  • I have 4 sets of vintage speakers. All use 8 inch speakers. They are as follows.
    1: Full-range ported boxes with Jensen drivers. They were made by Allied Radio Corp. under the brand name Lincoln. Date unknown, but found the Lincoln brand in a few early ‘60s allied catalogs.
    2: KLH model 32 2-way acoustic suspension boxes, mfg 1972.
    3: Sony SS-510 2-way boxes, mfg 1973 or ‘74.
    4: Realistic Nova-5 2-way ported boxes, released 1982, exact dates unknown but serial numbers completely different. Refoamed 2019.

    Good.choice. I too was leaning towards the klh. I thought they handed all genres quite well.

    My favorite combination is the Sony SS-G5 bookshelf speakers wired to a Sony STR-DE305 (of course the STR-10GXES is the best one, but it costs a lot) with the treble almost at max. Those speakers have such nice loudness and beat to them, that it almost sounds like the modern speakers like the KLH, but of course the old speakers have a warm sound to them (even the SS-G5 slightly) while modern ones don't and have higher frequencies.

    the vintage stuff is quite special! I have a few sets but my favorite pair I've heard so far are my Yamaha NS - 344's

      Those look nice, and I’m surprised they sound really good when the smaller NS-10 is widely regarded as being hard to listen to. Those old KLH 32s are my best vintage speakers by far in terms of sound, but I really wish I had the beautiful front grills, and no water damage on the back corners of the boxes. I’ve seen a pristine pair of 32s, seemingly almost never used or well taken care of, at a vintage stereo store in my city, but I passed on those, only because I already had a pair. That was my biggest regret related to speakers. Those “Lincoln” boxes contain the old 8 inch drivers you commented on in my “Trash can is a speaker box” video: old Jensen special design 8” drivers! I actually think they would work well as fairly low wattage guitar cabs, possibly tapped off the speaker cables in my small open-back practice amp! They have everything they need: insanely efficient and the guitar really “pops out.”
      Oh, and those Sonys, suprisingly, hit far lower in an open baffle than their box! The box is pretty but built so lightly that it actually rattles when you turn the bass up, and the driver, despite claiming 6 watts, can easily hit 40hz in free air, though it only has about 1/4 inch max excursion. It reminds me of some of the better stock car speakers.

      Also, Realistic’s Nova range of products is at least a bit famous in shows and movies. Most recently, Nova-45 Headphones were featured in season 4 of Stranger Things, (these things are real interesting, possibly the smallest open-backs I’ve seen!) but I’ve also seen Nova-10 speakers in a movie! There are probably countless other examples I’m forgetting. I guess the Jukebox and note blocks in the video game Minecraft also sort of resemble the Nova series speakers to me!

    Realistic got a bad rap back in the day as being cheesy and low-fi. I recall the Optimus series, the T-70 in particular, as being favorably reviewed. It had an 8" woofer and 1" tweeter in a labyrinth enclosure. I did hear that speaker driven by a Kenwood amp and it sounded swell. The Minimus 7 and 11 speakers were very well received too. My first "component" hifi system after military service (and broke) in 1975 was a budget system consisting of a Pioneer SX-434 receiver, BIC-920 turntable and KLH model 31 speakers. Where these speaker systems fall short is with classical music as they lack the foundation and wide dispersion to be fully satisfying. But they weren't really designed for that. Thanks for the video. Ray Davies sang... cheap is small and not too steep. But best of all, cheap is cheap.

      Funnily enough, your KLH model Thirty-Ones had the exact same type of woofer as my Thirty-Twos. The tweeters were different on the thirty-ones, the main difference being that the thirty-ones used a ferrite magnet, and the 32s had the alnico slug type magnet. All the woofers had a square ferrite magnet. Also, the thirty-twos used a fiberglass dampening over the tweeter (replaced with polyurethane batting on mine) rather than a resistor like the thirty-one.
      On the topic of Realistic, their Optimus and Nova series speakers from the late 60s well into the 70s were mostly the same speakers with a different finish, and they were incredible speakers! There are even reports that the drivers in Nova 7/Optimus 1 and also the Nova 8/Optimus 5 models, only the early ones without the B in the model number, some of the earliest speakers from each series, had custom drivers made by none other than… KLH!!!

      @@djijspeakerguy4628- yeah, not knowing much about hifi in 1975, I thought KLH would get my moneys worth in budget speakers. Friends accused my 31's of sounding dull. I never cared for the forward midrange of the JBL, Cerwin or Altec speakers. Forget the Japanese stuff. Of course the EPI-100 was the crème de la crème in budget (low cost) loudspeakers. Best balanced, good dispersion, could handle lots of power and had reasonable bass to 45Hz (+/-3dB). I finally got a pair in 1980. You know your stuff my friend.

    Do u have to turn on it’s not for kids for u to see comments? Just a q ques

    • @djijspeakerguy4628
      @djijspeakerguy4628  Год назад

      Yes. Any video that is marked as “for kids” will have no comment section. There’s some law now that prevents RUclips from allowing this, (the same reason why the “for kids” toggle was added,) but it is not very good for creators whose content is fun for kids and adults. Unfortunately, there are some controversial parts to this law, and any videos with minors in them now get their comments disabled as well. I have some videos in my channel before my voice dropped, and some of those have the comments permanently disabled and deleted!

      Coil rub by the sound of it

    • @djijspeakerguy4628
      @djijspeakerguy4628  Год назад

      This likely means that when you glued the new gasket on, the cone was off center, meaning an internal coil of wire is likely scraping against the side of a gap in the magnet. The gasket needs to be replaced again, while making sure the cone moves smoothly without a rubbing feeling when moved from the center. If you can’t get the cone to move freely, it might mean the coil is damaged, either dented from bottoming out, or unwinding from overheating if it was ever overpowered, and it might not be fixable.
