  • Cities Skylines 2 has had a bit of a rough week, with the Beach Properties DLC receiving just 4% positive reviews. In response to the patch that launched PDX Mods, performance improvements, The Editor and more last week, Colossal Order has just released another hotfix patch to address crashing issues, add some UI elements, and other things (full patch notes linked below). In this video we'll talk the patch, mods in cities skylines 2, the disastrous launch of the Beachfront Properties DLC, and some new concerns of mine about future delays to Waterfronts in Cities Skylines 2. Thanks for watching! #citiesskylines2 #gaming #simulation #strategy

@@stewleis3518 well, it's not like we get any value of it anyways, they could have fixed the game first and then delivered, it's not like you can sue a game you preordered for being late anyways... here is the metaphor:
I have been going to a restaurant for 10 years, and they opened new restaurant in another location, promised much fancier service and quality there, so I go visit it. I order the steak that I usually eat at that restaurant, and then get delivered a literal piece of wood on a plate instead of stake, and and when I complain, they bring me sauce made of plastic, because I am a deluxe customer.... luckily the old location is still open, so I go back, and get served the same food I always have... but it tastes tainted now, because the trust was broken.

Regardless of whom is to blame, truth is, if the game ever does become worth playing on my rig, I will buy it (but only for a massive discount). Normalizing predatory behavior by gaming companies isn't where I want to be in 2024. Sad, because I really loved CS 1 and had huge hopes for this game.

I find it fascinating, because technically they're doing everything that a good company should do, from the very textbook of "be good, engage your community, and improve/innovate to excellence", but the base game was SO broken, and the DLC is SO pathetic as a result of pre-selling ultimate editions, that nothing they do matters.
It's looking like the base was not even 6 months early, but actually it just didn't work. To it's core almost everything in the game was stacked on weak code that compounded errors all the way up.
Maybe that's why they released when they did. They realised "this game will Never work as required, without starting over, so time to cut losses and just release..."

    • @LimpRichard

Good companies hire competent people. You can do all of the other "required" things but the actual requirement is having a brain.

    • @LadyLucyna

I disagree with you. What they did might've looked like textbook communication, but it was just completely tone-deaf, they eventually started pretending like there wasn't any valid criticism and then even tried to go radio silent, for which they got such immense backlash that they started releasing completely pointless updates again, which STILL didn't acknowledge the state the game was actually in and didn't answer any questions the players had.
Also, the base game does work, for the most part. It's just balanced in a way where the "complex features" (which are apparently be pretty straightforward and not complex) don't matter whatsoever because the city will balance itself out regardless and your choices don't have any meaningful impact. Except for the delivery chain, which was actually broken but got fixed.
I think the game really just wasn't ready and needed AT LEAST another year. I'm, still optimistic that CO can iron out the issues with time, and if they can't, modders will.

I still feel that they both ignored their customer base,l a base defined by Steam Workshop activity. We wanted a better mousetrap and they gave us a cheese grater. Bugs and performance issues aside (yes it was too early), their entire focus, to me was, and still is, wrong. CS was a good game made great by mods and assets. They ignored this. And this shambles of a mod editor release shows that modding was not a primary focus. This pathetic asset pack shows that again asset creation was not a high priority. They totally misread their audience.

Beachfront Properties appears to be the work of about 2 people for maybe one week. That's how sparse it is. If people could make assets on the Steam Workshop, we'd have far better and more numerous beach property assets within 24 hours than the paltry amount included in the asset pack.

