@themamagoatshow it's a compilation of commercials prepared for the automotive theme park, Autorama, that was built in Flint, MI. Sadly -- like most of Flint, it's now closed.
The Volkswagen commercial at the end mostly showed American cars which were long gone by that time (about 1971): Hudson, Packard, Studebaker - but the car with the holes in the side was a Buick, which was still very much in business then. Not every version of this ad kept that part; some had it cut out. The reason the commercial was set in 1949 was because that was the first year that Volkswagen Beetles (2 of them) were imported into the USA. By the time this commercial was made, there were huge numbers of Beetles on the road in the US.
Cars brands used to be different looking not built on a "Platform" like today's cars. Every fall the auto makers would introduce their next years car lines and it was exciting to anticipate the car brands changes. Of course judged by back then we are all driving "Advanced Project Cars" 1
I don't hate US cars and wouldn't point to the early Beetles as the benchmark for comfort and innovation but I think it's fair to say that US car makers squandered an historical moment that left them without any serious competition immediately after WWII. Instead of emphasizing innovation and quality they concentrated on style (there were exceptions) and were not prepared to compete when Japanese and German automakers offered quality, reliability and durability as well as fuel efficiency.
This man is wearing a NEW ensemble from KMart of Troy, Michigan...His car is the Chevrolet Corsica of Linden,New Jersey. (Oh wait, that just ME..) LOL.
The '60 Plymouth was a relative bargain. Where else could one get DAMN near '59 Cadillac fins at that price. Of course Cadillac HAD to mess that up by LOWERING the fins for.....'60.
I has conceived in a 1958 Chevrolet. (true!), One COULD say (as the second kid..) That I was "too new to be true"... 😜. Of course the 1959 Chevy was.....All new, all over again! (Damn, I was obsolete right out of the box...) 🤷♂️
Thats well done, the cars of the 50's had no safety or handling qualities at all, not until the hq holden in Australia where seat belts and neck rests were standard on a non luxury vehicle.
I couldn't respond to the gentleman directly so I'll do it this way. He asked what car that was at the 1:21 mark -- it was a '58 Ford Fairlane. Hope this helps.
@fjgh666 It's a 1959 Dodge D-500 Custom Royal Lancer. How's that for a mouthful,name-wise?! This truly was a time when cars had STYLE,love it or hate it,you didn't mistake one car make for another or wonder what year it was. Not as reliable, durable, safe or comfortable as modern cars,...but they did have that style!
I'll never understand how carmakers went from these unique curvy visionary designs to the shitty boxy designs in the 80s. They smartened up and went in some good directions with some sports cars in the late 90s and early 2000s, and with the exception of a few nice cars now, some are starting to go in the wrong direction again. I personally prefer the clean, tasteful, smooth designs of (some) 90s sports cars, most of which now look bulky and awkward, with a few too many sculpted surfaces and chrome. Toyota did get it right on the FRS/BRZ though, which kind of goes back to that slimmer, cleaner 90s sports car design language.
Yes they did. They became simply a variant of the VW Golf with a different body on it. 1998 on the New Beetle was an over-engineered "chick car" and a piece of junk. VW doesn't even make the new Beetle anymore.
What the hell is a magic circle steering wheel? and a country and city horn? who cares? but I do love how the headlights worked on that car at 03:01... and no, holes in the side is not a common idea for cars... though still a design option
As I said earlier, you can get cars with holes in the side simply by trying to drive through certain areas of some big cities. Bullet holes to be exact.
My mother had a 1954 Chevrolet station wagon (a year after the '53 that Dinah Shore raves about at the start) and later, my father had a 1960 Plymouth. My mother kept the Chevy for over 50 years. However, we only had the Plymouth for one year. My mother hated it because the fins were so large that she kept seeing them in her peripheral vision and thinking it was another car that was way to close to our car.
Now this is just my opinion! but I think that after the 1950's the cars lost all the flare and style.. they chopped the fins and got rid of alot of the chrome.
Except the safety. I was in an accident in a 2011 Hyundai and if it hadn't been for the air bags, safety cage construction and the seat belts I'd not be here right now. I was tee-boned when I was going through an intersection on a green light. The cross traffic had a red light but a driver ignored that signal and banged into me. My car absorbed most of the impact. I did suffer some injuries but I survived at least. (By the way somewhere on RUclips is a crash test between a 2016 Chevy and a 1959 Chevy. You should watch it. The crash test dummy in the 1959 vehicle was totally messed up after the crash But the test dummy in the newer vehicle was not. )
I'm only 54,and really love this old stuff!just can't get my fill,Thanks for sharing and bringing them back to life.
Chuck Nesbett Thanks for watching. We have more to come. But takes time digitize and upload. Working on it.
gotta love those "eye brows" on the white car im inspired to design something sleek
I always liked the look of the '60 Plymouths!
The traffic light at 2:00 is so damn cool!
I remember the Volkswagen commercial at the 1949 auto show. I loved it and still do. Volkswagen advertising was by far the best.
@themamagoatshow it's a compilation of commercials prepared for the automotive theme park, Autorama, that was built in Flint, MI. Sadly -- like most of Flint, it's now closed.
Beautiful, When cars had style..

