It can be operated off of unprepared fields like converted road sections and has sensors and weapons the equal or better than any Russian operational fighter. - 5 diesel electric subs including three Gotland class one of the best of its kind. Ukrainians state they are the best artillery they have in operation. - 120 Strv 122 MBTs a Swedish highly modified Leopard 2 that is one of the best in the world. The NLAW that has been used to great effect by Ukraine to help stop Russian armor was primarily designed by Saab Bofors in Sweden. Swedish troops are very professional, any battlegroup that Sweden commits to any NATO operation is going to be a highly effective addition.
Not to mention that Sweden has sent troups to help out in any conflict that the US has been involved in for the last 25+ years. Baltic Sea folks ... Not the North Sea ...
Please enlighten me what conflicts are those? That Sweden have sent troops into US conflicts and not UN lead operations. Afghan conflict was maybe dominated by US presence but many nations took part and as with Sweden they were more often a peacekeeping force.
It was noted that Sweden is on the North Sea. It has very much longer shores on the Gulf of Bothnia and, much more strategically important, the Baltic Sea. They have 5 attack submarines and nearly 100 jet fighters with 60 more on order. That's quite a force for a country of only 10 million people.

With Finland and hopefully soon Sweden as a NATO members there is no chance that russia could do anything batshit crazy at baltic sea area even without any help from other countries.

Sweden has exponentially more to offer NATO than Canada does or will. If Canada does ever decide to increases defense spending it will be in a too little too late situation, it is unfortunate. Having the US next door has made Canadian leadership far too complacent over the years.

Well, unfortunately not. We have good tech but in (too) small numbers. And the conscript army has not been around since 30 years, only a small professional army.
What can Sweden bring to NATO in 2024? Frankly, a heck of a lot more than what Canada offers in 2024. I’m a retired 3rd generation Canadian service member. x1 Grandfather x2 Uncles + my father then my service 1967-96. We were all frontline. Army ( Grandfather, x1 uncle & myself) x1 Uncle Navy & my father airforce. Military presence from the late 1800s to 1996. Since the end of WW2 both traditional governing parties of Canada have diminished our military. The last Canadian PM to meet the NATO 2% target was PET. Fact. Since him all have reduced numbers of personnel, current equipment & military budgets. Canada has been a freeloader in both NORAD & NATO for generations. We have great personnel. Too few of them. Poorly supported due to Canadian voting public indifference for generations. Both governing parties know this & thus don’t support the Canadian military. So yes, Sweden is a motivated new member of NATO. Canada, not so much.
We all took out the peace dividend, and basically we all disarmed to a minimum 15 years ago. Putin made us rearm, the nearest neighbours first, and the rest later. Canada has just felt more protected by the oceans than the Europeans, but Russia is a threat to Canada as well.
A Quick Look at what each military has in assets, and it’s clear Sweden is still a significantly smaller military. Even with our cuts, our military budget is $26 billion, compared to their $11 billion.
Living just to the north of the US has made us complacent, with some of the crap going on there we might want to rethink that. My grandad served in the Canadian army in both world wars, we really don't want to go unprepared into another major conflict.
Regarding capabilities after been neutral for 200 years. Don’t confuse neutral with defenseless. For Sweden the main enemy has been Russia for the past 300 years and we’ve prepared to defend ourselves against them forever. To the point we during the early stages of the Cold War had the worlds fourth largest air force. There’s a certain focus that comes from knowing who you plan to defend yourself against.
Exactly. Sweden meddled very significantly during WW2 (above all supported Finland), and carried out missions for NATO in the years following. Not exactly neutral. That word is never used in Swedish. It's non-alignment (alliansfrihet).
With Sweden and Finland in NATO the russians find them selves isloated in the Baltic any attempts to annex Latvia Eastonia and Lithuania is next to impossible without risking a major war.
Just land. Land where to put missile launching plataforms under surveillance of "US troops" (actually mercs). Speaking of Sweden. How is going the so called "gang wars"?

