I started learning Spanish when I was 50. Not a lot of 50-year-olds attempt to learn a foreign language so I end up speaking online to a lot of young people. I often get discouraged because they learn so much faster than me. I have to constantly remind myself that this is MY journey and not someone else’s and I’m going to go at my speed. Your video really encouraged me to continue thinking this way and enjoy the journey! Thank you guys so much for being a part of it!

@@ssbtrumpet1 You can learn anything at any age (within physical boundaries). You just need to remember why you wanted to learn it. When you are younger you have more time and less commitments to stress over, so learning is a bit easier. The secret is WHAT you learn and NOT how long it takes.
Focus on 1 thing at a time.
Learn the basics. I learnt the alphabet, then numbers, then days of the week, months of the year. These sound simple but you can use there everyday. Hoy es viernes, nueve de septiembre. (today is September 9).
I'm 57 and work 45+ hours everyweek, so time is limited. Don't give up there's lots of ways to find time and learn. Use a 15 minute tea break to learn one word. :) Good luck

Sorry to reply in English, my Spanish isn't yet good enough to write this, haha. I feel like when new learners "get past" the intial beginner stage (1-3 months depending how much time they have), they think it's going to be easy from there. In fact, there are many levels - or as you say: "steps" - and each new level requires _at least_ as much effort, and is _as_ difficult - if not more difficult - as the first level (provided you're doing it right).
One can understand a little bit more as they pass through each level, but there's always going to be another level where you feel like a beginner again (until you reach a _very_ high - near native - level).
My observations are that the vast majority quit on the first plateau (step) after having their unrealistic exptations crushed; some don't quit, but remain in their "comfort zone" (never leaving the beginner's stage) to avoid feeling inadequate (that comfortable feeling of being able to understand almost everything), not willing to push themselves into the next level where it's _as_ uncomfortable as when they first started; and then the tiny minority (the one's who ultimately reach the level they want), push themselves onto the next level by forcing themselves to be uncomfortable again.
I can't tell you how many times I've heard people say:
_"I can understand when my teacher speaks to me, but I can't get a word of what's being said when I listen to the radio."_
It's because they've spent _all_ of their learning time working with beginner material, and haven't exposed themselves to anything else. It's the equivalent of a 5 year old beating him/herself up for not being able to understand Shakespeare.
You have to be patient, but at the same time: aggressive; no use spending years listening to stuff you can understand 100%; you have to constantly be seeking out material that is slightly too hard for you, and work your arse off to make a breakthrough. Rinse and repeat that process for a number of years and you _will_ get there, it's unavoidable, but it's uncomfortable.
That's exactly right. If only we persevered a bit more and if only we weren't so self conscious we would be out there living the life we want :)

I have been trying to learn Spanish for 20 years. When I lived on Mallorca, my neighbours spoke Mallorquin - a different version in each town. In Valencia, they spoke Catalá (but call it Valenciano...), and here in Galicia, they speak Galego, again, a different version for each pueblo. Trying to find someone with whom to practise is impossible. Thank goodness for G and C!

Some days I can have great conversations with native speakers. Other days I struggle and feel like, why did I waste all this time just to be here?? This video was just what I needed to see. Culture and language are one. This is so true. You can only really understand another culture by hearing how it is expressed in its own words. I am a fluent French speaker and am finding it really useful in my new project to learn Spanish. Frenar/freiner...

Such a wonderful video Cynthia. I've watched it so many times now because of how beautifully and incitefully you've captured the experience of learning a new language. I wish everyone learning a language would see this video.
Even before seeing your video, I have always felt that learning another language truly opens up your mind to a new world. Something totally wonderful and at the same time completely unexpected. It's a feeling that's is almost impossible to explain to someone who hasn't been there themselves. I thought I must be exaggerating the feeling - no one else could possibly feel this way. But when you expressed those same thoughts even more powerfully I knew that I wasn't alone.
Thank you so much for this beautiful video and all your others that help us to learn a new language and everything wonderful that comes along with it. ❤

Yes, it's a long way off but the first steps are the most important, you've started ! Look back occasionally to see how far you've gone. Don't let impatience rule, you will get there. I can translate Spanish to English but not that easy vice versa. I also came to the point of like I am not learning much.But I still go on.

