What is Nimona (and why it shouldn't matter)

- Netflix's film Nimona not only brings to life the comics of ND Stevenson, but shines a light on something we all do. We often use labels and stereotypes to understand people, but those labels can be hurtful. Nimona, Ballister Boldheart, and the other characters of the film teach us lessons about why we are more than just a label and how we can better treat each other.

#nimona #animation #videoessay
I would love to see Disney bring back Blue Sky Studios in any form.
Aside from that, Nimona is also one of my favorite Netflix animated movies behind Pinocchio
I agree that Nimona and Pinocchio were two of Netflix's best animated releases. I know they have had a focus on trying to have more animation geared to younger audiences, but both of those films fit a family audience and are fantastically made.
Agreed. We need it back.
This is a very wise video. Also, having never before heard of Nimona, I now very much wish to. Thanks.
One family movie that I can think of that dealt in shades of gray is Toy Story 4. Yes, Gabby Gabby is an antagonist for a good chunk of the film, but you’d be hard pressed to call her a villain by the end of it. As she points out, she’s not so different from the “hero”Woody.
This is a good analysis. Toy Story has always had shades of gray and Toy Story 4 leans into that the most. I assume that is why many people don't like it, beyond the idea that everyone thought the 3rd film was the right ending. (I have mixed feelings about that personally.) It also has a lack of a definite happy ending which falls in line with some of the examples I put on screen when I talked about it like Marriage Story. Great call!
@@ModernMouse Also, Megamind was literally about a smart, kind person becoming a villain because he was labeled as one, just like Nimona, while the hero goes evil. In fact, a lot of DreamWorks movies are about labels when you think about it, like Shrek, Kung Fu Panda, HTTYD, etc.
I absolutely loved Nimona, so thank you for mentioning it! You presented a great analysis and several good connections to ponder 👍🏽
The animation was so beautiful, and its style made sense once I learned that the story originated from a graphic novel-gonna read that now too. 🤓
I loved the fairytale adventure, the humor, and the heart. Definitely experienced some good catharsis as well 🥺🥹
I reallyyy hope to see more Nimona or more similar styles of movies 🙏🏽
Oh! And the soundtrack! 👩🏽🎤❤️🔥🖤💖⚡️🤩
The soundtrack was a ton of fun. I like that it leaned into the Joan Jett, riot grrrl sound. I thought that was a perfect fit for the chaos of the character.
Modern Mouse I hope you’ve got a new Disney Era or Pixar Era video ready to post now
I've got a video coming out this week and then I'll be working on the Pixar Eras video. Trust me it's coming.
Great movie !
I was really surprised by it. I went in with low expectations but it really nailed some things I love about what animation can do and how it's storytelling is different from live action.
Anyway I wish Nimona still was Disney’s
Superb commentary on a wonderful film.
Appreciate that. Glad to see you back in the comments here!
@@ModernMouse I’m always lurking and liking!
