- When John F. Kennedy was in the White House in 1962 and 1963, these were the cars that were on the road. And those vehicles are put through their paces in these two Chevrolet promotional films.

I just ordered a '63 Chevy Impala with a 327 with a 4 speed from my local Chevy dealer.
if only we could...
And it was under $4000

I splurged, went with the 425 horse 409 with aluminum intake and solid lifters.

My Dad drove all these old cars and Ford was his choice for Reliability.

*When I was a kid...we had TWO cars that I thought were 'the coolest ever'...a '64 'Country Squire' wagon...and my mother had a '64 Impala 'SS' w/a 'FOUR-O-NINE' in it! Burgundy w/white 'tuck & roll' inside and an automatic 'T' handle on the floor...I still think that was a 'sweet looking car'...and the Ford wagon was white with red vinyl inside w/an electric window you could control from the dash...that one was a '390' and I liked them both!* ( *We had a '58 Olds 'Holiday Sedan'...and that car was a 'beauty' to drive cross-country from Dearborn to Las Vegas in...we had a cat named 'Tabber J' and one time he jumped from the front to the back and peed on me while I was sleeping on the back-seat...he just couldn't 'hold-it' for the next stop!* ) *The one thing I miss most from 'then' is VENT-WINDOWS and the 'pull for outside-air' control on the dash...no motor, just air rushing into the intakes and coming thru all the vents and the heater outlet as you drove...and I miss the comfortable seats from that era too...why can't they make 'comfy- seats' any more?* *New cars are far better than the '60's ever were...but why are seats so damn uncomfortable?*
409 was the ultimate sleeper car, because it looked like something your granny drove to and from church. But put your granny in a race with a Mustang, it she'll smoke that young "whipper snapper"!
While in High School (1968) I had a '62 Impala SS 409 4spd with dual 4bl carbs and factory HP heads. It' passed everything on the road
except the gas stations! I could actually watch my gas needle slowly go down as i drove it, (but High Tech Ethyl gas back then was only .43c gallon).
It came factory without PS or PB and had a very stiff clutch. But it was sure fun to cruise around town in. ;-)
Everybody had promo films. They were commercials so yes, biased. Everybody knows that. You were selling a product so you highlighted the bonuses and downplayed the negatives. It's no different today with everything from cellphones to cars. Thanks for the video!
And they even tried to turn their negatives into bonuses and the other guys bonuses into negatives.

And we always were able to predict who won on their races.
My dad bought his new 63 Impala SS on a year-end close-out on Nov 22nd 1963, the day JFK was assassinated. I was 2 years old and don't remember it but it was a story that was passed down to me. I guess everyone was shocked and crying on the drive home with the new Impala. 14 years later the old man gave me the Impala, what a bad ass ride! I said 'gave it to me', what I meant was 'I had to work my ass off (at his liquidation business) to earn it'. Neither of my older sisters wanted it, dumb broads.
Wow as being born on day President Kennedy won the election I can remember the story so thanks November 7th 1960 hey your sisters were raised to respect their man as that was their only Job correct
The 283 was the best motors they was then the 327 & 350 I love Chevrolets anyway there the best builds automobiles ever made in the USA

I have always loved the look over cab-over design. That Corvair 95 truck was really cool. Ultimate project venhcle!
Back in those days I always had Chevys. I got a Galaxie loaner once with a 390, stick shift. It was a dog but I thought it must have been worn out or something. After seeing this I can see why the Galaxie felt like a dog compared to the Chevies I was used to driving. The 61 thru 64 model years were a Chevy Golden Age.
Dad drove a 63 327 Impala 4Door Sport Sedan, fantastic Car, such a smooth ride and good performance.
I already knew this from my experience with some of the car's back in the seventies!
29:15 - I'm sure what's seen in this promo is exaggerated, but those Corvairs COULD actually take a lot of punishment for an air-cooled, rear-engined compact! My father had a Monza version back in the day, and it went through a lot of hell, and didn't take much to keep it maintained... "Screw you, Ralph Nader!"

Next car I buy is gonna be 1962 - 65 Chevy Nova (restored) 194 6cyl 3 spd manual trans. No EGR valve / O2 sensor /catylitic converter /ECM / electronic add on crap.
The car will have much better value after 10 yrs use than ANYTHING sold new today - guaranteed!

If the Corvair van was so good, why wasn't it around for 1965, yet the Econoline stuck around until 2011??
1964 through 1966 G10s were essentially Corvair vans with Chevy pickup drive-lines. Same doors, dash, brakes etc.

The corvair was marketed until april 1969.
Displaying the differential gearing would make the demonstration even more dramatic.
The Corvair vans were great off road. Used to drive them in the woods and camp in them.

first car 62 impala ,283 pg paid $100 for it 2nd car a 62 biscayne 409 3 speed ,paid $250 it was called bisquick wish i still had it ,both never gave me any issues and drove them like a race car everywhere dependability hell yea

I was chuckling when the 327 Impala was squaring off against the Ford and Mopar; neither of the latter two had their engines described. Note it took the 300 HP 327 to do the deed, to boot.
Said Mopar 318" and Ford 352"...

