Several years ago, my husband and I came across a neglected 404 at a local yard sale for $50 and brought it home without knowing anything about it. A lot of learning and a little love later and it has happily powered through anything we have thrown at it. I absolutely adore our 404.
God bless you young lady. My mom passed away in 2022 and I inherited her 404 (I learned to sew on this machine in the very early 70’s) in her last years of life she suffered from dementia and I believe she tried to take it apart. So I am going to restore her to her former glory. I have no experience with this but I spent 22 1/2 yrs in the Navy, three wars, and three ex husbands. I think I can do it. You are so knowledgeable! I will be watching and reading everything you do. God bless you.
Hi there. I hope you found your way to AndyTube’s videos here on RUclips about taking apart and repairing a 404. I recently found one and found these videos INCREDIBLY helpful.
Same girl same. Navy, one ex husband though. Refused to marry again. Just not worth it. I would like to see some work you do!
Congratulations on your new machine! It sounds wonderful and makes a beautiful stitch.
Thanks
I inherited a slant 404 desk model from my grandparents. used it to make masks at the beginning of covid... then did a bunch of research on it and fell in love. im a 34 year old mechanic and this thing is just an absolute gem. "THEY DONT MAKE EM LIKE THEY USED TO" lol
Awesome. It's a really nice machine.
Thanks for the video, Thimble !! This model is my daily user,,,,and I use it ALOT,,,,everyday !!! I have 38 vintage machines. I would never, EVER trade or sell my 404. I consider it the best Singer ever. She is a beast !! People ask me what color this is. I always just say 'morgue-flesh.' I have. 301 and a couple 201s and some great 15-91s, several 99s, some 66s and a factory new 128 from 1940 and many others. But THIS is my #1 girl.
You have great taste. Thanks for watching.
Loved your video on the 404. I was lucky enough to have one gifted to me. After a bit of tuning, she runs just as strong as ever. And, I do think it has a special beauty, like a 1958 Chevy!
❤❤ This comment touched me so much!
@@chasitylyson1617 awww, thanks! I just sewed on my 404 the other day and, just for fun, kept doubling over the fabric to see how strong she was - 16 layers of cotton with absolutely no problem!
@@bsugarman1 wow!! That is truly amazing!!
Thank you for this because it is very helpful
I LOVE THIS VIDEO lol! Young African Canadian Male. Found this exact model in MINT condition @ a thrift store yesterday for 60$. I couldn't be HAPPIER with my purchase. Your explanation of the motor was spot on for me. Learned some really good information, Thank you!
Wow. You got a great find. Congrats and thanks for watching.
You are absolutely brilliant. Very knowledgeable about sew machines.
OMG!!! I love you so much!!! I have this machine and acquired it after my Grandma passed. I have used this machine all my life. I wanted to make sure it was in good order before I started using it as it hasn’t been used in awhile. I will clean it. But I have been looking for spool pins as I think they have been lost in moving. I think I found some hopefully. But, it you have other videos on this machine, I will definitely watch. I had a hard time finding the model it was to replace the spools. Thanks you so much!!! Much appreciated. My 20 year old daughter will be getting this in the future as she is a seamstress.
Awesome. You have a nice machine.
Thanks. I had one for years and gave it to my daughter when she started to need her own.
Our school used Singer 404 in home ec classes. The teacher said they were easy to operate and held up well to abuse from beginning sewists. She also stated the machines were simple to maintain and she could do many repairs herself.
Very true. Mine has held up to all my outrageous experiments sewing plastic. Its still sewing without a problem. But, I already know this couldn't be done on my new machines. Thanks for watching.
Great demonstration on your 404, stitch looks great and she sounds strong. I’m thinking that the 404’s were the machines we had in Home Economics back in the 70’s, it may have been the 301, but good luck with your 404.
The brass bushing on the bottom of the motor after many decades does dry out and you usually do not notice it until it gets bad and noisy. You can put a little bit of NOS singer motor lubricant on the shaft before reassembly just to be sure. The ball bearing on the top is usually fine but it too can dry out.
Great tip. Thanks!
I have one I am now cleaning on
Since you are cleaning out your stock, let me know if you have a Singer 201 to sell. I just love them :-)
Anyone know where I can get the top spool? I have bought a few and they either fall through or don’t fit in the hole ! 😢
I have links to the spool pin along with other needed parts for this machine on my website. thimblebook.com/2024/02/18/singer-404-review/
is the 404 supposed to be loud when sewing
All of them have the same humming sound. I actually find it relaxing 🙂
