This short video shows the ‘Rocking Stone’ or ‘Justice Stone’ that is located on the north-eastern shore of the Sacred Isle of Iona.
‘Rocking Stones’ are associated with Druids. Ancient Druids were the justices and magistrates of their communities. Both men and women of the priestly class of Druids were the scholars, spiritual leaders, and cultural influencers of their time. They were respected and trusted for their vast knowledge (19-20 years of study to be a Druid), as well as their attunement to, and capability with all of Nature and the Cosmos. A female Druid was called a Bandrui (Ban=woman; Drui=Druid).
It is believed that the Druids used a ‘Rocking Stone’ as one of their many divination tools to assist them in determining the innocence or guilt of someone who was being charged with an offence.
The use of specific stones for important officiating purposes was/is a practice of Druids. A more well-known example of that is the famous stone called the ‘Stone of Destiny’ that has ancient links to Iona.
The ‘Stone of Destiny’, or ‘Stone of Scone’ is also called ‘Lia Fáil’, in Gaelic, the ‘Speaking Stone’, and the ‘Stone of Tara’. It is an especially sacred relic. Its ancient origins are still a mystery, but there is no doubt that it has had a very extraordinarily unique purpose and destiny.
The Stone of Scone was used for thousands of years as an important part of inauguration and coronation events that bestowed kingship and queenship, first in Ireland, then Scotland, then England. St. Columba ordained Aiden as King of Dalriada on Iona in 574 CE using the ‘Stone of Destiny’. The stone is used to this day as part of the Coronation ceremony of kings and queens in Westminister Abbey.
A Druid ‘Rocking Stone’ is another example of Druidic practices that incorporated special stones. A 'Rocking Stone' or 'Justice Stone' such as the one on Iona, Scotland, is apparently so finely balanced that only a very small amount of force such as a delicate touch by a finger can cause it to rock. Yet, it is otherwise immoveable by human forceful pushing. It is fascinating to consider how the Druids might have used this tool.
