attached!? In the Modify menu its also empty to the right of the text so there is no shortcut...

The new slo-mo feature is welcome... a definite improvement. I still see lots of artifacts, but far fewer than before. I hope it improves even more! The other new features are amazing as well. EDIT: Ooops, step-scrubbing through audio no longer works with the arrow keys. This is a huge bug for people who find audio precision important. Sometimes it will work but it's fleeting.
You will probably laugh, but I am currently using a 2015 macbook air to edit. LOL! it is an exercise in patience.... I do 20-30 seconds of edit, compound it and then join that to a few more like that, then once put them all in the same project... go to bed while it renders and most time wake up in the morning and it is ready (with a fan blowing on the computer all night). Though I can only watch a 1080 video on quick time on that machine so no 4k stuff output (can only view 4K in 12.5% proxy in project) I do NOT recommend it, but hey, we do what we have to do. Just ordered a m1max 32 GB and 1TB off ebay... I will let you know how different it is. I am currently doing some of the motion courses on your website, and I had to laugh as I could not render the projects (LOL!) Thank you for your videos, explainers and everything else.
Always great to see the boys together 🎉. For the ProRes Raw clip, does it make a difference if you apply your Log conversion before ELC or after? My would be to correct after since you would be working in a larger color spaces but can I get your opinion? Thanks!
Really nice additions. I hope for the next update they would consider to improve some other aspects such as masking, a better color grading and color management options with for customizable and more natural results, a better noise reduction, gyro data for stabilization... and a hopefully reduce the amount of memory required for retiming options and rendering clips, so far filling hard drives with several hundred of Gb of rendered files is the norm to me (and deleting them creates a lot of headaches when exporting).
Complex grades? Nobody really grades in final cut… Final cut is a joke compared to da Vinci resolve. Final cut is a granny editing system. It’s a joke.

You can import them - but they will always come in at their native size - you then have to place then in a 16x9 project then choose what part of the image is visible
7:28 I usually apply a LUT in the inspector, because this is the only way to have it applied within your browser too, so I don’t have to look at log all the time and guess what they will look like once graded. But the issue with this is that the LUT applied there is applied BEFORE any grade… So it is actually effectively reducing the dynamic range :/ So when comes the time for grading, I am removing the LUT in the inspector to re-apply the same lut as an effect, individually… Which takes forever ! I don’t understand why Apple is not applying this AFTER the effects 🤷🏽♂ Or even better, make it applies a Custom LupUT effective to the clip natively, the same way the now enhance light and color works 🤔
I would prefer an option to apply after the grade but if you have decently exposed clips, and aren't doing anything extreme in your grade, applying the LUT before the grade won't have any detrimental impact
Help with the new 10.8 in the old one I use to go to the top right hand corner where you upload and there was a save current frame and I did use this to make my thumbnail in the new 10.8 it is not there how can I do , thank you ?
I'm not getting results like you guys. Not for the auto color adjustment (makes my clips really flat) and the new ML smooth slo-mo is slightly better than old Optical Flow, but not by much, on my clips. But glad you guys get it to work perfectly. I must be doing something wrong.

Before the update if I double klicked on a color correction in the video inspector it jumped directly into the effect. Now after the update it always wants me to rename the color correction/effect. Does anybody know how I can change this double klick setting?
I swear that Apple announced something about the green screen masking being better. Like auto removal of background was better or something. But none of the videos talking about final card 10.8 have talked about that.
Apple has just given up huh? No transcription??? They could have been a pioneer with transcription 10 years ago with Siri and Dictation apps but here we are in 2024, Adobe and Resolve having released transcription a year ago. No to mention ALL the other features pros have been begging for for years so they can use FCP in a professional workflow/pipeline. Apple could be at the forefront of innovative editing software features. Instead they don't even bother announcing FCP updates at their conferences. So sad.

