CLIP DESCRIPTION:
Murnau (John Malkovich) and Schreck (Willem Dafoe) argue about how to finish the film.
FILM DESCRIPTION:
The torturous production of the classic 1922 vampire film Nosferatu is recreated in this stylized account of director F.W. Murnau and his obsession with creating realistic horror by any means necessary -- even if those means include actual bloodletting. The film begins as Murnau (John Malkovich) is ready to take his unauthorized interpretation of the Bram Stoker tale on location in Czechoslovakia. There, the director has arranged for his cast and crew to live in the same castle in which they will shoot their parts, as they all wait for their co-star, Max Schreck (Willem Dafoe) -- Murnau's choice to play Count Orlok -- to arrive. Their leader has warned them that Schreck is a student of the Stanislovsky method of performance and will not respond to them out-of-character. Nothing, however, can prepare them for the real thing: when the actor arrives, he's already in full Gothic regalia, asserting that he is indeed a vampire. Schreck makes good on his claims by terrorizing the cast and crew, attacking Murnau's original cinematographer (Wolfgang Muller) and plucking bats out of the air for midnight snacks. Director E. Elias Merhige previously made his name with his experimental theater productions and with his horrific film school thesis, Begotten.

“You know I’m a bit of a scriptwriter myself”
😂
@@mal_3157 I'm something of a vampire myself
"Tell me how you would harm me when even I don't know how I could harm myself."
Such a beautiful and tragic depth that sets Max Schreck/Graf Orlok apart from other vampires.
Also brings some serious full-circle qualities when looking at Tanz der Vampire (from The Fearless Vampire Killers, which took some clear inspiration from Nosferatu), in which Graf von Krolock sings about wishing to turn to ash but doesn't have the guts to.
It's a great line, but makes no sense given he knew sunlight would kill him.
@@alexshaykevich509 And then there's that 🤣🤣😆
He did this, American Psycho, and Boondock Saints all within a year of each other. Willem Dafoe is one of the greatest actors ever
Of all currently living American screen actors I will go so far as to say he is the greatest and so is Rourke and Hackman.
@@Tabish29
Pacino?
Deniro?
Hoffman?
Walken?
Bardem?
Hopkins?
Duvall?
@@kangaroo3708 he has more range. More intense. Bardem and Hopkins aren't American (Hopkins may be naturalized I'm not sure). Willem has played gangsters and psychos and a family man and every performance is a masterstroke. I can't picture Pacino or de Niro pulling off a Bobby Peru or Max Shrek character as well as Willem has done.
@@kangaroo3708 our of all these dudes I'd give Walken the widest range.
@@Tabish29
O you said American
🤦♂️
Malkovich and Dafoe were the perfect team.
"Then I will replace you with a double" "You will have no close-ups none"
Funny lines :D
... i don't think we need the writer... great line
I thought it was "Then I will replace you with the Devil!"
@@harrisonwestphall2381 Same.
Only John Malkovich can insult, yell and rage at a vampire and not get his head twisted off.
Watching Malkovich pause and try to collect himself when he tries explain that they need the writer.
Compositionally, what a fantastic shot.
I am sure that has been a argument for years.
Holy shit, I can even hear a little bit of the green goblin in his voice.
anakinfan8 a raimimemer commenting on a willem dafoe film. YOU’RE PATHETICALLY PREDICTABLE.
Which is fitting since his performance here is what sealed the deal and locked the Green Goblin for him.
"I don't think we need the writer any longer."
Spoken like a true movie studio executive.
The fact that Willem didn't win an Oscar is beyond me
It's ultimately understandable why, as he was competing against Benicio Del Toro that year and "Traffic" was all the rage that awards season. But as great as he is, I myself think more about Dafoe's portrayal of Max Schreck and how it's such a multifaceted portrayal of something so monstrous, yet strangely sympathetic, especially when compared to Murnau's madness and sociopathy.
Will C Fair enough
@@AngelofMusic04
Don't forget Joaquin Phoenix in Gladiator.
That's what most people think, but again that was comp years againts Phoenix and Del Toro
Santiago Navarro this is good acting? He felt like a goosebumps character. This was cheesy
Willem Dafoe as Nosferatu is beauty
Willem dafoe is villain
You know, I'm something of a vampire myself.
Me too
The first time I sat down to watch this movie I ate half a box of "Count Chocula".
Chocolate RAIIIIIINNNNN
some stay dry and others feel the pain!
Nothing beats John Malcovich flipping out.
Especially in "Burn after reading"!
Tom Hardy flipping out
I've always wondered why he was so reluctant to travel by sea. I guess it has to do with a vampires inability to cross running water. He might not know how to destroy himself but his instincts keeps him away from such things.
its because the spirit of Ulmo runs in all flowing water
@@jmdomaniii I see a Silmarillion reader over here
"I'll eat her later. " Soooo good!
"HOW DARE YOU! HOW DARE YOU DESTROY MY PHOTOGRAPHER! YOU IDIOT!"
my favourite line in this whole movie. I watch this film just for that scene and the ending escpecially.
Connor Brennan "WHY NOT THE SCRIPT GIRL?!"
"I'll eat her later..."
John Malkovich is up there with Nicolas Cage and Al Pacino in the freak out department.
And Leonardo Di Caprio.
Ironic that the film which became a cult classic is a fictionalized retelling of the making of the first cult classic.
why does the bloody writer always get the short end of the stick!!!????
Two of some of the greatest actors in Cinema in the same scene. WOW.
Count Orlok: I'll eat her later
Me: He'll eat her later, but Jon got frown furiously. 😆
LOL ... I am loathe to admit it myself, but we need the writer .... brilliant ;)-
I mean as far as actors go, this is like the unstoppable force meets the immoveable object.
So which is which?
Is this a comedy or what... Willem Dafoe cracks me up! XD
Nikola Tesla It's a horror comedy with some extremely pitch black humor.
This film is probably not for dipshits suck as ya self…it’s alright, your probably a Twilight fan lol
i miss this kind of cinema ...
I mean honestly. Method acting taken to a whole absurd level. If I had been John, I would have taken a skillet to Willem/Max's head and yelled over and over again - "YOU'RE AN ACTOR!"
Willem Dafoe's character is an actual vampire. The cast and crew was told he was a method actor to hide his vampire traits.
John Malkovich is a legend of these times
2:07 - 2:26
why didn't you mention this before
*schreck shrugs*
This movie is one of the best vampire movies ever made. In my books there are just three
really good ones.
Which are the other ones?
FFC’s Bram Stocker and 30 days of night
@@itsallgoodman4108 you forgot twilight 1,2,3
@@itsallgoodman4108 no love for let the right one in or george remoros martin?
@@itsallgoodman4108 You need to watch Perfect Creature dude.
William dafoe deserves so much more.
What does that even mean?
Deserves so much more what?
Willem Dafoe as Max Schenk/Count Orlok (Nosferatu) is really fantastic with John Malkovich as Wilhelm Murnau.
"watch your , FINGER!!!!!!!"
It's a very good monster movie.
only problem is they coulda made him a little more creepier like the original
I don't think they had the budget for that.
oh s*** it's count orlock from Nosferatu
+Isaac Flores no shit sherlock