Ah, Cynthia! No puedo expresar bastante agradecimiento para esta grabación. Es que hace casi cuatro años, descubrí tú y Gordon y empecé mirando sus videos. Fue la forma de mi aprendizaje principiante. Ahora, tengo un nivel intermedio después de clases diariamente. De hecho ¡yo he estado en el mismo nivel por dos años! A veces, yo pienso que estoy no mejorando. Pero, en este video tú has dijiste TODO que yo he experimentado. Pierdo palabras en mi idioma nativo constantemente. Mis compadres piensan que yo sea una idiota. La curva de mi maestría está plano, pero no tiro la toalla. Me gusta mucho tu actitud y gracias por tu consejo. Llevo mucho años estudiando español y a veces me he preguntado lo que está que quiero lograr...La verdad para mí, es que todavía no estoy seguro pero continuo disfrutar el camino. Sus palabras son muy sabio y me parece que has aprendido mucho durante tu viaje y tu exploración de ingles. Ya he llegado una edad cuando tengo más que sesenta años y estoy seguro cuando empecé mi viaje en español pensaba que quizás un día podía llegar a un día cuando sería fluidez en español, pero ahora sé que no va a pasar pero no me preocupa. El secreto para mí, es que he aceptado mis limitaciones y he dado la cuenta que hay muchas cosas que todavía no comprendo en mi lengua materna y me ayuda que darse cuenta que es mejor para mejorar poco a poco y no se tiene prisa. Gracias de nuevo por sus palabras de sabiduría y consejo, muy apreciadas.

Son verdades importantes. El estudio de otro idioma es un viaje sin terminar. siempre habrá más a aprender, igual cuanto ya sabes. Pero el viaje es más importante que la destinación. y en cada fase puedes aprovechar tus conocimientos para comunicarte y para leer. Con los años, mejorarás pero no es necesario ser perfecto.

Claro que si! Aprender un idioma te ayuda a ver las cosas diferente. Una de las cosas que me encantan de los espagnoles es cuando hay un pequeño inconveniente como hacer que algo caiga - un vaso por ejemplo - nadie va a decir : “ dejaste caer el vaso”, no pero si “ el vaso se ha caido”.

Muchas gracias, Cynthia. Soy aleman, hablo ingles tambien y aprendo espanol desde el ano 2009. "Light- speed-spanish" y "Cynthias-Insights" son mis paginas favoritas, es verdad. Me encanta aprender espanol, porque no solo aprendo un idioma, sino aprendo muchas otras cosas (pais, cultura, gente, comida...) es muy interessante y util. Nuestro plan de mi mujer y de mi es invernar en Espana, tan pronto no necesitamos trabajar, porque el tiempo es tan bueno. Mi region favorita es Andalucia, hemos ido ahi dos veces y me encanta.. -Queda saludable-

Fantastico Cynthia! No recordar la palabra en tu idioma me ha pasado muchas veces! Como yo hablo 5 idiomas y uso 3 en mi dia al dia esto me ocurre cada dia! Cuando llegas a un nivel de dominar un idioma muy bien y hablar lo con fluidez, simplemente hay palabras que no se pueden traducir porque son una parte de otra cultura. Mi lengua materna es Esloveno y por mi trabajo hablo esloveno, croata y ingles cada dia. Mezclo las palabras y a veces los pongo juntos en una frase que ultimamente consiste de palabras de 3 idiomas. Buen video, muy inteligente.

Gracias Cynthia. Recordar estas cosas y ser paciente es importante. La mejor parte de tener un proposito (como aprender espanol), es la lucha. El viaje. Las experiencias que ganas intentando alcanzar tu meta. Si tienes tu proposito siempre en tu cabeza (de la manana hasta la noche si es possible), tendras calidad de vida. Alcanzar una meta es el fin de la adventura. Solo cuando luchas por el exito estas verdaderamente vivo. Solo las cosas dificiles tienen valor.

Si de verdad aprender cambia todo, y un idioma aún más , como tu dices hay que pensar en eso como en un viaje y lo que mas te gusta en un viaje son los momentos de descubrimientos, de la gente, de la forma en que hablan, en que reaccionan, de los paisajes, de los colores, son momentos muy bonitos. Ahora estoy jubilado y aprender un idioma me ayuda mucho a mantenerme curioso y a acercarme a los demás.

I found that when I started learning Spanish I would quit for a few months cos I was thinking "I don't get it, wtf are conjugations, it doesn't make sense, maybe it's not the meant for me" but what I realised was that I was hearing sounds that my brain could barely recogize let alone link it to a meaning, so I went fully into listening to everything in Spanish as well as basic lessons. I would sleep with earphones in listening to documentaries thinking " don't try to understand just experience the sounds" I understood all of this video but my new challenge is "speak" I know how to listen and understand but I gotta step into phase 2 and speak but it's hard to leave this comfort zone plus I'm not much of a talker anyway
Barakat go back to school and learn what conjugations are. Really???
the secret is... to keep going. Comfort zones are really tough but they never stay still. They either expand or contract. ;)
This is a great video....everything you mentioned makes sense. You should try to
demonstrate your skills in English. As you mentioned, you can never stop learning
a language. Thank you for this meaningful video.

