If you can get any of the house’s floor plans/schematics before you close/occupy in January, it will give you a head start on planning plumbing, electrical, and engineering. Don’t know how it works in Scotland, but in the states a lot of the documents are held in the towns record hall.

This reminded me of a major misunderstanding/mistake my first husband and I made when remodeling an old house. We’re both tall so we wanted the kitchen counters to be a bit higher than normal. We told the contractor but neither of the parties involved realized the new floor covering needed a new subfloor. This was so long ago the details are fuzzy. Sadly the countertops ended up being shorter than normal because of the built up floor. Work with professionals!

Nice cabin! When you reno your new house, consider the under floor heating. Scotland would make that a VERY good idea. I think that, at the back of your house, you might think about a mud room/toilet. Put the washer, dryer, folding table, cupboards for outdoor wear, and storage for towels, sheets, etc. Attach a 1/2 bath/toilet to the mudroom for convenience between the indoors/outdoors. Put the back door out the mudroom to make exiting easy.
As a Canadian, can confirm that maple syrup is good on everything. Brussel sprouts. Sweet potatoes. Breakfast sausages. Bacon. Pancakes. Waffles. Everything!
Get a smallish dog and you can travel with him or her! Do remember, though, that the smaller the dog, the longer its life expectancy. Mine fits in a carrier under the airline seat in front of me (for a hefty price) but since you live in the UK, you might have trouble getting it back into the country. Also, what if your parents get too old to come and look after the puppy? Maybe adopt an older dog (maybe 5-6).

The best advice that we got when we moved into our 120yr old house was "live in it at least for a year before you start ANY renovations/restorations". Your plans/needs/dreams will change. Get to know the house. Third year here and it was the best advice ever :) We got a labrador puppy three months after we moved in. That was not the plan, but she is the best thing ever. retired real estate appraiser here/27yr; I appraised/inspected 7000+ homes...and this log cabin is one of my all time faves! WOW! Absolutely love it. Re: your own spread; fabulous! Tons of potential, good bones. When I did my own builds, I "stole" design ideas/features from all the homes I had done....and this log cabin is full of cool features worth considering for your own home. I just recently (4 months ago) started watching your channel and I couldn’t love you guys more than I do after watching this episode. As an animal lover and previous rescue volunteer I cried when you all talked about adopting two fur babies. I haven’t had a chance to go back and start watching from the beginning yet, (we just bought a house and made a big move too!) Now I want to go back and find the Barcelona episode! I have installed many electric underfloor heating systems, although I would definitely go for a piped system. However, Nick gave some great advice regarding getting the order of work right first. Make sure that you have a thermal break/insulation below your heated floor so that heat rises and doesn’t try to heat up the planet under your property. Draw out how you think you want the layout of each room so that you can work out where you need sockets and which side of the door opening for switches (latch side not hinge side). Such an exciting time, I need to take a tour of Scotland on the motorbike so may see you around the cairngorms 😂
@@kingingit no worries, I have worked in construction, electrical specifically for 40 years, so I have picked up a lot of multi trade knowledge over the years, therefore if you want some advise on anything I can send you my email address. If I am not sure of something I will say so. But definitely plan plan plan, try to find fault with your plan before finalising it. Oh and get a couple of dogs, you can get them passports too 😉

Having just gone through some renovations last year I will say this… it’s definitely very stressful and sometimes completely maddening, but absolutely worth it, so take it one day at a time and remind yourselves you love each other 😂
I am super excited for you both. So glad you're finally able to get some dogs. Just a tip select a breed that will be able to keep up with your lifestyle. I love our Parson Russell terrier, she is a snuggle bunny, but also energetic for those long walks and exploring, super smart she takes well to learning things. She learned so fast. She really completes us. I could see in your vlogs with the dogs you both will be great with them.
You don’t need to go to Morocco! 😂 Sometimes dog rescues happen when you least expect. We were on the Norfolk Broads September last year and we rescued a dog from a river bank just outside Norwich. He was really thin, poor lad, and we think he must have fallen or have been pushed off a boat. Norfolk dog rescue took him in, but as no one claimed him we asked if we could adopt him. He’s such a lovely natured dog, and his collie adopted sister now has a big brother to play with and boss (she barks at him if he does things she isn’t allowed to do). He’s massive (husky/GSD cross), but so gentle.
Those boards while being likely the right size might give you guys some issues as beginners. Older boards tend to be quite stiff making them hard to turn and not forgiving. A newer board that has a soft flex will make a massive difference when just starting out. I know it’s expensive to get started and those boards will work. Just don’t get discouraged on the sport if you’re having a really hard time on them. I worked in a shop for a few years and would be happy to share some advice if you’d like. when the time comes that you want to upgrade.
Nah you'll be hooked, snowboarding grabs you and doesn't let go no matter how good or bad you are. I've never surfed but I imagine it's that same magic feeling as catching a good wave.
I just cried the whole segment when you both talked about the dogs. I have two dogs from rumania and they are getting older (12&11) and they are just the best thing in my life (don't tell my husband)
That log cabin is stunning! I fell in love with Scotland doing the NC500 last year and this has made me really want to head back and explore the Cairngorms..especially now I know you can snowboard there!