you're welcome
0:00 Me to Robert Eggers for casting Bill Skarsgard and Lily-Rose Depp instead of Willem Dafoe and Anya Taylor-Joy.
Wie erfrischend sind die Beobachtungen Schoppenhauers über das Leben im Vergleich zu den vielen “alles ist möglich “-Autoren unserer Zeit!
wow, Green Goblin had appeared outside Spiderman movie
FUN FACT: THE PRODUCERS OF SPIDERMAN SPOT Willem Dafoe performance in this movie before he cast as the Green goblin
¡Actoràzos! Toda la pelìcula, son ellos dos
Orlok: the ship. *shakes head*
Mesmerising movie. Love it.
The director Edmund Elias merhige is also made a film called “begotten” known for its disturbing images
You know, I’m something of a vampire myself
He reminds me of Nosferatu!
Deshenayaxo70 this film is based on the behind scenes on nosferatu
it's Count Orlok you uncultured swine.

John malkovich's is a brilliant he's always been probably one of my top five actors I love him
Sincerely Visco 242/ The phantom of the Opera
I always wonder why Merhige didn't direct more successful Hollywood films after this banger
His follow up film was Patient Zero which bombed at the box office and was critically panned so much that he went back to the theater industry.
Quiet down ya dingus!
seems like a comedy......Willem Dafoe looks scarier without all the make-up....LOL
You! You will have no close ups! None!
WDF & JM together in a film. Rarely such a collaberation.
Ce film est formidable j adore . Acteur dafow en shreck nosferatu et potentielement un vrai vampire idée géniale .
Oui plusieurs belles performances
There is still one early black n white old vampire movie left ,modeling same as this one, cant find it ?
I have shots!!
classic comedy lol
Same guy who made begotten made this? Crazy
Begotten was almost like if Nosferatu was made in the 80s
William Defoe rocks.
I never knew they made another nosforatu movie till now I thought they couldn’t do it no more cause the widow of stocker sued the makers in 1922 and they had to destroy all copies and I thought that meant can’t make nosforatu again
Malkovich was top-notch here too
La metafora perfetta di una umanità che divora se stessa
This film was funny af
So weird seeing gargamel bald
Ferris bueller day off. Back to school I guess
I loved this film i thought it was awesome
You should not confuse the actor with the part he plays. Who cares if an actor is a serial killer in real life, or is going to be going to jail for income tax evasion, voted for the other guy, hates everybody, et cetra - if he is right for the part, that's what matters to the audience,... right? "Mr.Sulu, likes girls" - George Takei.
6 years later...
I would split it into at least two groups. I don't want any of my money or influencing data (ie tune in ratings etc) to go to or help the serial killer even if I agree they killed the role.
Jesus that film was funny.
How dare you! ( Hitler hair ) How dare you destroy my photographer! ( More Hitler hair ) You idiot! ( Maximum Hitler hair )
William Dafoe?
Yeah
Malkovich's accent is bizarre
Did i cyare?
I would ask why he fears the sea.
Something to do with vampires crossing flowing water
No shit,genius
Why Nosferatu looks like a human

Ow 🤯🤯
This biopic about Louis de Funes is kinda weird...
I don't really understand why he wouldn't want to sail.
If you did a bit of research into vampires you’d know why
@@sourkraut5369 this was your queue to tell him why, epic fail
@@thefacelessgamer2297 you saying epic fail is an epic fail. dont care enough to explain how vampires work to someone on youtube lol
vampires are unable to cross running water, classically speaking. just thought I'd explain...
Y didn't he want to sail?
Count Orlock wont sail I think keeping with traditional vampire lore. Originally vampires could not cross rivers or sail, I think.
@@RicardoMoralesMassin wow. Never knew. Thanks.

this movie is weird
Weird. But brilliant :-)
You will have _no_ _closeups!_ NONE! 🤏