I was such a happy person before knowing that Cities Skylines 2 was happening, I had so much ideas flowing in my head, I was contemplating it like it was a live dream, I was expecting it to be greater than seeing GTA 6 releasing, when they announced the game, and the teaser I was so brainwashed by it, if you look at the trailer I lower my head and feels cringe, it doesn't look 1% of what it promised to be, and the second ttailer is just a beautiful make-up to hide the ugliness of this horrific game, tragedy of the century, failure of the modern times, look how stupid we looked for thinking everything was that perfect like in that trailer, showing these things, obviously the ones who knew about it was silent, they couldn't say anything, but they already knew it, so the devs said to them it's Beta, early versions, the release version is gonna be finished and better, however after September, when all the RUclipsrs made their content, October came, no trailer showing the actual game that doesn't use beta footage to show off didn't happen, they released the game and for the shock of the people, it's the same thing, the beta is actually the game, full of bugs, full of problems, and then they, the devs, was laughing, acting like nothing happened, saying "city skylines 2 is the best city builder of this generation" you see this game on game awards, probably these people didn't play it because they don't understand this game, they just read from somewhere and assume it's good.... But don't you feel cringe when you see all these things that happened, leading to this? The game sucks, isn't looking good cor them, I have waited 8 years to see them completely kill Cities Skylines 1 so they could use the sequel to grab more of that easy money they have been collecting these past years without doing anything to deserve it, because they had the modders to do their job, it's easy, the game becomes successful and they think it's because of them, but the modders saves this game, without it CS could be dead, like the other failed city builder games that came trying to compete with it.... If it was made by another company, way bigger, I'm pretty sure people could be way more mad, and claiming that the game is a scam, because if you look the trailers, the way it was done, how they spoke about it and how we got it you can't straight up say to me it is not a scam... because I want to not be a delusional, and give trust to them, because this is gonna be dangerous, if people forget what they have done, if they do something nice and people ending up forgetting about it they will do even more worse things....
I'm not hating on them for no reason, they actually disrespected us all, and we can't deny it, they can't be allowed to fool us again by few more DLCs to get people blinded by something shine in the game to hide the obscure things that they're refusing to fix.

For me it's still the performance issue. Not enough is being done, just minor improvements for lower end pc's. This says to me that there just isn't much improvement that we can hope for. The fact the my cities grind to a halt at 200k pop with a 5900x is just really frustrating and frankly not worth playing regardless of the content they release.

Had to load, exit, load, exit, load, exit then it worked, haven't had any crashes since the patch and seems a bit faster, but not that noticable with 200k pop. Some radio mods still don't load. The land value fixes did help. Still not a great showing from CO, and they still haven't said the words "we apologize". The new assets may as well have been included in the original assets as they aren't different enough from the regular NA and EU low density assets. A slap in the face to those that would have to pay a la carte for the asset pack and a front hand backhand double slap in the face for those that bought the ultimate edition

Am I the only one that wants to see what a day in the CO office looks like? I admit, I like CS2 more than most seem to. I think it's got the bones to be way better than CS1, and I think a LOT of players forgot how little was in CS1 when it was first released. That being said, there is a lot of room for improvement. Like, a lot. The release of the DLC was, indeed, myopic at best. I bought the ultimate version, and I don't have any regret, but I also wouldn't complain if they pushed off the dlc to fix the base game, first. As for PDX Mods, I have to say that I mostly like it. If they could figure out a way to only keep the most up-to-date version of each mod on there, I would like it even more. Also, if there were better filtering options and, please, for the love of Pete, let me look at the mods in list view. I don't need to see a full-sized tile of the map that JoeShmoe uploaded without even a single picture of the map....6 times.
Anyway, I refuse to hate on the game, in general, but man, I really do hope they improve the produce because it definitely has room to grow.

Game crashes on desktop now way more than it did before. At least one per playthrough. Mods have made life easier, such as the line tool, road anarchy and move it. Game still suffers though from low variety of buildings. Its quite prominent when plopping row housing, they all look the same and it looks bad. Also skyscraper designs are few, and again it looks really bad. Game really needs an update on that regard, I dont mind paying for it, but they'll need to deliver at least 10 new building models per building category. Other than that its an alright game.

Yes , being someone who has the ultimate edition the beachfront DLC is so lame. In Oz you are taken for a ride for $15. Beachfront properties without a beach to put them near. Right up their with none of the houses have driveways to the rd connection or building single story houses with tower cranes. You would also think they would have done what they could to get mods up and running as fast as possible without issues as modders are the ones who can fix and finish the game properly for CO. They already worked out how to create and make available before CO provide the option. And the reason there is a whole 4 palm trees available (probably took them half an hour to design) is its code.... 4 trees equals 4 letters =CO giving as a coded finger...LOL.....Sim City will be back next year.