@@j.barren3738 Totally wrong. Nato only sent what they can spare and a bit more, without compromising their own defence. I dont know how you can believe the kremlin & media bullshit.
Now all Arctic Council nations except Russia are members of NATO: Canada, Denmark, Finland, Iceland, Norway, Sweden, and the US, As Russia has become more aggressive in the Arctic, this is good for all of us.
The long-standing neutrality of Finland and Sweden simply meant that they had to have well-developed militaries of their own. So they are joining NATO as potent military powers, not as beggars with their hands out. Between Finland extending NATO's defensible land border with Russia, and Sweden's strong air and naval presence, the Baltic really is a NATO lake now, which limits what Russia can do there. Of course, expect Putin to call this a "provocation" (one of his favorite words).
Iirc the Hungarian Speaker signed since they’re between presidents atm. The document then goes to Sweden and the Swedish foreign secretary will fly over to Washington to hand it over to the US Sec Defense. Then it’s formally done. Estimates say about two weeks from now.
This guy is mixing up the North and Baltic Seas! I’d agree with some of what he says, but I do not think he is an expert by any means. Whatever, Sweden’s capacity to distribute high-end and low maintenance forces and turn around their Gripens(previously Viggens, Drakens, etc.) very quickly in remote locations by a small number of mostly conscripts is exceptional! They certainly will be a valuable addition to NATO! They have many other excellent land and sea capabilities too. They have always been a country to take their defence extremely seriously, but they think outside the box!

What does Sweden bring to NATO.
- 100+ Saab Gripen fighters the lowest maintenance cost and highly flexible 4th gen fighter. It can be operated off of unprepared fields like converted road sections and has sensors and weapons the equal or better than any Russian operational fighter.
- 5 diesel electric subs including three Gotland class one of the best of its kind. On more than one occasion Swedish subs have penetrated anti-sub screens and destroyed high value targets like aircraft carriers on training operations.
- Archer 155mm mobile gun system.

The iron north. Scandinavia as a whole is near impossible to invade, and a united Scandinavia is unbeatable. With all of Scandinavia in NATO now, it would be suicide for Russia to invade this part of the world.

Sweden and finland actually have decent militaries, they will not be passengers like Canada has been.
They’re too close to Russia to be a passenger.
Ouch, our men and women of the CAF are not passengers and have proven to punch above their weight class.
Are we under funded and undermanned, yes but that's the fault of every government since we joined and every Canadian that doesn't.
Actually and this despite Canada not meeting the 2% of GDP standard ,on defense spending , Canada has increased its spending a continuing tremdline up , now spemding on defense approximately as much as Italy. in the last year Canada bought the F 35s,P8s ,MQ 9s , the new Type 26 frigates ordered a couple years back , as wwll as both anti air and anto tank missile systems for Canadas troops in Latvia ,as part of the Nato mission there. so while Canada can and should be doing more it isnt nothing either ,the Arctic patrol ships coming in and with surface navy almost as large as russias northern fleet ,about as big as Spains, Canada alao expandimg both its troop size ,to brigade strength in and continuing the leadership of the Nato battlegroup in Latvia , having done so since that was put in in 2017
actually Canada does front against russia across the Arctic ocean ,the worlds 2 largest countries ,russian aircraft probing Canadas airspace at times in the far north
Canada really needs to reach 2% as do a lot of other countries in NATO.
We should have biought their Gripen and not the expensive so-so aircraft that is designed for "shock and awe" attacks but not for defending Canadian air space.
Sweden is slowly waking up from our neutrality dream and restarting our military complex, it will take some time but we will get there.

Secondly; there is Norway on the left and Finland on the right with 1340 km (approx. 832 miles) border with Russia. There is a country with legacy in Winter War with Simo Häyhä, Lauri Törni (aka Larry Thorne) and all lost brave men to protect Nordic freedom at that time. Welcome Sweden; we need you and Nordic will be unite with excellent Jas Grippens, equipment, submarines etc. Love you brothers.
Sweden has exponentially more to offer NATO than Canada does or will. If Canada does ever decide to increases defense spending it will be in a too little too late situation, it is unfortunate. Having the US next door has made Canadian leadership far too complacent over the years.
Canada is no country that anyone counts with in a war their military war presence makes no difference @ all.

Isn’t Sweden a military powerhouse? I’d think it’s more of a ‘what can NATO bring to Sweden’
If Sweden is such a military powerhouse then why join NATO after all these years !!!
Well, unfortunately not. We have good tech but in (too) small numbers. And the conscript army has not been around since 30 years, only a small professional army.
It's a mistake to think Putin will lay back as NATO increases pressure.
What can Canada bring to NATO? Why not the same as Sweden? 2% !
Err. Not neutrality for 200+ years but non alignment. Err. Not the North sea. Actually it's called the Baltic sea. byw we love Canada:)
That budget is dubbeling for Sweden now and Sweden has a smaller population then Canada also. @@smokynagata88

Exactly. Sweden meddled very significantly during WW2 (above all supported Finland), and carried out missions for NATO in the years following. Not exactly neutral. That word is never used in Swedish. It's non-alignment (alliansfrihet).
