Testing subwoofer placement (Where in a room will a subwoofer produce the most bass?)
Note before watching: headphones are required to hear the subwoofers. Don’t watch on your tiny phone speaker and complain that you can’t hear them.
A while ago, I got a comment on a video that suggested I place a subwoofer on the ground, and that I would get better results with deeper bass, and possibly less port noise. I have wanted to try and place my subwoofers in different places to see how they would sound.
I tested two subwoofers. One is a Klipsch downfiring 12 inch sub, and the other is a Paradigm front firing 10 inch sub.
I tested both subs on the ground, in the center and in the corner of the room. I also tested them elevated, on the same surface as my L/R speakers.

Single driver (1 way) speakers? Sound test and comparison
Просмотров 1109 месяцев назад
Maybe you’ve heard of 2 way speakers, with a woofer/midrange driver and a tweeter? Maybe you’ve also heard of 3 way speakers that separated the woofer and the midrange driver? Maybe, you’ve even heard of the designers in the 70s, prominently in Japan, who tried 4 or even up to 7 way speakers? But, how about speakers with only one driver? Just one? Yes, they exist, and they are more common than ...
Sound reflector: easily bend sound waves to the side!

Similar lenses, which change the direction of sound, are used in many products, such as reflex horns (like megaphones) or other products such as certain 360 degree portable speakers. This particular version bounces sound 90 degrees to one side with minimal change to the audio quality, and is useful if one needs to mount a speaker on the side of a surface. I used these reflectors in a current po...
Testing my oldest speaker! (Early 60s)

This speaker is out of an early 60s (1961 is my best guess) Symphonic briefcase style record player. It was powered by a single 25L6 vacuum tube, which probably had an output of about 2 watts. This driver was optimized to have a lot of volume on very low power levels. Other than that, it’s nothing special, but holds up well today considering everything.

Date unknown, but found the Lincoln brand in a few early ‘60s allied catalogs. 2: KLH model 32 2-way acoustic suspension boxes, mfg 1972. 3: Sony SS-510 2-way boxes, mfg 1973 or ‘74. 4: Realistic Nova-...

This 5 foot (1.52m) long cardboard box with an open end actually makes super deep bass with fairly small 4 inch drivers. One downside I found was that tone controls were needed to get the woofer as loud as the tweeter. However, it got closer than expected to my home theater sub, a 12” Dayton driver in a Klipsch box. Putting my phone near the open end of the box clips my mic: something that I co...
Improving budget speakers without changing the drivers. (Yes, it is possible.)

I improve the sound of one of my cheap Yamaha HTIB front surrounds without swapping drivers out. Changes include a crossover instead of a bass blocker, poly stuffing, and sealing off the bass ports, which were not tuned well. I then compare it with an identical unmodified speaker. The changes to the speaker were temporary because the crossover and stuffing were from a higher quality speaker I w...
Even better homemade Bluetooth speaker!
Просмотров 2053 года назад
This is what came after my previous homemade Bluetooth speaker, and my speakers that I made out of old soda cans. Since both projects were a big success, I decided to merge them together. Not expecting much, I tested it and it actually competes with some brand name speakers in terms of sound quality. Sure it isn’t water resistant, or quite as loud, but it still can be heard across our back yard!

You sound like a tard!
Please, which frequency was the low-frequency on the end of this video? It was pretty low frequency, I am suprised, that these speakers can play it. Was it 30Hz or even lower?
It was probably much lower. And they were not really playing it: pretty much any speaker can move in and out like that to an extent: the actual low frequency they’re putting out would be negligible to none at all due to the small area of the cone. Think of it like how a tweeter doesn’t have to move to produce treble. The lower you go, the more a speaker has to move in and out to produce the note. Those were basically doing nothing at that frequency.
@@djijspeakerguy4628 I know all about of you wrote. But you are not right, that they doesnt "played" this frequency. They played it, because if it woukd be under their lowest freyuency they can play, they didnt move (their membranes). I think too, it was lower frequency like 30Hz, but that small speakers usually can not play that low freauency.
That editing was insane
Yeah IMovie is pretty capable nowadays if you know what you’re doing. I just had a clip with the wood subwoofer missing and one with it there, and you can easily transition between the two clips. Also able to do little things like split the video clip and delete little sections, usually ones with easily removable Umms/Ahhs, unnecessary words, and clips for the blooper reel at the end. I could’ve easily adjusted the volume on the test clips up or my voice down, but for some reason it sounded good to me at the time. But yeah the test clips are really soft, sorry.
Does anyone knows what’s the name of the wire I need to connect my paradigm reference subwoofer
@@michaelreyes6761 What is the exact model of the subwoofer? Most of the reference subwoofers look to only be compatible with home theater receivers, the type you’d use for a surround sound setup. They don’t have a “speaker level” input, such that you could connect them with normal copper speaker wire. The cable that needs to be used is called a subwoofer cable: it’s essentially an RCA cable, but only one cable instead of 2 or 3 connected together. If the subwoofer has 2 RCA ports next to each other, (some do, some don’t), you plug this cable into the port labeled “LFE,” which is usually the right/red port on most Paradigm subs I’m seeing online. To my knowledge, these subs can’t be plugged into a receiver or amplifier device that doesn’t have a designated “subwoofer out,” “subwoofer pre-out,” or “Low Frequency Effects (LFE) out,” port on that device. There is an adaptor (SVS SoundPath speaker level subwoofer adaptor) available out there, because many new subwoofers are unfortunately missing the speaker level input feature. The only problem: it costs 80 dollars just for the adaptor, and it’s the only product of its kind I could find for home audio use.

