As a Dutchman born and raised i always tear up when i hear this speech.
If you want some more dutch pride you should check out 'Merck hoe sterk' with english translations
This is a clip from the movie Michiel de Ruyter.
Definitely a movie to watch if your in ancient navy tactics.
It's a great movie, but I really doubt this speech was anything near what they would have said back then.
I think it's published as 'Admiral' in foreign countries
Republicans in the Netherlands was more in the literal sense of the word: Republicans vs Monarchists.
Basically 'our' republicans didn't want a king, nothing to do with the US kind of republicans.
Orangists were no Monarchists, not even close. They wanted the position of stadtholders filled by princes of Orange to keep Holland in check. They were very much Republicans also.
@@valentijnrozeveld3773 The Stadtholders acted pretty much as constitutional monarchs tho
@@Raadpensionaris I was talking about political parties though.
Watch that whole movie with Highly and Texas!!
Michiel de Ruyter
The literal translation would be the "States minded"(republicans) and "prince minded" (orangists), they were all republicans, no one wanted a monarchy. This was during the first Stadtholderless era when the man speeching was kind of Prime Minister and the country was run by him through the States. The States were parliaments of commoners for each province, wealthy merchants usually. This Johan de Witt guy was also an example of upward social mobility, his grandpa was a woodstacker.
The prince is Willem III van Oranje, grandson of Willem van Oranje or Willem the Silent, the one led the revolt against the Spanish Empire and declared independence in 1581. The "Staatsgezinden" wanted the Dutch Republic to be a loose federation, which would result in Holland being by far the most powerful and running the show, while Holland could rely on the navy and flooding of the Hollandic waterline for defence.
The "Prinsgezinden" wanted a Stadtholder like Willem van Oranje and Maurits van Oranje Nassau had been. They were unifying forces and especially Maurits had been a brilliant military commander. Maurits had a great partnership with De Witt's predecessor Van Oldenbarneveldt (also a commoner), which didn't last and ended badly but they secured the survival of the Dutch Reppublic together. So the reintroduction of the Stadtholder would give the other provinces more of a voice and the East, South and North of the republic would be better defended.
Allthough Stadtholder was an office one was appointed in, by the States, it was semi-heriditary in the sense that usually an Orange was picked. Just like there was still nobility in the executive branche and many people were still believing in courage and leadership running through bloodline. But it wasn't nobilty vs commoners, the conflict was about centralization vs loose conferderay with power for Holland. That conflict would explode in 1672 after which Willem III van Oranje became Stadtholder without a PM like Maurtis had.
Stadtholder is a bit of weird position because it started out as steward to the king for (one of) the Netherlands. But when the Stadtholder led the revolt and ditched the king, it became a whole different positon. Instead of this noble being appointed by the Spanish King, who would always appoint nobles in high positions, he got appointed by the commoners of the States.
a clip from the movie "The Admiral (2015)l" about the life of Michiel de Ruyter.
Very interesting to watch. I knew the speech but to hear it like that makes it so real, so very much alive.
Thank you Simple! I'm curious to see the follow-up.
And yes Johan de Wit died for his country. But not by the hands of a foreign enemy. He died by the hands of his own people. Something we need to be ashamed of
After a fierce campaign against them by the supporters of Orange, and the Prince himself.
@@dutchman7623 Yes. The family of Orange should be ashamed of it, just as we should.
@@mariadebake5483 But with some pepper, nutmeg and a little salt, they were tasty.
😋
@@dutchman7623 Brrrrrr ajakkes
He , i thought you would take a break today please take care .
Do a reaction on "Michiel de Ruyter Brilliant Admiral and Dutch National Hero "..
0:52 you may have heard of him he played an important role in Dutch history until he and his little brother were eaten by hungry royal Dutch supporters
There are some English vids about the brothers de Witt, but not with the complete history. You should watch the movie "Michiel de Ruyter"; "Admiral" (English title). That gives a complete tho romantisized story. The most accurate historical story about the brothers is told in this vid, which actually tells about the painting of the hanging of the brothers. ruclips.net/video/Hd0kkPUGcMQ/видео.html
Haven't seen this, i am also more interested in it. Like history a lot. Now even much more then i was on school, about 27 years ago 😉
In the clip you see people with a Orange Sjerp (I don't know the english word), that people are Orangisten.
You should watch the whole movie with the 3 of you.
Make a reaction to this film!!

we ate him.......what else ????????
Just because some random psychos took a bite doesn't mean "we" ate him. That's disgusting.
@@valentijnrozeveld3773 it was not one person but a large group that was loyal to the royal house.
the ordinary citizens it may sound crazy but if you learn the history you will understand
@@juliaboskamp9666 nah i know the history and i didn't mean 1 person. I meant to say that is was not we Dutch that ate him.