Scotland's 'right to roam' rules should be adopted by Wales and the rest of the U.K. You lucky, lucky people. It's a dream home, beats the Rhondda Valleys by a country mile. It gets bloody freezing there in Winter so heating costs are better spent on masses of insulation. You lucky, lucky people. It couldn't have happened to a nicer couple.

But I will tell you that my husband and I got a dog right after we got a home before it was finished and we wished we would have waited until we were done with the home and more settled because the dog needed a lot of attention when you first get them they seem to be very needy for attention like that.

The best advice that we got when we moved into our 120yr old house was "live in it at least for a year before you start ANY renovations/restorations". Your plans/needs/dreams will change. Get to know the house. Third year here and it was the best advice ever :) We got a labrador puppy three months after we moved in. That was not the plan, but she is the best thing ever. Good luck with your house, it looks lovely!

retired real estate appraiser here/27yr; I appraised/inspected 7000+ homes...and this log cabin is one of my all time faves! WOW! Absolutely love it. Re: your own spread; fabulous! Tons of potential, good bones. When I did my own builds, I "stole" design ideas/features from all the homes I had done....and this log cabin is full of cool features worth considering for your own home. CONGRATS on the home....and the projects ahead.

I just recently (4 months ago) started watching your channel and I couldn’t love you guys more than I do after watching this episode. As an animal lover and previous rescue volunteer I cried when you all talked about adopting two fur babies. I haven’t had a chance to go back and start watching from the beginning yet, (we just bought a house and made a big move too!) Now I want to go back and find the Barcelona episode! I have installed many electric underfloor heating systems, although I would definitely go for a piped system.
However, Nick gave some great advice regarding getting the order of work right first.
Make sure that you have a thermal break/insulation below your heated floor so that heat rises and doesn’t try to heat up the planet under your property.
Draw out how you think you want the layout of each room so that you can work out where you need sockets and which side of the door opening for switches (latch side not hinge side).
Such an exciting time, I need to take a tour of Scotland on the motorbike so may see you around the cairngorms 😂

@@kingingit no worries, I have worked in construction, electrical specifically for 40 years, so I have picked up a lot of multi trade knowledge over the years, therefore if you want some advise on anything I can send you my email address. If I am not sure of something I will say so.
But definitely plan plan plan, try to find fault with your plan before finalising it.
Oh and get a couple of dogs, you can get them passports too 😉

Having just gone through some renovations last year I will say this… it’s definitely very stressful and sometimes completely maddening, but absolutely worth it, so take it one day at a time and remind yourselves you love each other 😂

I am super excited for you both. So glad you're finally able to get some dogs. Just a tip select a breed that will be able to keep up with your lifestyle. I love our Parson Russell terrier, she is a snuggle bunny, but also energetic for those long walks and exploring, super smart she takes well to learning things. She learned so fast. She really completes us. I could see in your vlogs with the dogs you both will be great with them.

You don’t need to go to Morocco! 😂 Sometimes dog rescues happen when you least expect. We were on the Norfolk Broads September last year and we rescued a dog from a river bank just outside Norwich. He was really thin, poor lad, and we think he must have fallen or have been pushed off a boat. Norfolk dog rescue took him in, but as no one claimed him we asked if we could adopt him. He’s such a lovely natured dog, and his collie adopted sister now has a big brother to play with and boss (she barks at him if he does things she isn’t allowed to do). He’s massive (husky/GSD cross), but so gentle.
Those boards while being likely the right size might give you guys some issues as beginners. Older boards tend to be quite stiff making them hard to turn and not forgiving. A newer board that has a soft flex will make a massive difference when just starting out. I know it’s expensive to get started and those boards will work. Just don’t get discouraged on the sport if you’re having a really hard time on them.
I worked in a shop for a few years and would be happy to share some advice if you’d like. when the time comes that you want to upgrade.

That log cabin is stunning! I fell in love with Scotland doing the NC500 last year and this has made me really want to head back and explore the Cairngorms..especially now I know you can snowboard there!

I would imagine the cost of you going there, considering everything, would probably equate to feeding many dog/cat shelters for a while. It's a dream home, beats the Rhondda Valleys by a country mile. It gets bloody freezing there in Winter so

Love you guys and I'm so happy for you getting your new home. But I will tell you that my husband and I got a dog right after we got a home before it was finished and we wished we would have waited until we were done with the home and more settled because the dog needed a lot of attention when you first get them they seem to be very needy for attention like that.
