- Hi everyone,
I hope you are all doing well & keeping safe!
My name is Tracy and I garden in Zone 4/5 in Toronto, Canada.
You are watching my latest video about Christmas Cactus: Propagation, Planting and Care filmed on December 5, 2020. In this video, I will share with you how I propagate new Christmas Cactus plants from cuttings as well as how I care for them after planting.
I hope this video brings you some joy and inspiration to start making some more new Christmas Cactus plants in your homes. Now that you know how easy it is to care for Christmas cactus plants, perhaps it will inspire you to buy a new plant to enjoy it in your own homes (if you don't have one already). Thank you so kindly for taking some of your precious time to watch my video. Take care & stay safe!
Ps. For those of you that are more “plant” conscientious - these are also known as “Holiday Cactus” or “Thanksgiving Cactus” as they do have more pointy leaves. The “Christmas or Easter Cactus” have sort of scalloped-shaped leaves. However, all growers and garden nurseries in my area are all selling these during Christmas season and calling them “Christmas Cactus”. Hopefully that clears the air regarding why I call these Christmas Cactus. 🧐😊
Happy (in-door) gardening & see you next time!

Very helpful 😊 the best video I seen
Thank you so much for all this information! I want to propagate from my grandmas Christmas cactus, given to her by my grandpa who passed away. I feel like this video made me very confident to do this & not feel like I’ll mess up or kill the cuttings. Thank you so much!
Also, your croton is GORGEOUS!!!
Thank you so much for this video. I live in Michigan, so have much the same growing conditions as Toronto. I used your te unique, and just wanted to let you know that I have grown roots on 6 of 9 cuttings in the last 10 days. I appreciate your efforts and suggestions!
Really comprehensive, detailed presentation. Mine have struggled and now I know why. I would not have guessed these don't like sunlight, but that seems to be the reason for the struggles and also their pots were too big. Thank you.
🏠 This was such a warm display of the most knowledge and care Instructions I have watched .
Thank you for your time ❤. I had hoped for this .
I received a Chritmas cactus from my sister Mary just before the holidays . It's had blooms all over it . What a gift ❤
It was placed in a "pretty teapot on a saucer " . So Cute 🩷
It's such a Beautiful gift . Tiny rich pink buds just ready to burst .
A few began to open just like yours and a few days later , the new buds and those not opened yet began to fall off.
Location,Location, Location . Less drafts, Temp. Changes I'm hoping will help thanks to you 🩷.
It will crush me to lose it and dissappoint my sister too . This was such a lovely gesture. I find it hard to please tropical type plants with forced heat and drafty floors 🏠.
This is exactly what I needed. It was so so relaxing too. ❤️
Wow thank you for sharing . I love Christmas cactus.
Very nice and useful video for this time of the year. You have a very nice voice for explaining and a beautiful home as well!
Great video, thanks. Also like the idea of using a boot tray to keep your counter clean
That is not a Christmas cactus that is a Thanksgiving cactus.
you are so right.these are Schlumbergera truncata.christmas cactus are Schlumbergera buckleyi.cheers
just found in the description Tracy explained why she says Christmas cactus.cheers.
You could just add Epsom salt to water, shake it up until the salt dissolves and pour the water into pot!! It still help bloom and green up the leaves too!! It is a natural fertilizer!! Beautiful plants!!
Hi Allician,
Epsom salt does work too! I sprinkle a few crystals on the soil and it does the trick! 💚🪴🙏. Thank you so much!

I’m so sorry to hear this as the plants are very common in our country. They are also easy to propagate ton make more plants. Hope you find them. 💚

Your Christmas cactus look beautiful, especially the one that has mixed flowers. Thank you for showing us how you propagate them. I love the colors of your Christmas tree.
Thank you Linda! ❤️
@@TracysHomeGarden You're welcome.
Thank you! This was very helpful and informative. I was given one a few years ago and have wanted to propagate it for a while. I have followed your steps while watching this video -I also have mine in a north-facing window and like yours, mine goes crazy with blooms at Christmas and Easter
Thank you so much 😊 for watching and I’m glad you’ve found the video informative. My plants love the north facing windows....and just now the cacti also finished blooming over my kitchen sinks as well! This was very odd because they don’t usually bloom end of May - early June! The blooms were certainly welcomed but sometimes you just cannot explain why a plant behave the way they do. 💚🪴🙏🌸
Beautiful flowers! Thanks for showing. 👍 🙂
Thanks for watching!
Those cactus’ are stunning when they are in bloom. I have one in my classroom on the windowsill at work and it does bloom around this time.
Thank you for watching Derron! Schools definitely can use a few of these for the little ones to enjoy. 👍🪴😊

Great tips on Christmas Cactus, and you have a lot of indoor plants they look great as well.
Thank you Ana! We have cold winters and our windows are usually closed most of the times so the only way to get “fresh” air is through plants. 🙏❤️
Wow..beautiful christmas cactus dear😍😍..i never saw this before..