I couldn't agree with you more, learning another language definitely changes your whole life for the better . I grew up bilingual German/English but my passion is Spanish. When visiting Germany earlier this year I found myself mixing in Spanish words while speaking German...LOL

jaja muchas gracias. Desafortunadamente, es Portugués de Portugal y aún soy muy beginner, pero poco a poco.
I usually need about two years to learn a language to a fluent level. This mean that I am able to have a decent conversation and express doubts or questions I have about words and expression I don't know yet. I think that's real fluency - not to know each and every word/expression, but to be able to communicate that without having to interrupt the conversation. The more languages I speak, the easier it gets to learn a new language. But - it also takes more time to repeat and keep (or restore) my knowledge. I put a lot of work into that process. I see through my vocab regularly, write texts or read books/watch films regularly etc. So for me learning a language is not only about the journey (which I ADORE), but also about keeping the level up by constant work and repetition.

Les digo cada día “¡Tienes que pensar con el cerebro español!”. Si intentas de traducir las palabras únicas de tu propio idioma al español, no hay a funcionar nunca. La gente española tiene ideas completamente diferente del mundo. Pues, expresan los sentimientos diferentes… solo hay que pensar cómo los españoles

Great advice. I, too, hate these people saying you can learn a language in 6 months or less. NO. YOU. CAN'T. Just to the right is a video titled "Spanish in a Month..." Not even if you lived in Spain and were totally motivated. (He also gained substantial muscle mass and learned to dj in a month.) I have been learning Spanish for 50 years, so I must be done, right? Ha! Nope. Although I test "near native", there's still something new to learn every day. I was in Russian immersion 8 hours a day for a year. So, my Russian must be great, right? Again-- nope. It's frustrating. High school students wonder why they can't have even a simple conversation by third year, but when you consider how little classroom time they actually get, it's not surprising at all. Again, I appreciate you comments. Thanks from Peru, Indiana!

Es verdad que ud dice de idiomas. Soy gringo y hablo muy bien pero siempre aprendiendo algo en otra idioma. Ahora mismo estoy aprendiendo francés . Mucho más difícil que Espanol. Mi Espanol es desde la granja o finca. los Mexicanos primero y después Dominicanos. Mi novia es Dominicana.

I understood most of what she was saying...but I found myself struggling with the Castillian pronunciation.....always wishing against working through it.....I really wanted to hear the "s" sound instead of "Th" Other than that it was exciting to realize I understood so much......I use italki.com to converse in Spanish because I have no one around here to converse with
Very very bueno.
I took 3 years of Spanish in high school, but that was 45 years ago. I felt that the 3rd year was just too complicated for me, so I stopped. A couple of years ago I signed up for an online Spanish class through a University. The first year went well, but I felt really overwhelmed during the second year. I work with a lot of Spanish speaking patients in which I have to give commands. “Respira normal, respira profundo...” honestly I count on acting out what I need them to do. They didn’t teach the vocabulary I needed in the classes I took. For instance, how do you ask someone how short of breath they are? I ask them if it is difficult to breathe, or at least try to. Usually I think I can get my point across, but it’s hard.
Puedes decir: ¿Le falta el aliento?, ¿Puede respirar con normalidad?, ¿Le cuesta respirar?

Entiendo cuando dijiste no sé como se dice en mi propio idoma ...no es tanto lo que olvido en ingles ...pero es mas que puedo decir algunas cosas en espanol que nosotros decimos en una manera muy diferente en ingles...por ejemplo ...no me caigo bien con los numeros.....los numeros me cuestan..como se dicen en ingles?? ' I don't like numbers?' .otra cosa que no nos dicen ...el lenguaje hablado es muy diferente que el lenguaje escrito....y como la gente corriente puede hablar en la calle es muy diferente que en la clase ...y tambien hay el idioma de la casa ..el idioma de la oficina ...hay muchas idiomas por tantos esferas y temas de la vida en solo un idoma. Cuando estaba leyendo un libro en espanol mi hermano me quiería hacer un traduccion ...pero no lo pude..lo entiendo lo que estaba leyendo ...pero en ingles no tuvo sentido ...a menos que desvío del espanol un poco...lo siento por mis errores por cierto soy una principante

Hello Cynthia. I have a question. I have been learning spanish for a very long time. I'm 68 now .K may be about B1 or B2 but I don't care ! The subjunctive is used for hypothetical statements in spanish , which means ,desires, hopes etc which you know . We are told that the spanish use it a lot. My question is this. Do the spanish live in a world where they expect nothing will happen ? some kind of ethereal existence
where nothing will occur ? a dream world. Is the Spanish mind so different ? Or is the statement that the Spanish use it a lot totally misleading ? No offence intended but I'd love to know your thoughts on this . Muchas gracias !
The Subjunctive is used for hypothetical actions, as you said, but is used in many other contexts. Mostly to distiguish between reality and factual and non factual, but also for future events (for example with 'cuando'), the structure is also used in negative commands, for requests... haha the other day I was using an exprimidor and my son said "What is that?" An exprimidor. I couldn't remember the word juicer.
It's happened to me sooooo many times :)
I used toteach in an international school in Spain, and my A Level chemistry students to,d me that they could only discuss educational things in English, never in Spanish, but all domestic language was in Spanish but never in English. They felt like weird hybrid beings, not really fluent in either language.
