Steve, I enjoy watching your repair vids. What a cool car collection you have as seen 33:51. What a great way to spend your time repairing your tractor during the winter while your service truck is out of commission.
The B series was from '83 to '86. The '87s had the P series engine. You could also have the broken mount tig welded. JD used to sell a ring gear and you would cut off the old ring gear from the flywheel, then put the new ring gear into a 200° oven for an hour or two, while the flywheel is in the freezer. The ring gear will slip right on and once both pieces are to room temp. they are bonded.
Steve it must be tough being out of commission for so long awaiting a new truck but these videos in the meantime are terrific, really interesting to see you bring these John Deere’s back to life.
onan is known to have valve seats come loose usually from overheating most reason was the shroud packed full of dirt & grass also one of the first thing to be discarded when new was the oil filter to shroud gasket people didn’t think it was necessary because they were hard to put back on after the oil change, you need all the air you can get to keep them cool
I have currently the same prob with my 318 and already have the b pan and starter on the way, I’m a little pissed because I bought the 318 2 weeks ago than about a week into my ownership a cranked it up and a big bang the aftermarket starter had the top crack off and caused the block to crack. I have a really special connection with 318’s my grandfather owns one and it it’s the first thing I learned to drive at about 7 years old and I have just turned 16
Glad to see ya making videos on these tracktors Steve, i do enjoy your common sense approach of troubleshooting and figuring out problems. Keep em comin' man.
I found Part 2 video and decided to see where we ended up on motor swap vs weld and retap ..... You just made me a nervous wreck putting the pan base on! Lol ... If that would've been me, I would've pulled the the threads or stripped them clear out. I don't know how you find these low hour 318s. ... usually I find them with 1800+ hrs. Great idea on the firewall. I've read that this insulation is critical with the motor so close to the battery.
i put a down payment on truck today it has to be shipped in from 1/2 way across the country .its new but 2021 been siting on lot .just what i wanted all the opions i listed. but i got a good deal on it .. pretty much saved 20,000 on it compared to some . waiting for shipping info .
For my Lawn Tractor, when I needed parts, I’d pull them off, and read the number on the part. Usually it was on the side you couldn’t see while the part was attached. Would go on the Internet with the part number. Got parts for a fraction of the dealers price. Replaced the PTO Clutch, Starter and Steering Gear this way. PTO Clutch was also used on a Skid Steer.
Enjoy the videos. Your good at research, as when I fix something, it’s always direct replacement. I just don’t have the patience. Had to have a gas hot water tank installed, I did half the work to speed it up. Part of me wishes I did it myself, but I prefer to not do gas plumbing, and want the permit for gas appliances. Also, be up on new earthquake strapping rules. The guy actually said to me, your knowledgeable, why not do it yourself when prepped everything for me. My response was insurance since I don’t mess with gas. What surprised me, he was gonna use Sharkbite. I balked, so he had to get out fittings and his torch. I am glad supply valve changed and all new copper flex. We don’t hard pipe appliances here.
I remember some of these needed a starter relay kit installed. Think it might have been Kohler engines, the starter would hang from low amps during cranking it over.
On Briggs and Stratton Engines, they used to make an Electronic Ignition that snaps on the Coil and it comes with a cap to plug the pionts plunger. They really run good with an Electronic Ignition on them.
Wish I had a nice air hammer. Need one. Love these tracters. Wish I could get my hands on one or a couple.. Fix them up. Love tinkering with stuff. The gas engines are easier to work on. Love those diesel ones. Very cool. Would fix one up for my brother. He needs one to plow with bad.
Oh, I’d like to know what brand of basket strainers you use. Looks much better than what I have, and I’m tired of changing the wimpy O-ring every year. Your RUclips response for the Rigid tool helped me greatly on changing kitchen faucet. Also, videos on In-sink-erator made that change super easy. Thanks Steve! I was trained by electricians and plumbers while growing up, but forget some things since don’t do that often. It takes me most of the day to do what you can in an hour and half. Oh, toilet flange repair videos saved me a lot.
@@stevenlavimoniere Thanks Steve. I’ll see if I can get that at Ferguson. Guessing not likely at Home Depot. I quit going there except for emergency. Too much overpriced cheap crap.
Strongly recommend you check what the manufacturer recommended torque on your fasteners, and obviously go get you a torque wrench. Can't overemphasize utilizing correct torque values since in some cases, overtorque can lead to several self-initiated problems which are easily precluded.
Boys are never too old to play with their toys. I am right there with you

See some nice cars in the background Steve. Like to see some vids on those.

Seen my fair share of cam bearings go out. Or Mains, then wiping out the magnets inside the flywheel.
those classic cars in the back look pretty awesome

I remember growing up with these models all around as a kid. We had a 60, 212, 314, and a 316. Not all at once. Built like tanks!

Use a torch to do ring gears, heat it up and it pretty much falls off, same when installing, heat it and drop it on. Doesn't take to much heat

My Dad Don't like Champion Spark Plugs. He usually gets rid of them if He can.
Same, Seen too many fail out of the box. I've always had good luck with Autolite or NGK
They was always weak. They suck bad now. My 7ncle had a small engine shop when I was a kid. You could find 4 or 5 dead out of the box in a case.

Big difference is that Briggs used magneto ignition, Onan used battery powered ignition.
My Snap-on tools inherited from my grandfather, SK-Wayne tools from my father. All old, but still like new.

Old guys rule! I was taught about tools and mechanic starting at 9 . Pulled, rebuilt, reinstalled first VW bug engine at twelve!! Just before Jr high!
Merry Christmas Steve

how loose were the rod bolts?
ONE I GOT A LITTLE OUT OF IT .. OTHER ONE WAS TIGHT ... THERE KNOWN TO BE LOOSE .. THATS WHY I CHECKED .. THERE KNOWN TO BLOW RODS
Steve how come your not using a torq wrench to torq the bolts on that motor , especially the connecting rods.
Steve what kind of heat you running in your garage, your in your short sleeve shirt and it's gotta be in the teens outside .
stevie man you gotta make a video about the cars in the background of that video i spy at least four 🧐

interesting that you can knock off the ring gear.

I know you get all kinds of people asking about your at collection, are you ready to negotiate the sale of any of them. ?
Sorry car collection
It would take a lot of money and a lifetime to buy these tool little by little. So buying them all together was a smart move..
Great job.