This plant is in my wish list...Love this video..Nice way of propagation
Thank you so much for watching! 😊. I hope you get your wish soon! 🤞
Thank you so much for this! I had a Christmas cactus that I killed years ago and always wanted another one. Riding down the street someone had free Thanksgiving cactus on the sidewalk. I was so happy but picked up a small one for fear of killing it too. Wish me luck. Mine are not as green but appear really healthy.
Free?! That’s great! They are beautiful houseplants and I cannot say enough about them. Good luck 🍀 and hope they will do well in their new home. 💚💚💚
Wow awesome and beautiful....have a nice day
Thank you for watching!
Hi Tracy! I loved the video. I’ve never seen these Christmas cactus. So unique and pretty. Thanks for sharing tips on how to propogate them. Nice plant collection 💞
Thank you Laura! The are definitely one of the indoor plants 🌱 I love as they are so cheap to buy and easily make more of. The first plant I bought was $10....now I see them for $3 every where. Take care!
@@TracysHomeGarden ok thank you. I will keep my eyes open for them! Enjoy!

Absolutely amazing and beautiful sharing my friend. Stay safe. Good luck :)
Thank you! You too!
I really enjoyed this clip. Very well done
Wow so beautiful 👏👌👌👌👌
Thank you Tracy! I have had Christmas cactus in the past and I am retired and beginning my collection again. However, I have never propagated for new plants so I needed this information. You make it look so easy! Great video.
Wow very nice looking beautiful stay connected
Thank you for watching! 😊
Interesting, thank you for sharing.
Hi Tracy! Lovely & very informative video. I had 4 of those cactus plants (bought them at Shop Rite) they were very beautiful & they always sell them from $2.99-$3.98...2 yrs ago when i bought them with blooms, that was it, never bloomed again, i tried everything (except changing the pots) gave away 2 & just bought 4 (i really love the blooms and cant wait to see them push out...so i replace often)
**You are great with them, i have a ton of other plants so i dont pay much attention to my cactus, i will watch your video repeatedly till i get the hang of caring for them. (Dont like to care for high maintenance plants) so i was relieved when u mentioned not putting them in a dark place. I've learned a lot about plants over the years since i started collecting them in 2007, no matter what info i read or find on the internet (Personal experience is better in most cases. God is Amazing, his creation is astounding!! He loves us immensely & gave us so much to enjoy. Blessings, peace and wellness to you & Loved ones. "John 3:16-18" 🙏💖
Thank you 😊 and all you need is to place the plants near a north facing window and they will bloom for you. North facing windows have indirect light and they bloom twice a year for me.
Ps. If you have a lot of sun, just move them away from the window (move the plants away - 6ft or so and they will bloom in 4-6 weeks time).
All the best 💚🙏💚
Hello my friends I just like to say that the Christmas cactus plants is beautiful I bought my Nan one of those plants and that was about 30 years ago and she still has it and it still looking good thank you for sharing the video with us and be safe you and your family thank you 😍😍❤❤👍

Thank you for sharing about cactus
Thank you for watching! 😊
Beautiful Christmas Cactus, Tracy! I’m thinking of getting one of these as well as it looks so pretty especially when it flowers.😍 Thank you for sharing how to propagate it. 🤗🌹❤️
Thank you for watching Janelyn!
❤❤❤❤❤❤
My climate allows me to grow them outdoors year round. From experience, they bloom at around christmas because their flowering is triggered by the short days of winter. That is the reason why you often hear the advice to give them some hours of darkness throughout the summer. This is how you can make them bloom off-season.
I agree about the shorter day and longer nights required for blooming. In our northern climates, having them next to North and East windows are most suitable for blooming.
Nice tips for Christmas Cactus dear.
Thank you so much 😊