That Glue only lasts about 3-4 years at best. What if I have some DCM KX12's and 1 speaker has intermittent crackling from the 6" mid-range in the speaker. The 12" sub and 3.5" tweeter work fine. What is the best way to fix this issue? Or should I just get a B&W, Rockford Fosgate or JBL 4" replacement speaker and swap it?
The Bose Soundlink Flex sounded probably the second best. Which is amazing given its size.
@@mcgreedy01 I agree, those Bluetooth speakers tend to sound good for their size. It has to do with the fact that they are self powered speakers, with a battery and amplifier inside, and circuitry designed to push the best possible sound out of the driver they have. They actually boost the bass quite significantly at lower volume levels. It wouldn’t sound nearly as good at max volume.
thanks for this!
I still have original Nova 6's.
Paradigm 🏆
I have these exact same speakers and have this issue. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction to fix the problem.
Lol this is the stuff I had wanted to do in 2014-2017 if my parents would let me
Nice that there’s still an audience for my old videos from when I was 12. My parents would sometimes take me on trips to the thrift store and gave me their old electronics. Also this was a nostalgic point of my life. Lots of other stuff was going right for me, and even the music on the radio takes me back!! I feel like my overall video quality has improved greatly, but looking back this is still impressive for a 12 year old with a new channel.
@@djijspeakerguy4628 I'm actually someone that came across your videos a couple years ago. I miss those stations, although the one I had when I was 12 is still around.. well it went down for a bit.. Mix 106.5. There's just something simply awesome about watching a video of someone just blast radio music through tweeters n stuff. Just tickles me. I also wanted to say thank you very much, it is very helpful for me to fix my speaker which was separated, and just one thing which I want to add tips is, if it is too hard to fix the hooks by hands, use the bolt and washer and nut to fix the box upper side and hooks. then you can push the upper side of box to push the hook to lower box.😉
My friend just gave me one same problem happen, good to see your video so I have a idea to replace a new speaker in .

an easier way to fix the stuck rear button is just to spray it with a silicon lubrificant (I used silicon shine from Muc-Off)

