I had a 96 Chesterfield when I was 17. Think the manual said it was 33bhp. Bought it not even run in on 400 miles. Was restricted for the drive home….but came with a brand new rave valve in a plastic bag. Two Allen bolts and plugging it in and it if I remember right it went from 12bhp to 33bhp. Took the bike from 400 to 4000 miles and always warmed it up. Bike was still perfect at 4000 miles. Went through 2 throttle cables, one back tyre, and one rave valve cable. Sold it for what I paid a year later….still miss it. Would love a 250

@@stoneautomotive ya know I was just so amazed I actually had access to this amazing machine…..I was never “spoilt”, and appreciated and loved every single special item I had…..I remember my mum bought me a pair of Nike air max, and I didn’t dare wear them outside for a week. RS125 was a dream of mine, and all my friends…..but so out of reach it would always be a dream. Where I grew up it was a small village, and the local petrol station sold cars. Being a car fan I’d often check the stock, bug the owner if he had something special in, and was basically a pleasant pain in the arse to the garage owner…..being me and my mates were the local rogues, the garage owner knew his cars wouldn’t get messed with since he was always sound with us…..one day I’m walking thru the cars on an evening, and there’s a “rover metro” for sale for £2900…..next to the price there’s a sign saying you can own this car for £20 a week….I remember thinking that’s cheap…..I had a job walking dogs at the time earning over that. Think it might have been the next day, and I go past the garage, and there’s an RS125 chesterfield in the front window. P reg, when P was the new reg, the sign said £2900…..and I knew the new price was £4295…..and there was a waiting list.
So I goes in the garage all excited, just to have a look at it. I’m drooling over my dream bike…..guy who owns the garage comes over to chat….we smalltalk….as I drool all over the bike……all of a sudden I had a brainwave…..
I’m like, see that metro outside for £2900? It has a sign in the window saying you can own this car for £20 a week…..see how this bike is £2900? Can I own this bike for £20 a week? He looks at me and asks how old I am? 16 I said…..well if you can get your mam or dad to come and sign a bit of paper for you you can have it for £20 a week…..at this point my mind is doing back flips. I already had an AR50, so parents weren’t totally against the idea, me dad also had bikes in his younger days…..and could see himself riding it himself, so I literally managed to blag me dad into it, and we went straight back to the garage and signed all the paperwork. Can’t remember how many days before I could drive it home, but I was only 16 still, and had 3 months til my 17th birthday before I could ride it. The garage had loads of offers for more than they agreed with me, but luckily I’d got the deal sorted before the new auto trader came out and the guy selling it knew I’d be heart broken if he screwed me over but apparently he had offers of new price £4300 when he’d already agreed £2900 with me. He literally had no idea what he had. The girl, yes a girl, who owned it before me decided she wanted a car instead and traded it against a “Metro”…..and the garage having no idea just put a price on it they thought was right.
I still to this day feel blessed I owned that bike. It’s just mad how it all fell into place.

Loved your note on the reliability. I owned a fully improved 1998 RS50 with a 70 kit, arrow system , open air filter and a 21 carborator . no lights, electricity or a fuel pump (fuel ran directly from the oil tank in the racing version) . we where 17 and burned engines going 12000 rpm and pushing the bike to 70 mph. bought another RS just for the parts..

People look down their noses at 50s, but Honda had a racing 50cc bike that could do over 100mph. Incredible performance for such a small capacity. Very high state of tune. My Dt50mx would do 47mph, not bad for a 50. The Derbi Senda could do 50mph and was considered quickest in my day. But go further back to the 60s and 70s and there was a range of different models that were much faster than today's 50s.

Man this vid is a flashback! I I bought a brand new Matte Silver RS125 in 1997 when i was 19. The day i had the restritor removed was crazy, they are so bad when restricted, no high end RPM at all. When my work friends at the time saw it they both went and got one but in the Gloss black. Being impatient (like you mentioned) they both blew up the engine, mine never faltered and lasted until i sold it.
Having the restrictor in from new for 3-4 months probably perfectly ran in the engine. I managed to go off the clock on top speed, approx 114mph i think it was, friend was on a 400 nearby who confirmed.
I''d spend hours polishing that lovely chrome frame.

My first bike was a tuned TZR125, and it was fecking fast!! Back when I started riding in 1996 as an 18 year old, I went to a bike shop in Hinckley and out of all the bikes there, there was this 9 year old TZR with almost 40k on the clock. I was stupid back then nd didn't know what the hell I was buying, all I knew was that it looks fucking cool, and had a tuned , powervalved engine, and that it pissed on my mates, who rode AR125s, NSR125s and RD125s , mine was king! and would do just over 100mph (clocked by mats on bigger bikes) We used to take the bikes up to the old Runways at where Magna Park is now, and do drag races.

At 16 I had an RS50. I liked the looks of the 125 and a Mito, but at 17, I initially opted for an NSR (which I quickly wrote off) because numerous boys the year older than me raved about the reliability of the Honda.
After paying back the loan for the written off NSR, I got a Mito when I turned 18 and I loved it despite its electrical woes.
In my early 20s I got an RS250 which I didn't take to. Also had a CBR400 and was used to the easier nature of 4-stroke. Plus the quick steering of the 250 was unbelievable! It really should've been on a racetrack. I just didn't have the time to adapt to the 250.
Sadly the RS125 is still a bike that's eluded me, I haven't even had a quick shot of one. I am tempted to get one, but also tempted to get another Mito.
Seems the Mito and RS are similar in the power coming in higher up the revs and with a smoother feel than the NSR. On an NSR the powerband kicked in hard at 5,000rpm.

So you actually showed my second bike i ever owned, a beautiful cagivia 125cc evo , loved that bike , and it shared some of its part's with the 916,, mirrors, gauges ect,, how cool was that and it was a mini 916!, got mine on finance as £4,000 back in the day was a bit rich for me, got it deresricted and that was expensive, expansion chamber off,and literally had to unweld it,take out the restriction in the chamber and re weld it up,oh and change the chain and sprockets, ran different ratios..loved that bike, seized it up at a indicated 110mph(yes i know optimistic reading). Locked the engine up solid, and had to push it a few mile home, not a good look,,and humm embarrassing explaining to the parents er,,, yeah😂.. had a kawasaki h100ex in jet black with shiney aluminium wheels i would seize up( cast block, cheaper to repair luckily for me than the expensive mito with its flashy treated barrel and parts, i was very lucky my late dad was a mechanic so i got to luckily for me,, unluckily for him rebuild the engine at home, yeah mother loved that in the house, (not😂)., still at least he left the engine hoist he made on the drive he dug by hand over the road.😂..still miss my two strokes ragging them chasing the power band, don't enjoy trying to get the engine mix or the self altering tickover, set it at 1,500 rpm, go a mile down the road and its at 2000 rpm..but yeah bikes have there qwerks as do we as people, thats why I love bikes,, they have personality, character. They talk to you..talk to your emotions.

A friend had the Gilera SP-01. Steel frame, very light and incredibly fast. That really felt like a race bike and was very fun to ride, although it was very picky about oil and proper maintenance; likely neglect was what earned it a reputation of being unreliable. My friend did it by the book - I still feel it was terrible choice for him to trade it in for a shitty Ford Escort after few years. Now 30+ years later, it would have been so great if he just would have mothballed it with service parts while it was in 100% condition - but what do we know when we are young.