And let me be clear, my gripe isn’t with you guys, your video or your channel- I enjoy Ripple Training’s content- this just happened to be the first place I’ve seen the new version announced/explored (since again, Apple has decide FCP isn’t important enough to get even a mention in any of their keynotes/conferences while simultaneously featuring Resolve in their press material) and so it’s your comment section that received my gut reaction. Sorry. Major upgrades are supposed to add new features. Minor updates fix old ones. Besides Live Multicam, everything here essentially already existed in FCP. FCP for iPad 1. iPad Pro M4 enabled faster rendering and more streams. (Disingenuous as this is a feature of the M4 chip and not a new feature of FCP. Everything is faster on an M4) 2. Live Multicam. (Cool although I don’t know any professional productions shooting on iPad. Also, does it work on the Mac version?) 3. Being able to start and open projects on external storage. (This one is obvious and should have been in the original release of FCP for iPad considering the iPad had harddrive functionality years ago) 4. Apple Pencil Pro “barrel roll” for “live drawing” and “squeeze” to change brushes and settings. (more an Apple Pencil feature than FCP) FCP for Mac 1. Enhance Light and Color (I know they are using the buzz term AI here but it’s really taking a feature that already existed in FCP- “Balance Color”- and making it better. Appreciated but not exactly new.) 2. Smooth Slo-Mo (Absolutely welcomed but it’s making optical flow… better. Is that really new?) 3. Color and effect naming (This could almost be considered a bug fix. Premiere had this feature 10 years ago and people have been begging Apple for it for years.) 4. Search missing media and effects in Timeline Index (A genuine, solid feature. But really speaks more to the innovativeness of the Timeline Index rather than it’s increased functionality) 5. Expanded metadata search in the Timeline Index. (An obvious functionality update to an existing feature. Hardly game changing). It’s hard to imagine anyone jumping ship from Resolve, Premiere or Avid for any of these “new” features. And I know you guys have a relationship with Apple but can you honestly look at this list and think “next level”? A lackluster, minor update in a string of lackluster, minor updates for FCP. I’m starting to believe the Final Cut division at Apple is just one guy. And he’s part time. And leaves early. But only after a solid, long nap. Cheers and continued success to you guys at Ripple Training. I only hope Apple finds the drive it once had to make FCP an innovator for pro editors again.

At least they made an Update and in the last 12 months their were several slightly bigger updates(10.6.6, 10.7 and now 10.8) with several small but noticeable feature upgrades. They also said they have plans for Final Cut for 5-6 years. And they also just made a Camera App called Final Cut. Also they spoke at the Keynote that there will be a feature upgrade in the coming Autumn. All this shows that they support Final Cut. I think the problem is that they tried to save the iPad with Logic Pro and Final Cut which probably wont work. But for the last 1-2 years they had to built this iPad Version as well which slowed probably down the development. Looking at Logic they have now feature parity with the iPad and Desktop Version. Probably the try the same with Final Cut? If so then the development will become a lot faster in the future again. Also it make sense that they have no major new AI Features like Text Based Editing in it, because this will probably come when Apple Intelligence is out big time. But I understand you, I am also dissapointed in the features. Where is a better Keyframe Editor, where is some useable Final Cut to Logic Pro Workflow, where is better Color Correction(they should make it at least like Color Finale on Steroids) and where are some awesome new Apple Motion updates? I miss a lot, but still its the best editing programm. But if you need to do all in one DaVinvi is better and it doesnt need so many expensive external plugins. I use plugins for several hundreds of Dollars and its annoying. But still the editing is the most fun in Final Cut. It lets me be more creative and its faster. It just needs one major upgrade with several big updates and its up there again.
Hello guys! One question here after updated my FCP to 10.8 version: When I move the playhead using arrows keys (left/right) the audio is not skimming!!! If I move the playhead with my mouse/trackpad, audio skimming works fine. Audioskimming button is enabled and on. Is anybody knows what's going on or facing the same thing? It's very important to me to hear what's playing when I use arrows keys on my keyboard, that way I can edit sounds in a better way... Help!!!
I can confirm I'm not hearing audio skimming with the arrow keys here but I never used arrow keys to skim audio in the past so I don't know if that used to work that way.