How do you mount the round style wall adapter that your speakers are attached to?
What are the other speakers that you have compared them to?
I have 1 which only works 3% if of the time, and then a 2nd that buzzes at certain frequencies or low volume. Mainly asking if anyone has any idea whats wrong with the 2nd
Really really great - just fixed my Boses speakers the way you suggested. Thanks, mate!!
Thank you very much!!!
Thanks for showing me how to take them apart. I soldered jumpers so that the speakers don't turn off when you connect headphones.
Do you know if you can hook 2 cubes to the front if you wire in series? Specs say amp is 8 ohm. Series would make it 16ohm.
This is probably not going to improve your system, if that’s what you think. A cube is either 3 or 4 ohms if I recall correctly. Bose wants you to only use their cubes with an acoustimass module, hence the strange impedance rating. I’m pretty sure the cubes with an acoustimass module probably measures 8 ohms per channel as it is. Hooking up 2 cubes in series will not have an effect on volume, because even though you’re putting more drivers in the system, you’re giving each one less power. Hooking 2 cubes up in parallel will double the volume, but cut the ohm rating in half: not good for the system.
@@djijspeakerguy4628 Could you add a 4ohm resistor in each line and increase the resistance to make 8ohms?
@@carfix2000ca That’s definitely possible, but I tried it once and the resistor got quite hot. From what you are trying to do here, I’m now assuming you’re dealing with a recalled acoustimass module that can’t be used If so, most other speakers are going to be far easier to work with than the proprietary Bose ones.
@@djijspeakerguy4628 Everything works. I just want to hook ceiling speakers to my receiver and thought it might be possible to use 2 cubes at the front. Could hook my bring 8 ohm and the acousrimass rear cube feeds to the same output on the receiver? Receiver is 6 to 16 ohm
Ive had these speakers for over 15 years The stereo these came with had separate channels for the subwoofers that blocked out the high frequencies
Yeah, I’m assuming you’re talking about the Aiwa stereo speakers with the “built-in subwoofer” feature. The subwoofer drivers in those speakers are quite similar to these ones. Some even had a powered subwoofer amplifier on the back of them, as well as the normal passive speaker hookup for the midrange and high frequency drivers! My speakers were a more conventional design with this driver and a tweeter, and they only have one wire coming out the back.
@@djijspeakerguy4628 they are a pretty good speaker for the money The stereo had issues form day one but I still have speakers in my shop
Fantastic speaker!
They sound kinda decent for one way speakers!
I agree. One way speakers can be impressive or terrible depending on how they’re designed. Case in point, those Onkyos… surprisingly, none of these speakers have whizzer cones in the center! I’m currently listening to some well-designed 2 way speakers that I recently acquired. I’ll leave you surprised on the brand! (Clue: they competed directly with my Paradigm Titan V3 in the early 2000s, and might be slightly more well-known.)
Nice speakers you have there. I kind of like single driver speakers. I have several pairs myself.
Yeah, I commented on your Jensen speaker with the vented dust cap. The vintage boxes in this video are the ones with the similar drivers.
@@djijspeakerguy4628 are you talking about the ones in the beige colored cabinets. Those look interesting as well. Had a similar pair when I was younger but mine also had a horn in them but had an 8 inch driver
@@speakeradventures Yeah, those are the ones. Drivers in there resemble the one in your video, but have a thinner, wider magnet, smaller spider, and they lack the ribbed cone and whizzer, though they have the two piece vented dust cap much like your Jensen 8”.
@djijspeakerguy4628 the vented dust caps helps with cooling the voice coil..I bet since yours are in a cabinet your speakers would take prob about 10 to 20 watts. Do they have a rating on the back somewhere.
@@speakeradventures I don’t think so. I was assuming 15-ish watts based on similar designs, and it sounds like that’s probably about right. Being such a highly efficient speaker, you’d never guess it’s such a low wattage. These things go much louder than a modern day 10 or 15 watt driver would.
Same I used two deal with college but take your time bro keep up your hard hard work on college
Good.choice. I too was leaning towards the klh. I thought they handed all genres quite well.
Nice. Vintage speakers for sound good usually. I have a lot of them. Very cool video 📹.
I have these from about 12 years ago and still use them daily. Now connected to an ifi Zen Dac and they sound amazing (oh, also a mini subwoffer is added too).
You can tell clearly whats making what sound lol, and the logitech z623's are just not for music. Only get these if you are looking for some gaming speakers, or a soundbar replacement. These will blow away even a 400$ soundbar, but if you have that money get the z906's. Dont even get these if you are wanting musical speakers, they sound super nasty and muddy when listening to anything with vocals.
Honestly, Logi’s sub is a bit nicer to my ears, but klipsch is louder. I agree about the mid range on the Logitechs being a bit peaky. However, I also agree that many more expensive sound bars don’t come close to touching the Logitechs: they’re truly a steal for the price. We used the Logitechs as a temporary sound system for our TV while we renovated our basement, and they did the job well! I usually use various models of bookshelf speakers, sometimes accompanied by a subwoofer, for music. I say “sometimes” because not all subwoofers are great, with this Klipsch being an example of something that’s not great for its size.
Maybe the klipshe sounds different in person, but I do think with the right crossover it should blow the logitech right out of the water. I dont hate these speakers though, they are definitely awesome.@@djijspeakerguy4628
I also have the z906's, logitech definitely knows what they are doing👏@@djijspeakerguy4628
My logitech z2300 side speaker died and I didn't find other ones to replace them 8 ohm, so can I use z130 instead ?

Nice video. Another very simple trick to test with a 9v battery. Connect a short pair of wires to the main terminals. Hold the negative or black to the negative of the 9v. Then tap the positive to the red and you will hear a popping sound. While the covers are off you will see the speakers move. If you wired them correctly, they should both pop outward or away from the magnet. If you wired them wrong one will pop out and the other pop inward. This is very important because they will cancel each other out and sound terrible.
Simply speakers has kits aw aw aw I did mine and it was easy and cheap.
