  • With the world in the fierce grip of a global pandemic, there are few places in the world where anglers have the freedom to roam and fish with unrestricted access and companionship. New Zealand is one of the few... Although we miss our international friends and our guiding industry is on it's knees, there is a shining light at the end of a long and gloomy tunnel here - FREEDOM TO FISH!
    Join myself (Mike Kirkpatrick) and good mate Hans Kreuer, as we embark on a three day trip in search of some large brown trout, with the unsettled spring weather looking to finally relent into some fine days.

    As always Mike the wait is worth it and just over an hour long an excellent watch. That part of the country is just fantastic. I think our hunting/fishing guides are doing it pretty tough, income wise, at the moment so hang in there and thanks for the videos.

    Mike...this is one of those channels that I can not afford to lose. Working 12 hr shifts at a hospital around seemingly endless numbers of COVID patients and being in school full time again does not allow me too much freedom to fish. Your videos take me to these places that I can only dream about right now. Until our world changes for the better, I will have to live vicariously through you and your fantastic journeys. In the meantime, keep healthy, keep safe, and keep up the beautiful work in these videos.

      Anthony Gregorio Hi Anthony, thanks for your humbling comments and I'll be trying to increase the content if I can. These clips can take anything from 20 - 60 hours of work (not to mention the time filming on the water) and the investment of gear. So in short it's a labour of love that is cool to share with like minded folks like yourself. I hope you, along with everyone else, can get back to normality sooner rather than later. Cheers buddy

  • @HighcountryFlylife

    Another @mikefsher classic as always, the surroundings the pure serenity of it all. Stubborn as a few of us that continue to stick with long 20 foot leaders refusing to cut them down because of the wind, Its a battle within a battle we like to overcome so I get it, all them fish were in prime condition and to then feel a tad hungry towards the end to see you cook up another fine meal involving a nice piece of steak in the evening. Do continue on making these films, its always a pleasure to watch them and every time I see the notification pop up that just builds to the excitement of knowing I'm in for a treat for the night.. top filming Mike!

    • @mikefsher
      @mikefsher  3 года назад +1

      Highcountry Flylife I'm humbled buddy to know what I produce resonates so deeply with good folks like yourself. I think what I do doesn't suit RUclips algorithms much as some of my last clips haven't even reached views near the amount of subscribers, not that it's about that but it doesn't make it easier for sure.

    • @HighcountryFlylife
      @HighcountryFlylife 3 года назад +2

      @@mikefsher No worries. I've been watching your videos for along time, even well before I created my own channel to then comment on your content. On the subject of algorithms, I've never really understood how that all works, but what I had realised, that the title you use for a video uploaded to RUclips plays a big part to a film being picked up on the search engine. I noticed personally myself when the words "Fly Fishing" for an example became part of the title, views went up considerably for me anyway, but it's a funny one. I echo your thoughts on what your saying about the number of subscribers and views, some of your best films you might have less views than what you may consider better than the latter for instance, that's where it becomes tricky to understand. All your films are top notch including this one, I've always thought & continued to put these ones in the top 4, *It's All Part Of The Story *Campfire Reflections *The Agony & The Ecstasy *Rising Expectations which I thought was a classic with the Canadian guy Brier Kelly.. Who can forget his terrible rubber soles for footwear! great vid though, but yeah I'm glad to see many others follow my sentiments as them videos really sky rocketed for views. I'd personally pay to view your content eg Insight The Trophy Quest, so whatever it is that will help you to continue making these videos I'll jump on board anycase!

    Well done Mike! Amazing video. Beautiful fish, beautiful river and some fine-looking camp side meals. I appreciate that you take good care of them too. Can you answer a question for me? I'm used to keeping a lot more distance between me and the fish. Are you trying to fish close enough to see the fish take the nymph in case it's too subtle to see it on the dry? Different reason?

    • @mikefsher
      @mikefsher  4 месяца назад

      Thanks so much and good question. As long as you understand the trouts viewing window, you can get closer than most anglers think. The advantages are many: better drift is the biggest, then seeing the take, followed by being more accurate, then more secure short range sets. Hope this helps!

    A lovely film Mike. I recognize them rivers, without givin anything away here to the public, that last small river you went too towards end of video starts with "N" & you were camping at "B". Nice spot, hard to get in, often when I tried fishin there it's full of anglers right through that road. Gets well hammered them 3 stretches of river. May I ask do you build your leaders from scratch or do you buy tapered leaders & just extend to your length, you cut through that wind no trouble

    Amazing work on the river for some memorable fish. Quick question: I'm wondering about the water I've seen in NZ. The rivers seem to be quite large for a smaller country. I live in Colorado at the foot of the Rocky Mountains and we only have a couple comparable rivers (The Colorado, the Platte and maybe The Arkansas). Are these rivers smaller than they appear on camera? If not, how do they get so large so quickly? I hope this question makes some sense. Thanks and great film.

    Nicely filmed with great scenery as a backdrop. Incredible fish to top it off. Thanks for posting. On your last fish you mentioned using 5X tippet. Can you be specific of the make and type of tippet? I can't believe you were able to land that monster on 5X... speaks well of your skills.

    • @schmoonkie
      @schmoonkie 3 года назад

      @@mikefsher Thanks Mike! I've added that tippet to my shopping list. I expect that your rod must have a relatively soft tip section to absorb the shock of a sudden bolt by the fish and to prevent the tippet from breaking. If it's not too much to ask, can you tell me the make, model, and weight the your rod you used for those large fish?
      I fish ( mostly nymph ) the Madison River in Montana every year. Normally I use 5 weight rods except when it's really windy, then I go to a fast action 6 weight.

    Excellent video but gotta ask why don’t you use barbless hooks?

    • @mikefsher
      @mikefsher  3 года назад +1

      Cheers mate! I do use barbless on some occasions, but the reasons I often don’t are we tie off the bend of the hook (either dry or nymph) on tandem rigs) and my experience is that too often the knot slips off resulting in lost fish. The barb acts as a stopper. Also these fish run towards you often and are masters at throwing the hook on some barbless.
