As a child, this was one of the movies I absolutely loved and for all the wrong reasons, I would only pay attention to the waterfall scene and anytime Jack was on camera. I had pretty crap taste as a child, none of the movies I watched had any real quality.
I had watched this movie on vhs (rented from the video store) when I was a teenager to watch with my baby brother. I'd forgotten how immaturaly adult the humor was and bought it used a few months ago. I started to watch it with the 6 year old I babysit and was horrified at all the thing I'd forgotten being in the movie and relieved when she decided she didn't want to watch the Kangaroo movie anymore. Woops LOL
@@HemmasStudios_ Have you heard how Pretty Woman was shot as a hard edged adult romance called 3000 Dollars? Then at some point they molded into the film it became. There are still traces of the original present. Julia Roberts' character is often being told off for fidgeting by Richard Gere. That's because, as shot, she was suffering from Withdrawal Symptoms after Gere paid her to not take Class A drugs for a week. The scene in which Gere bursts in on her in the bathroom because he thinks she's taking drugs, was true as shot. But was redone to have it be that she isn't, and instead it's a turning point as he realises she's not the stereotype he assumes.
@@davidjames579 I wonder how many films were completely different in development. I know there's cases like Star Wars, where the ideas behind the backstories of characters were really rough until the second one, but I'm really interested in cases where an entire film's ideas shifted during development.
@@stanleysmooth Yeah me as well. What's even more interesting is when films are changed after shooting, to appeal to a different or wider audience, or just the tone of the film is changed. We've had well known recent examples such as Justice League, Suicide Squad and Fant4Stic. And interestingly A New Hope was first edited in a completely different way, making it slower paced and more fly-on-the-wall documentary like, that sucked all the adventure out of it. But aside from Pretty Woman, Kangaroo Jack and Superman 2 I'm not sure of too many others that went to these lengths. It's rumored that most of Eric Stoltz's Back To The Future was shot and with a different tone to Fox's. And Woody Allen's film September was shot twice entirely with different casts. Although in this case, not because of studio interference, but because Allen himself was dissatisfied with the first version.
I feel like this movie would've been a lot better if they had removed all of the mafia plotlines, had it in more of in line of the 2020 Sonic movie, and if you want to retain the talking kangaroo aspect cut the live action route and go full on animated. There's a reason why some things work much in a animated environment than a live action one.
Saying that anything would have been better if it was more like that awful garbage Sonic movie, is blasphemy. Absolutely NO DOUBT this movie should have stayed the adult comedy it was supposed to be. Who cares if it made money or not, at least the movie would have kept it's integrity and dignity. Something Hollywood knows so little about.
It would be like if they took the hangover, cut out every single R-rated moment. Edit in some fart jokes and made the tiger a cgi character that talks.
Wait the dogs from Snow Dogs didn't actually talk!? Man I remember seeing that trailer on my Oliver & Company DVD (I think), and to think it was all false advertisement. Also I was born in 2004, and I'm pretty sure I still remember Cartoon Network still airing trailers for Kangaroo Jack. Unless it was for the DVDs or they were actually premiering it. I think I remember watching Men in Black on Cartoon Network.
They made an animated sequel which was better reviewed than this one. The kangaroo 🦘 was upgraded to main character. The reason the sequel was made was a way of addressing a criticism the first movie got that the kangaroo was barely in it
Down and Under was written by Scott Rosenberg who, if you read screenplays in the 1990s, was one of the best screenwriters. His scripts were meant to be read like Shane Black before him. His "Ten" and "A Leonard Cohen Afterword" (made into the awful film Highway) were two of my favorites. I liked "Con Air" as a script, not a movie. I loved Beautiful Girls (his only script not to be destroyed in filming). Sadly, though, Down & Under was one of his scripts that I wanted badly to read, but could never get my hands on a first draft of. One day, I will. As for Kangaroo Jack, I know Steve Bing came in later and did rewrites. I don't think he wrote it with Rosenberg.
Looks like that day will be today as the script was uploaded online back in April. It’s dated 7/2/98 and attributed to both Rosenberg and Bing. drive.google.com/file/d/1z8-5KMpGbE3oQmsT6bSJ6Hzi8KPRvAvc/view
I watched this at the end of 2020 because it was on Netflix. I read some bad reviews but didn’t think it could be THAT bad. I mean, I watched Coyote Ugly in 2017 and kinda liked it. But that was a time when I didn’t know what made something good or bad, and I needed a dose of nostalgia to get me through a depressive episode. The critics were right on both movies. CU was bad too, but less so than KJ. I’m glad I’ve matured since I was 17.
I still think it's unfair for a studio to completely destroy a director's true vision of a movie, and not go with their gut. Because an R-Rated movie like the way they planned sounded way interesting.
Do you know how pissed I was as a kid waiting for the Kanagroo to finally reveal it was able to talk to realize I'd wasted my time with this movie. Didn't matter anything else at that point cause I'd be conned
I doubt the raunchy cut would be good honestly. Sounds like it just be like “lol look at how inappropriate we are!!! Don’t you find it funny!!!!!” But I probably watch it just out of curiosity honestly. That’s just my opinion

the waterfall scene? 😮
The waterfall scene was the first thing to come to mind 😂
So this movie wasn't a fever dream, I remembered this, well barely, but still remembered this but forgot about everything about the movie, so yeah
Same here. I watched one night with my brother when we were kids and I think it kinda stuck with me, somehow

Chicken blood, chicken blood, CHICKEN BLOOD!
They should really release the original version on HBO Max
This, please. I really hope the Snyder Cut paves the way for a ton of alternate cuts of movies making their way to streaming!

What about the live action Scooby-Doo movie?
YES as a person born in 1994 I Appreciate this!!
I would definitely want to see the original version
Someone uploaded the opening of Down & Under (the early test screening for Kangaroo Jack) from a 2003 TRB DVD.
I'd really love to see this version...

As from someone that enjoys kangaroo jack as a guilty pleasure. I would definitely be curious in seeing the original r rated cut of down & under.

Mickey Mouse: Snow Dogs
Bugs Bunny: Kangaroo Jack
I wonder what happened to the director? I know this killed his career. But literally you can google him and you can’t find any info at all.
Please talk about the CW's live-action reimagining of the Cartoon Network series, "The Powerpuff Girls", entitled "Powerpuff", that almost happened!
That script is a healthy heaping of *yikes*
Is there a way to find the Down and Under cut shown at the original test screening?
I loved this movie a lot when I was little, but it’s so dumb. And it’s pretty funny.

Had they not retooled it, the film definitely would’ve flopped and be forgotten.
The Kangaroo is downright creepy, the voice doesn't fit. It should never have spoken.
At least they got an AUSTRALIAN to do the voice.