I don't believe that's it's ever worked that way. I just tried it in FCP 10.7. It does not work. If you need that level of audio scrubbing, then hold down, the K and L key to scrub forward and the K and J keys to scrub backwards. This is the correct method for scrubbing audio without the skimmer.
@@rippleguys thank you for the trick, didn't know it. Just tried here and what happens: If I hold K and press L once, the playhead moves forward one frame, but I cannot hear that frame, if I keep pressing L (just pressing once, not holding), playhead continues moving forward without playing the sound. But if I hold K, press L and hold, playhead keep moving forward automatically and I can hear the sound. But that's the problem... I need to hear the sound frame by frame, like It worked before this update =(
So they dropped support for DVDs. Does anyone do deliverables? any tricks or methods with that. (USB drives?) my business needs to shift if that is the case.
Steve and Mark, why normalize clips before going for the "look?" Why not just go for the look? If you normalize and then do your look, and then change your mind about anything, you still have 3 or fo4ur or 5 effects that are going to have to be adjusted individually.
The whole idea behind normalizing is to get all your clips into roughly the same dynamic range and color balance so that once you apply a look you can do so with an adjustment layer to all your clips at once and it will be applied uniformly - if you don't normalize you'll have a heck of a time matching your shots.
let's see all the improvements that Apple will make or has made to fcpx if you don't have a Mac m2 or higher it's useless... well too bad, we'll continue with premiere... I don't have to spend money on the latest Mac model, I have a 2020 iMac and it works fine with davinci and with premiere.
I took it back. The glitch part has nothing to do with you. It's obviously Apple engineers that are doing this, but DO NOT UPDATE ! A YEAR LONG DOCUMENTARY OF 10 HOURS EDITING JUST TURNED LONGER. THE NEW 10.8 IS GLITCHY. You will get frames from other projects all of a sudden it sporadically throughout your timeline. It will seem like you have a body double that put in clips where they don't belong whatsoever!!!
I think color correcting in final cut is for babies… If you really wanna color correct you use da Vinci resolve. I do understand that Final Cut is for hobbyists and grandma… Where as da Vinci resolve is for pros.
I suspect you are not aware of the full suite of grading tools in FCP - trackable shape masks, HSL qualifications, etc. But yes Resolve is more powerful at the end of the day.

@@jobz9150 several big productions used Final Cut Pro 10 years ago already and it just became better since then. Also check out the work from Thomas Grove Carter to see the full potential of Final Cut.

I wouldn't apply a camera LUT for log conversion after ELC because that will distort the results since the LUT is expecting an unaltered LOG clip.

The enchance light and color feature does not leave the log clip in log format? or does it. It was very subtle.
Applying ELC is like any other correction you perform to a log clip
You can either add a LUT and then use ELC or use ELC directly on the Log clip - just like directly grading a Log clip without a LUT.

Still persisiting with 10.6.8 so my old 2016 Macbook Pro is still usable.

Instead of clicking the name, click the color triangle to the right - single click.
For pro res raw video footage I don't think we would be using auto correction. To make it cinematic we need the human eye.
It's a tool. Can be a first step in combination with manual grading.

FCP 10.6.2 is the last version that can be run on MacOS Monterey.

2. Live Multicam. (Cool although I don’t know any professional productions shooting on iPad. Also, does it work on the Mac version?)
3. Being able to start and open projects on external storage. (This one is obvious and should have been in the original release of FCP for iPad considering the iPad had harddrive functionality years ago)
4. Apple Pencil Pro “barrel roll” for “live drawing” and “squeeze” to change brushes and settings. (more an Apple Pencil feature than FCP)
FCP for Mac
1. Enhance Light and Color (I know they are using the buzz term AI here but it’s really taking a feature that already existed in FCP- “Balance Color”- and making it better. Appreciated but not exactly new.)
2. Smooth Slo-Mo (Absolutely welcomed but it’s making optical flow… better. Is that really new?)
3. Color and effect naming (This could almost be considered a bug fix. Premiere had this feature 10 years ago and people have been begging Apple for it for years.)
4. Search missing media and effects in Timeline Index (A genuine, solid feature. But really speaks more to the innovativeness of the Timeline Index rather than it’s increased functionality)
5. Expanded metadata search in the Timeline Index. (An obvious functionality update to an existing feature. Hardly game changing).
It’s hard to imagine anyone jumping ship from Resolve, Premiere or Avid for any of these “new” features. And I know you guys have a relationship with Apple but can you honestly look at this list and think “next level”?
A lackluster, minor update in a string of lackluster, minor updates for FCP.
I’m starting to believe the Final Cut division at Apple is just one guy. And he’s part time. And leaves early. But only after a solid, long nap.
Cheers and continued success to you guys at Ripple Training. I only hope Apple finds the drive it once had to make FCP an innovator for pro editors again.
@@genericuser7319 I mean you are not wrong, but I still have hope. At least they made an Update and in the last 12 months their were several slightly bigger updates(10.6.6, 10.7 and now 10.8) with several small but noticeable feature upgrades. They also said they have plans for Final Cut for 5-6 years. And they also just made a Camera App called Final Cut. Also they spoke at the Keynote that there will be a feature upgrade in the coming Autumn. All this shows that they support Final Cut.
I think the problem is that they tried to save the iPad with Logic Pro and Final Cut which probably wont work. But for the last 1-2 years they had to built this iPad Version as well which slowed probably down the development. Looking at Logic they have now feature parity with the iPad and Desktop Version. Probably the try the same with Final Cut? If so then the development will become a lot faster in the future again. Also it make sense that they have no major new AI Features like Text Based Editing in it, because this will probably come when Apple Intelligence is out big time.
But I understand you, I am also dissapointed in the features. Where is a better Keyframe Editor, where is some useable Final Cut to Logic Pro Workflow, where is better Color Correction(they should make it at least like Color Finale on Steroids) and where are some awesome new Apple Motion updates? I miss a lot, but still its the best editing programm. But if you need to do all in one DaVinvi is better and it doesnt need so many expensive external plugins. I use plugins for several hundreds of Dollars and its annoying. But still the editing is the most fun in Final Cut. It lets me be more creative and its faster. It just needs one major upgrade with several big updates and its up there again.