An Incredible amount of sales and testing effort went into these commercials... All of the earlier vehicles were so much easier to work on and keep running properly, than the modern vehicles... It is too bad that the IDIOT Ralph (the mouth) Nader LIED about the supposed 'handling problems' of the Chevy Corvairs. What was unsafe at any speed, was the movement of his pen and his mouth...

I grew up on Chevys, but I noticed they never test a Fairlane V8, LOL.
My first car was a 65 chevy impala SS
It wasn’t to fast because it only had a 283 under the hood with a power glide transmission but it sure was nice looking and it only cost me 300 dollars in 1972
There is no ride like the '63 Impala.
*I think that 'engine-turned' rub-strip on the '64 was the 'ultimate in style' and the 'Impala' logo-in a-circle was really 'something...and something about the styling and the 'look' of Chevys & Fords from that era reallygets me, probably because I was growing-up and actually had an attention-span longer than 5-minutes!*( *I don't want those times back...but that era WAS 'coolest ever' for a kid, at least to me it was* )

I think our future is to use the technics & chassis architecture + some modern components in Fuel injection, but all over more the cheaper "Low Tec" like used in the US 60s/70s cars + the V8 engine! I think this is the right way for future, because those cars are a lot more economic, could be self repaired, and in manufacturing it use more manpower. less full automaitic manufacturing. because only with a way with a mix of both earas are really good for future! And i think straight 6 + V8 engines are the best motors in all situations! mixed with some motor management, and fuel injection you got the best engines/Motors for cars! They could be used and hold alife for so long time, that this is the right way about really environment protection! Because a tiny 4 cyl engine with a lot of supercharged boost istn´t a good way for a lifetime of a motor! And eclectric cars, just forgett that old, so heaviely environment destruction technic.. No, Eclectric cars aren´t future! That ist a very bad joke to call E-Cars "future" ore somesting else like that ;) (It´s only a governmental arenda what will take us the only good way about cars. that´s no joke. that´s only a bad agenda! the loosers under that agenda are we, the cars, the tchnic, engineering and almost the environment... E-Cars are so bad for all.

The designs were so good for Cameros, Mustangs, T-Birds, and Challengers that they had to be essentially brought back for a new generation that happily bought them.

What this tells me is that it was MUCH easier to cheat in various ways back then........My sister drove a 1959 Falcon for her first car and it started in bitter cold when any other car in the neighborhood would not! And this was the late 70s....no rust either.

In 1962, The standard V-8 for the full sized Chevrolet was the 283 170 to 195 HP engine, not the 250 HP 327. Plymouth had the 318 230 HP and Ford the 289 170 to 195 HP. I would imagine a 327 would out accelerate the other engines. It also appeared some cars had automatic transmission and the Chevy II had manual. Always a plus compared to the 2 speed Powerglide. All of these comparisons are rigged to a certain degree. Those cars were not made to haul 1100 lbs of cement. In my opinion, all of those cars had pluses and minuses depending on what the buyer wants. My dad had a 1962 Fury with a 383 4 barrel which would have shut down the Chevy with the 327. They are comparing apples to oranges here but this was entertaining..
I thing you are incorrect on the ford 289. I believe you are referring to the 260. I don't think the 289 came out until around 1965.
With almost 60 more cubes, that Fury had BETTER beat the 327

@@eugeneschulte4950 I just checked it out. You are correct. The first one I remember was 1965. I had a 65 Comet Cyclone that was a 289. I also remember the 260 prior to that. Even though I'm old enough to remember cars from the 50's and 60's, I don't remember 289's prior to late 64 or 65. You have my apology sir. I'll stick to Mopar's. I had many more of those.

Yea everyone since the beginning of time worried about that. Because the price of food is what you pay at the market, or the labor you put into it at home.

I had a 63 Biscayne 2 door sedan with 3 on the tree that had a 6 but I pulled it and dropped a 275HP 327 in out of a 67 . Used to shut down 440 Chryslers with it....hahaha .
A properly set up L79 Nova could smoke a Chrysler hemi.
If you try to drift a corvair, you will end up going backwards, a fun amount of oversteer

The problem with Fords, even then, is there was very little variety among their product line. Everything was "cookie cutter", just a bigger version of the same car. Whereas Chevrolets had style and variety in their lineup--every car looked different and there was something for every taste. Not true today--where every SUV looks the same and the only choices you get are mini, little, medium, large, or extra large of the same SUV
The Plymouth valiants were some of the ugliest cars back then, I remembered them from way back then, most the of the ones I saw were usually police cars,
They restyled them in '68, but yeah, that fake tire on the trunk rounded out a really ugly car in the early 60's!
