- I made the decision recently to become a global brand ambassador for Guideline. The company has a great team of passionate designers, with one being a world champion fly caster, so the rod reel and line design is second to none. The clothing range is stylish, robust and highly functional, and the company adheres to an Eco-friendly stance and use recycled materials throughout the range they produce.
We take a quick look here at a couple of the rods and reels in the lineup, as myself (Mike Kirkpatrick) Hans Kreuer and 11 times national fly fishing champion, Cory Scott put them through their paces on a late season back country stream.
All three of us are Guideline Brand Ambassadors and all gear worn here is GL.

Im preaching to the converted then! Yeah they are sensational rods. Have you tried the LPX Tactical series? The 905 is amazing!! Cheers from NZ!
Again.... what a beautiful country we live in and you guys are totally awesome 💖 Great gear, great company, great fishing, great movie. Thanks for sharing, you are wonderful ❤️
And you too are most wonderful!
Wonderful video guys! Just can't wait till those back country streams open again. Regards, Paul

Really cool video Mike. Great angling, stunning scenery, top quality trout. Guideline looks mint gear. Thanks heaps for sharing.
Thanks for that! It's the best gear I've used to be fair... Love it
Been out with Hans 4 years ago and took my LPX and it did the business. Regards to Nan
Your regards has been greatfully received! Hans is the man
yet another awesome video. This keeps me going between fishing opportunities.
Cheers and glad to be of service!
Another fine video.
Thanks David!
Great value rods. Has quality like most well known brands, but better price. Will bring my LPX Tactical to NZ in a few months. I can also see the ULS (hybrid) system would work well on some medium sized rivers, with a mix of short and longer (spey) casting. When distance is not the most important, the ULS system is very practical. I would especially bring it for big rainbows on the North Island. Next time, maybe...
Absolutely. Youll have fun in the central NI with GL gear
Another awesome video team. Good stuff keep em coming
Cheers buddy
Another cracker Mike, you manage to showcase the best of NZ, its people and some top-quality fishing with top quality gear.
Thanks so much! Yep, great fishing with great gear is hard to beat...
awesome video.. great fishing
Thanks Amelia!
Great film once again and capturing all the finer details of the Guideline gear. I believe it's reasonably priced when compared with your predecessor in Scott, but still equally as good quality wise in your mind? I love the fario reel. GL will become more and more popular, no doubt throughout New Zealand. And your posts and video clips of this will help with that. Nice job by yourself, as always, Hanz and Corey, showcasing what this gear has to offer.
Cheers matey! The Guideline rods aren't just as good, for me, theyre even better. Listen, all top rod manufacturers make quality gear, otherwise they wouldnt be successful. Its just the rods from Guideline fit me perfectly. They strike a blend of casting, not only long but short very well, mend well and have feel and protect lighter tippets. They are true 'fishing' rods. They are sort of the lovechild of a Scott Radian and Winston Air, giving you the best of both worlds. Add to that theyre between 20 and 30 percent cheaper... no contest. You gotta try one buddy. Plus theyre nicer to look at, just beautifully made. My opinion anyway.
@mikefsher I will certainly try one. The key ingredients for me that turns my head are the nice balance of casting short and long range, add to that, it protects the light tippets which is really important.
But Mike, what about your Scott!!??? Haha good stuff thank you sir!
Yeah theyre nice rods, but GL rods are as nice to cast at a lower price point. Try one buddy!
Hi Mike, awesome film !
About guideline, I’m looking for a rod leaning more on the scott G series action than on the fast action. Maybe the « tactical » series of rod ?
At the opposite of the spectrum, the coastal 9’3 6wt seems nice for more heavy work.
Hi mate thanks for that! The entire Guideline rod range is nothing short of sensational. Either the NT 11 or Tactical but I'd suggest the Tactical if you want more a G Series feel. These are some of lightest and pure actioned rods I've used. I have the Coastal 908 and it's superb. The 9'3 6wt would be great. As a surprise package, the GL Predator series is an eye opener. Designed for more bass and pike, it's the lightest fast actioned ros I've used. Period.
Thanks for your advice. I Hope one day we could share some time hunting big fish in NZ…
Awesome video Mike - do you have any companies you buy flys from that you trust? Or do you tie them all? I’ve been bending out too many hooked
Tie most myself. I use Kamasan or Tiemco.
Lovely video and fishing on a high country stream. GL gear looks like a winner. Are you intending to make films still with the audio of nature, sounds of the river and the banter between you guys on the river by fishing in general?
Hi, yeah its just a mix of styles designed to fit the particular type of clip. I think they all have their place and some will suit one style and others a different one. In short, yep ill likely be making more content with the anglers miced up or shotgun mic capturing all the sounds
@mikefsher I like this style too. I enjoy listening to you guys on the river. I just love feeling the experience of the river chats and nature as I eluded to even from my lounge. Bring on the next one 💪
Who is the New Zealand distributor for #guideline? Not manic is it?! Looks like mint gear
Flytackle NZ - it states it during the clip intro. Sporting Life in Turangi stock GL gear as do Fishermans Loft in Christchurch. It is indeed mint gear
I rarely fish 1 handers but it's hard to find better rods for the price than Guideline rods.
Indeed sir, indeed!
Does this mean you have parted ways the Scott Fly Rods?
Yes I certainty have - global brand ambassador now and couldn't be happier with the GL gear