Damn, Dinah Shore was hot.

The 1960 Plymouth looked great!
This man is wearing a NEW ensemble from KMart of Troy, Michigan...His car is the Chevrolet Corsica of Linden,New Jersey. (Oh wait, that just ME..) LOL.
Well done with editing and humor. 😂

The '60 Plymouth was a relative bargain. Where else could one get DAMN near '59 Cadillac fins at that price. Of course Cadillac HAD to mess that up by LOWERING the fins for.....'60.
I know a guy who had a hide away hardtop. He got it by going under a very low bridge. :-)
Great video
I've never heard the term mannequin applied to a real person before seeing this commercial. 1:15.
If only the car makers could have imagined what the REAL future held for them
@jfrockon thanks.
1st to comment. Wow. Ads for cars you don't see anymore. I've never seen Studebaker clips before.
great video, thanks ;)
I would of liked to have seen each commercial whole and maybe chronologically, rather than all the spots jumbled together.
+moses knows I can understand that. This was cut together in order to be entertaining. We have some individual commercials posted too.
Those were the days!!!!!!!
...i'll take one of each of them! when can i come and pick them up! :P
the last one is the best GO VDUB :D
indeed. . . think everyone commenting here missed the end 'editorial' of this vid.
nice job
I like classic
I'll take the 59 Dodge please.
I has conceived in a 1958 Chevrolet. (true!), One COULD say (as the second kid..) That I was "too new to be true"... 😜. Of course the 1959 Chevy was.....All new, all over again! (Damn, I was obsolete right out of the box...) 🤷♂️
Yeah! like turning your boring station wagon into a firebreather.
When cars were cool covered with chrome and you could tell the makes apart.
this is great, a epic montage of the greatest years for automobiles. Stupid crumbling, cheap fiber glass!!
damn i didnt know they had honeycomb grill in cars back then
They never promote commercials with jingles
It's actually Autoworld.
was that tape called dream cars by any chance?? cuz alot of the commercials from this vid are also on that tape
i wonder if anything could be called a hooptie back then
i dont remember the last time there was a person in the car commercial standing next to a car and talking about it
Also watch,
Best Looking BMW Ever! 328 Cabrio 1936

Thats well done, the cars of the 50's had no safety or handling qualities at all, not until the hq holden in Australia where seat belts and neck rests were standard on a non luxury vehicle.

Thank you.
2:02 Playing steering wheel !
Did any cars come with "Magic Parallelogram Steering"?
I THINK that was a MoPar (Chrysler) term.
@fjgh666 It's a 1959 Dodge D-500 Custom Royal Lancer. How's that for a mouthful,name-wise?!
This truly was a time when cars had STYLE,love it or hate it,you didn't mistake one car make for another or wonder what year it was. Not as reliable, durable, safe or comfortable as modern cars,...but they did have that style!
at 3:07, is that Ricardo Montalban?
Natch. it was for the 1975 Chrysler Cordoba.
what was the car called that had "wide sweeping eyebrows?"
1959 Dodge
the 1959 DODGE
...@ 1:21 what car is that?...
1966 Buick

maybe it was the hormones back then
what the heck was "magic circle sterring"?
Appears to simply be power steering
CITY HORN COUNTRY HORN EPIC
Dianah Shore sells the '53 Chevrolets!
My folks had a 53 Chevrolet 2 door sedan model 210. I learned to drive in it.
Next year, every car in America will have holes in it's side.
They do if you happen to live in South Chicago or other ghetto areas.
VW bug never changed
Yes they did. They became simply a variant of the VW Golf with a different body on it. 1998 on the New Beetle was an over-engineered "chick car" and a piece of junk. VW doesn't even make the new Beetle anymore.
0:50 Plymouth Belvedere
A "city horn" and a "country horn"? What in the hell does that even mean?
What the hell is a magic circle steering wheel? and a country and city horn? who cares? but I do love how the headlights worked on that car at 03:01... and no, holes in the side is not a common idea for cars... though still a design option

I was born in the wrong year.
Dinah Shore selling cars! LOL
She literally had "The Dinah Shore CHEVROLET SHOW'. What was gonna sell? Fords?
My mother had a 1954 Chevrolet station wagon (a year after the '53 that Dinah Shore raves about at the start) and later, my father had a 1960 Plymouth. My mother kept the Chevy for over 50 years. Why not place the cars in chronological order? Then we could see the progression of style. This hodge-pod editing makes it dizzying to watch.
+label1877 It was an artistic choice. Works for some and not for others. But thanks for your input. We'll put that on the to do list.
hola te felicito en tu video espero visites los mios y dejes tu comentario vale

Except the safety. I was in an accident in a 2011 Hyundai and if it hadn't been for the air bags, safety cage construction and the seat belts I'd not be here right now.