Hello guys! One question here after updated my FCP to 10.8 version: When I move the playhead using arrows keys (left/right) the audio is not skimming!!! If I move the playhead with my mouse/trackpad, audio skimming works fine. Audioskimming button is enabled and on. Is anybody knows what's going on or facing the same thing? It's very important to me to hear what's playing when I use arrows keys on my keyboard, that way I can edit sounds in a better way... Help!!!
I can confirm I'm not hearing audio skimming with the arrow keys here but I never used arrow keys to skim audio in the past so I don't know if that used to work that way.

I don't believe that's it's ever worked that way. I just tried it in FCP 10.7. It does not work. If you need that level of audio scrubbing, then hold down, the K and L key to scrub forward and the K and J keys to scrub backwards. This is the correct method for scrubbing audio without the skimmer.

Just tried here and what happens: If I hold K and press L once, the playhead moves forward one frame, but I cannot hear that frame, if I keep pressing L (just pressing once, not holding), playhead continues moving forward without playing the sound. But if I hold K, press L and hold, playhead keep moving forward automatically and I can hear the sound. But that's the problem... I need to hear the sound frame by frame, like It worked before this update =(
So they dropped support for DVDs. Does anyone do deliverables? any tricks or methods with that. (USB drives?) my business needs to shift if that is the case.

Steve and Mark, why normalize clips before going for the "look?" Why not just go for the look? If you normalize and then do your look, and then change your mind about anything, you still have 3 or fo4ur or 5 effects that are going to have to be adjusted individually.
The whole idea behind normalizing is to get all your clips into roughly the same dynamic range and color balance so that once you apply a look you can do so with an adjustment layer to all your clips at once and it will be applied uniformly - if you don't normalize you'll have a heck of a time matching your shots.

let's see all the improvements that Apple will make or has made to fcpx if you don't have a Mac m2 or higher it's useless... well too bad, we'll continue with premiere... I don't have to spend money on the latest Mac model, I have a 2020 iMac and it works fine with davinci and with premiere.
I took it back. The glitch part has nothing to do with you. It's obviously Apple engineers that are doing this, but DO NOT UPDATE ! A YEAR LONG DOCUMENTARY OF 10 HOURS EDITING JUST TURNED LONGER.
THE NEW 10.8 IS GLITCHY. You will get frames from other projects all of a sudden it sporadically throughout your timeline. It will seem like you have a body double that put in clips where they don't belong whatsoever!!!

I think color correcting in final cut is for babies… If you really wanna color correct you use da Vinci resolve. I do understand that Final Cut is for hobbyists and grandma… Where as da Vinci resolve is for pros.
If you still think that the tool is what makes you pro or not, you don't think that much.
I suspect you are not aware of the full suite of grading tools in FCP - trackable shape masks, HSL qualifications, etc. But yes Resolve is more powerful at the end of the day.

@@jobz9150 several big productions used Final Cut Pro 10 years ago already and it just became better since then. Also check out the work from Thomas Grove Carter to see the full potential of Final Cut.