They need to get together with the publishers and delay every DLC for a year and bring in extra help to fix the game. KSP2 also released broken but have done so much (releasing around the same time). Offer partial refunds to appease the ultimate edition buyers.

Tried to launch the game for the first time since November thinking maybe the mods would have made the game playable along with all of the performance patches since then. Game loaded then there was no GUI in the game. Had to force close. Might very well be the last time I launch it. This is after preordering the ultimate edition as soon as it was posted, upgrading my computer to a Ryzen 9 7950x3d, a RTX 4070TI. Paradox has absolutely destroyed this franchise and it is such a shame. The fact that they have not done anything to try and make it right with the customers speaks to their true motives. The asset pack should have been a free gift to make amends but they think people will want to pay for it. I feel for the developers that truly tried to make a good game but their corporate overlords deserve everything they are getting.

They're between a rock and a hard place. At first glance, one would attribute this to continued mismanagement, but I believe this hints at a greater issue. They probably knew it wasn't the best idea to release DLC given the current state of the game, but they may well be running out of funds. Profits may be drying out as they desperately flail at the issues: they needed an injection of cash, knew this was a long shot but had to go for it. Yet it only served to feed the raging dumpster inferno.
Game's in a steep nosedive, and nothing short of (financial bailout) angels from Paradox is going to save it. This DLC release has definitively proven there's no goodwill left to expect any further money from the community. With plenty of good reason. The Paradox overlords must be sharpening the axe, pondering when enough is enough.

You know how SimCity 2013 died and made way for Cities: Skylines when it required an internet connection to play? Well, C:S2 with mods requires an internet connection or it won't launch. There is a workaround when mods are moved to a different directory, but still... the very thing that killed off SC2013 and that franchise has shown up in the C:S franchise. Unbelievable.

Patience and good-will is very much in short supply amongst the fanbase at the moment.
While on one hand it would've been great if the release of Beach Properties and the accompanying major patch had been a "home run", that could inadvertently cause issues in the medium-term if CO don't maintain that momentum.
Good-will is hard to earn, but easy to lose.
As much there is a lack of patience and goodwill from the fanbase, CO desperately needs a win of some kind however small, if only to steady the ship.
But the likelihood of that happening feels pretty remote at this time.
I've said it once, and I'll say it again - it'll be a miracle if CS2 sees out 2024.
SimCity 2013 got canned over far less.

I keep waiting to hear that PDX has severed ties with CO, and CO has gone under. I don't wish that to happen, but this launch, and the DLC were so bad, I'm amazed they havent simply given up. They bailed on Lamplighters for less. PDX's publishing arm has really been shoveling some low end garbage in the last few years.

I just had a thought about the lack of building designs.
On the one (game developer) side its kinda smart, think about it, they knew how much modding helped the first game, so creating less building designs _in the hope_ that modding would cover it, _would_ be a smart financial movel instead of paying people to develop more building designs and having the game files be even bigger, just have the players themsevles chose which extra building designs they want into their own games from modding.

Seeing the assets of my city was stunning when compared to whats have been done in CS2.Simcity 5 now comes with all the expansion and dlc possible, while very very not a perfect game I had a blast playing this 10 years old game. I would say, I had more fun then playing CS2. You should try it out and make a compare video for the fun of it.

In April, one would expect the solutions not the introduction of more problems. Maybe espcially ones that we are asked to play for. I still want to play the game without Beta-tester mindset, since Oct of last year, we're still testing...
Not sure how long CO expects "patience"? TBH, I believe they have used most of that up, now they are chewing into "good will"...
Really don't want to sound negative, however, for gamers that loved CS this is very painful. Still brillaint idea's, if we were all not actual humans and just data points. I wouldn't expect any more significant surprises here, I think we get how this is all going to play out. Just another method of monetizing our emotions.
