    I think that what will always set WWD apart from all other documentaries is its artistic vision. From the shot composition to the music to the narratives WWD is interested in its viewers feeling a certain way about what they're witnessing. It doesn't just communicate facts, it uses filmmaking to try to get across the feeling of whatever area its showing, from the desolation of Chinle to the majesty of the Morrison to the melancholy of Hell Creek. No other paleodocumentary has tried to do that. No other paleodocumentary aspires to be a piece of art, let alone succeeds as well as WWD does.

      I agree 100%! In fact a lot of what you said is going to be the subject of part 2. It was originally going to be one video but it was just getting too long.

      For me, prehistoric park only barely edges out walking with dinos, as big does it act as a “highlight reel” of the preceding, but it also combines the nature mockumentary feel with animal rescues.

    For me, 18:53 where the stegosaurus deliberately kills an infant diplodocus is one of the realest moments in WWD. This show avoided dinosaur tropes like 'herbivore solidarity'.

    Something I particularly like about WWD, is how realistic the animals moves.

    I remember first watching this series in the third grade and despite the scientific Inaccuracies, Walking with Dinosaurs still holds up. All the points you made are very true and makes me stand by what I've said before, Walking with Dinosaurs is one of the most cherished documentaries in history. I can't wait for part 2 of your analysis.

    What set it apart from other dino docs was the lack of cutaway scenes to 3D cross-sections an animal's diagram. Instead this was 30 uninterrupted minutes just like a real Attenborough documentary.

    Like others have said WWD sets apart of everyother doc despite It’s flaws because WWD animals look and act like real animals not humanaized characters or movie monsters + like you said they’re in a realistic environment, not a generic swamp or volcano or unrealistic like the last part of When Dinosaurs Roamed America (which is the closest to WWD in my opinion) full of grass.
    Also it’s use of animatronics + CGI just like Jurassic Park watching the animatronic of a section of the animal makes it feel real because we are watching something real so when we watch the cgi model looks more tangible plus the cgi model and the enviorenment react with each other adding another dimmension to the realism that other dinodocs lack.

    15:30 Honestly, this was probably the part of WWD that I disliked the most: It was just so darn _Depressing!_
    With the major exception of the Diplodocus episode (& the Antarctica episode?), it seemed like Every Single episode of WWD had this air of fatalism hanging over it, as if the show was trying to hammer into our brains that in the end, all these majestic creatures really _were_ “destined to die” (at least from our 20/20 hindsight perspective).
    WW Beasts was much better (ie less depressing) in that regard: The first episode showed the death of the “walking whale” Ambulocetus, but the narration assured us that even despite this current tragedy, his line still had a great future in store thru to the modern era. Even the whale episode (Basilosaurus), which told us that that species would eventually disappear, still gave us a “happy ending” for the mother protagonist, as despite her line disappearing in the distant future, _she_ at least could have a moment of happiness with her child.

    • @LordVaderTyrannus
      @LordVaderTyrannus  2 года назад +2

      I don't see how what you're saying is a bad thing at all. Showing that death is a part of nature and that all are vulnerable to it is a good message. Technically everything *is* destined to die. Every individual who has lived and will ever live will die, as will every species. That's just a fact.
      New Blood and Cruel Sea (for the Ophthalmosaurus, the main protagonists of the episode, at least) also have happy endings. And all of the sad endings do exactly what WWB did for the Basilosaurus; reminding us that they still have descendants. During the Liopleurodon's death the narrator talks about how marine reptiles will do great for another 90 million years, the Ornithocheirus literally gets eaten by babies of his own kind as the narrator remarks that he will make a fine meal for the next generation, and the extinction is followed by a reminder that modern birds are dinosaurs.
      Also I'd hardly call WWB more positive and less sad then WWD when the first episode literally has a newborn baby bird being eaten alive by a bunch of ants. They both have a perfect mix of happy and sad.

      Great points. Maybe it’s just the fact that the music is so recognizably somber in WWD than in WWB (as that was the music you played at that part of the video).
      Either way, I’ll need to rewatch both in order to reevaluate my opinion! 😅

    "PBS The Dinosaurs!", "When Dinosaurs Roamed America", and "Dinosaur Planet" still hold up to; those three shows along with the Walking with Series are in my opinion the golden standards of what a prehistoric documentary should be.

    WWD’s big problem is with the whole idea of animals being “destroyed to fail because of better animals”. New Blood in particular is horrible with this narrative, and it’s entire symbolism and theme is extremely inaccurate based on what we know now (dinosaurs DIDN’T take over during the Triassic, and they were actually WORSE adapted to the harsh dry conditions than the “primitive” pseudosuchians)

    WWD: It´s literaly called Walking With Dinosaur
    Also WWD: 3 whope episodes are from POV of non-dinosaur species, 2 of them has less then 3 true dino species!

    • @LordVaderTyrannus
      @LordVaderTyrannus  3 года назад +10

      Actually only two are. Coelophysis, Diplodocus, Leaellynasaura, and Tyrannosaurus are the focuses of their respective episodes. Postosuchus is not actually the main focus of New Blood. And I’d say that’s justified as marine reptiles and pterosaurs are just as important as the dinosaurs.

    • @Charlie-Charlot
      @Charlie-Charlot 3 года назад +5

      It’s not really an issue for me. The word Dinosaur has a larger appeal to the general public than terms such as “pterosaurs” or “marine reptiles that you thought were dinosaurs when you were 9 years old but are actually related to monitor lizards and snakes”. The same way most documentaries focus a segment or even entirely on a famous dinosaurs like T.Rex or spinosaurus more recently. If it was called “Walking with the lifeforms that happened to live on earth from 200-66 million years ago but aren’t all dinosaurs” it wouldn’t have appealed to as much people as it did.
      Focusing on animals other than dinosaurs was, in my opinion, an essential part of what made this documentary the best. It adds to the credibility of the environments depicted. Dinosaurs aren’t just big CGI things running in front of some random Forrest but actual animals evolving in their environment.
