In the process of replacing the starter on my 2012 acadia, i agree with many people here definitely not the easiest starter to get to and remove. Currently i will have to remove the knock sensor because of lack of space to get the starter out, it think it would have been helpful to say or suggest to either unclip or mention the bolt to remove it, i dont have enough space to wiggle it out, twist this turn that way, but this was the best video ive seen on removing the starter.
Yeah that knock sensor was issue
Your telling me, I don't which was worse trying to unclip the sensor or trying to find the bolt hidden by the starter cables lol, but I wish I would have sprayed the bottom two bolts on the cat cuz both of them broke off clean
I love the “first of all good luck” lol. I have a 2012 Acadia and let me say…I hate this car. Once it hit 7 years old we have had nothing but problems. Alternator had to be changed 3 times already, just paid $6,000 for a new transmission, $3,000 worth of work on the air conditioner, and now pretty sure the starter is going out (as why I found this video) and a ton of other things are not working on it and needs to be fixed. So we will definitely be watching this video if it is the starter.
Also…thanks for making this video. Definitely helping us save money by doing it ourselves vs bringing it to the shop. Thanks!
Oh damn the alternator is a Bit*h I did the alternator twice it failed from oil leak
Dude amazing video we spent two hours total to remove and replace starter thank you for the info and great mechanic
Welcome
this video was very helpful.. I did my 2012 Acadia starter today and the info was very specific and detailed. Using the long extensions was a great tip and worked like a charm. Thanks for posting this video RB.
Oh yeah this was crazy set up I wish there was easier way
Best how-to video of all time! You told exactly what size sockets were needed for everything, how many nuts/bolts needed to be removed with each step, and how to get to each of them. You are a God-send! Thank you!!!
Note- The only difficult part of this job is getting the starter out after removing the bolts. However, removing the wire connector that goes to the knock sensor, directly behind the starter, gives you the room you need to pull the starter out without a problem. Figuring that out took me more time than anything else.
Yup this is crazy design setup
awesome video, detailed enough, helped me a lot !!!
Yeah bro this is terrible spot for starter I wounded what the engineers were thinking when they selected this spot
This is very easy job.
Please let me add some tips when ever you replace the starter one this vehicle.
Always spray WD 40 or a break fluids on the catalytic converter (that will make it easier to come off).
Remove the knock sensor
It's too close to the starter and there is a good chance that you will break knock sensor connector while trying to remove the starter.
Remove the big plate mounted underneath
(It's a 4 15mm long bolts).
That will give you about 2 inches extra room so you can remove the catalytic converter easier )
And finally pump you do not know what it is. It's a brake booster auxiliary pump
Easy? What are you on?? Thats the hardest starter ive had to change. 😂😂👀
@@anastasiacarter1849
Yes it is so easy.
I'm not on any thing
I'm just a professional auto repair technician.
Maybe it just you need more experience
I agree, I need more experience Mr. Professional Auto technician. You should give me some, I actually have always wanted to be a mechanic since I was a kid. What's up? 🏆⭐
I did this with a basic wrench and rachet set in the street outside my house. I don't have hardly any experience but I carry plenty of potential. 😁
@@jorgetushman6700 bro you're on crack, no it's not easy but of course it's not going to be hard compared to a bmw 325 xi but those are outlier's
@@JohnDoe-hx1wx
I've done it so many times in my shop,
I have more than 35 years experience in auto repair. , I repaired cars more than your hair count.
Probably it's you who needs more knowledge
Superb info.
Video is on point👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍👍
Yup
Is this the same as a 2014 Chevy traverse?
Very good👌
Damn bro I just did one of these just todayyy I didn’t record it cuz I had a video up already
Great video. How easy would it be to bring the cat up through the top? I'll be doing this with the car on the ground.
Prolly not gonna come up
I would be curious to know what a labour guide allows for time for this job.
3 hours
@@RBTheMechanic Thank you and thanks for making the video. I did see a comment on another video where a guy did it by only removing the oil filter, I think that would be pretty tough.
Even the oil filter placement is a bad design on these cars!
@@peterl2017 bad spot
@@peterl2017 yeah if u can sneak in there then u might be able to do it
Remove the front motor mount, faster and easier
No clearance just doing that alone
removing the starter or the engine ,good video tho
Fuckin bullshit they coulda mounted that starter on the trans side of the bell housing on the top….
Definitely they could had done that it was bad thinking by their engineer
Looks like your are Delivering a Babe in an Operation room , these cars have so small room
to move around despite their big size !
This was seriously bad design
Will this work for a 2017?
Yea
The video was helpful, but anyone saying this is an easy job is not being honest. Most starters are fairly easy, this is the first time I have had to remove a cat. convertor to replace a starter. I did a bad one on a BMW once but normally they are pretty simple. With age and in the rust belt can makes things worse and exhaust nuts would not have came apart without heat - studs would have broke. It was not a terrible job but not an easy one either. Not your average DIY job. I could see a novice struggling quite a while to do it.
Sending mine to the shop lol I usually do all repairs myself
At least you will have a warranty on parts and labour if it happens to go defective. I have had 3 starters go bad in the matter of a few days on different vehicles in the last years.
Is this the same as a 2011too cause I think mine is gone. Have a new battery. It cranks like it want to start but doesn’t,
Lorraine Shobajo yeah I think so just take a good look should be same if the set up is same
Starter motor? Is the solenoid connected to the starter motor or are rhey in different spots on this car. Im confused
MixeTube it’s connected to the motor
Jus remove the oil filter and manifold shield that all room u need
Don’t think so
@@RBTheMechanicnaw it is I did one few months ago jus did one yesterday idk how I came up wit the idea but I surely didn’t want to take off all that underneath but once I removed those 2 parts it came out within 30-45 min JUS PASSING INFO ON 🥂🧰🛠️
You are the fucking man thank you buddy this is the easy way
Hood sensor
How the f do you take the heat shield off the CC with all the thick ass wires in your way
Lol gonna fish it out
@@RBTheMechanicany reason the knock sensor won’t come out ? I got the 13m bolt out, maybe tap on it?
Confusing and a waste of time. I'll find another video
Sorry
It was helpful for me
@@adammosley512 glad it worked out for you.... spending half the video on screw size is ridiculous ..but continue
@@CrummieBeatslive that's honestly a valid point so I understand where you coming from. Hopefully the next videos will be better and he'll look at the critique and improve in the future
The video was straight forward
I don’t know why but there are 15 videos saying to do it this way and only 1 (the TRQ video) shows how to actually take it out from the bottom by removing the front motor mount and motor mount bracket you - don’t have to mess with the catalytic converter or exhaust manifold - 1000% easier better with no chance of breaking bolts….. please don’t do it this way!
Motor mount wount help u catalytic is the only thing on the way just go down and check urself
@@RBTheMechanic Agreed. Removing mounts would be useless with how the starter is tucked in there. Besides, removing the cat took me less than 5 minutes (literally), so I don't know what the problem is. The only difficult part of this job is getting the starter out after removing the bolts. However, removing the wire connector that goes to the knock sensor, directly behind the starter, gives you the room you need to pull the starter out without a problem. Figuring that out took me more time than anything else.
Which video? Trq?
Acadia no good
Nopeeee!! I agree 100%
im a female trying to do this myself 😂
If u got the tools it can be done this is one of the most complicated starter I have done
Shit, i just did it on my 2012 traverse. Had to use my legs to push on the rachet to remove the bolts on the exaust because my arms weren't strong enough but other than that... It was definitely a pain in the ass. Hardest starter ive ever encountered to change. Terrible design. Men.... 🙄
U can do it