Thank you so much for watching! 😊
It is a beautiful flowering indoor plants - also it flowers during the time when very few other plants do...so I love it. ❤️
Thank you for your video It to the point and i learned some things .I'm glad to know how well yours does rooting in water because that's how I'm doing mine. Wouldn't it b better to put in a bit of gravel for drainage ???
Great video Tracy! I have propagated just sticking in dirt...took them a year to take off. Going to do some cuttings in water when my blooms are done.
Thank you 🙏 so much David! Happy making more cacti.
Elles sont belles des fleurs!
Merci bien! 😁❤️
😀😀👏👏👍👍i like it.
I believe this is a Thanksgiving Cactus. The leaves have pointy edges. A Christmas cactus has smoother edges. Sometimes the plants are confused due to their bloom time and possible mislabeling at point of sale. There is also an Easter cactus which blooms in the Spring.
Hi Marie,
I believe it is a ‘Thanksgiving Cactus’ in the US....but in Canada, they all call these “Christmas Cactus” because it blooms around Christmas....all the nurseries call them as Christmas Cactus...so I think the common name Christmas Cactus is stuck with us forever. Thanks 🙏 for watching Marie.
💚💚💚
I’m in the US and it’s also called a Christmas cactus. I’ve never heard of a “thanksgiving” or a “Easter” cactus. This same plant can bloom during these times when they have the availability and correct times of darker areas. This plant LOVES 10-16 hrs of darkness.
There was a picture of the difference in leaves as to what cactus. Lol, I just call it a holiday cactus as mine blooms on all three holidays.
Pointy lobes=Thanksgiving
Smooth lobes=Christmas
Scalloped lobes=Easter
Yes, yours is Thanksgiving. Direct sun turns leaves red.
Mine is actually Christmas cactus and they tend to be more fragile fronds, but it blooms white and they look exactly like your white one.
One year I had a surprise hot pink show up. When I repotted I started a few new that fell off. Yippee! It is going to bloom--Hot Pink!
I need to move to a darker room in September as the new larger tv and being a night owl hampers full bloom. It only blooms on the side that faces wall and window. So I turn it and now the other side is blooming.😂. No wonder it blooms all 3 holidays😂
Wow your cactus looks so good! Beautiful upload hun 👌
Thanks so much
Omg omg just unbelievable great 👏👏👏👏
Thank you 🙏

Excellent info!
Love these💕 I’ve never seen these before. I will definitely be looking for these plants. Thank you for all the knowledge you share.💕
Thank you Maria….it’s a gorgeous plant to have around this time and they are reliable and easy to take care of. Hope you find some soon. 😊💚🪴
Gorgeous collection of house plants, lovely flowers on the Christmas Cactus :)
Thank you for watching! 😊
Way too long could be edited quite a bit. But my big critique is regarding watering newly transplanted cuttings: how often, how much, when to begin a regular watering schedule. I have been allowing cuttings to "heal" or form a callous for a few days before putting them in water- is that necessary? I'd appreciate someone to reply! ( I am in the process of rooting some cuttings, so I do not have any results yet).
Thank you Rae for your constructive feedback.
No, I don’t find the 24hr to callous (heal) necessary at all.
I just put the cuttings directly into a clear glass of water…and place the cuttings on a windowsill…only thing is to change the water often.
All the best 💚💚💚
I just got my very first Christmas cactus, so excited to propagate them
You will soon have many plants as they can be easily propagated...such an easy blooming cacti that doesn’t need too much sun so I really love it so much! Enjoy your cactus plants! 💚🪴
@@TracysHomeGarden I will enjoy it for sure, Do they love water? or just the same as on succulents?
I say they need the same amount of water as succulent....I water it once a week. 🪴💚

Christmas Cactus 🌵!
Thank you so much 💓
From Korea 🇰🇷
Thank you so much for watching! 🪴💚
It is not only what direction the plant faces, but also the distance from the window. You can see the plants have purple tinge to leaves, indicating too much direct light. Ok in east facing window but move it back from right at the window.
I think the red tint may be due to the dryer soil conditions I have and not the light situation as the plants get no sun on the windowsill. I have moved the plants about 6” away and they don’t bloom well as being right up against the window. I had some of the plants on an east window last year and they didn’t bloom as well as those in the north windows.
The red could also be that the plants doesn’t have enough Mg ions to make chlorophyll (which will turn them more green). This will improve if I water it with a little Epsom salt added.
Thank you for your suggestions. 💚

I have 2 plants, one white and one pink. They both have pointy leaves and I am going propagate one of each. Also have a huge snake plant and I plan to propagate it as well. It is growing out if it's pot. The whole thing needs repotting.
Happy indoor gardening Nancy! These are two of my most favourite indoor plants. 💚
@@TracysHomeGarden I wish I could grow Aloe plants. Unfortunately I kill them and I found out recently that they bloom! Never knew that, also found out the snake plant blooms as well, I'm looking forward to that day!!!
I do have a south east corner that gets a lot of light but no direct..Will try there.
Southeast would be good as well…you may have to move the plant about 1ft or so away from the window on hot summer days. All the best 💚💚💚
Good morning Tracy, right-on-time video for me. I have several of these...one (light pink) is blooming proliferous, the other 3 or 4...nothing. I have never thought to fertilize them, since they are "cacti" and didn't think they needed much (you were so cute with the cactus vs cacti, who cares), but now I will def feed them. Merry Christmas and a happy and safe holiday season to you and your family.
P.S. from what we can see, your home is very uncluttered and peaceful...beautiful environment.
Thank you Gina...you are so sweet! Lol...how I maintain the gardens...it is the same indoor as well....uncluttered (as much as possible)...my friends call me a “clean freak”....the environment can definitely change your mood. Have a wonderful holiday season to you too!
