A Cold Experience In The "Little India" Of Penang Island, Malaysia 🇲🇾

  • I was so excited to bring memories back from India, when I found out there is a "Little India" area on Penang Island, Malaysia. So I took the opportunity to eat something Indian and also meet Indians who live on this beautiful island. Somehow my expectations were high, and people did not feel engaged, or excited about my filming. But the food was delicious.
I guess it was my mistake to have high expectations and expect real Indian hospitality from the people working in Little India. What do you think?

I never said I am entitled to exclusive service just because I am with the camera. Even without the camera, I would act the same, eat the same, and talk the same.
My travels are raw and either it is a good experience or bad I share it for your judgment. So I shared how I felt about the whole experience.
I love India and Indians, and I know how good they treated me in India.🇮🇳

Those workers are from south India not local Indians. May be boss was watching over. Normally we don't talk much while cooking because of hygienic wise. We have to go for crash cause for handling food. If customer complaints got food poisoning they'll shields the stalls for two weeks. Compulsory get vaccinated only allowed to operate. Information only

A word of advice to you as you travel - please don't take things personally. As a traveler you should know that you meet all sorts of people; not everyone is going to be excited to talk to you or be filmed. They may have lots of other pressures that they may not want to share especially because you are filming. Keep an open mind.

Davud, don't take it at heart. This shop looks busy, and it's obvious those guys don't like to seek attention unnecessarily, they got work to do. If you noticed the shop is by a busy street (Market Street), many of his customers are on bikes and ready to go. So, the workers have to attend to them quickly, if not those bike customers might cause traffic jam on the street. If public make a traffic jam complaint to the City Council, the shop has a potential to be removed. Different country different rules, different people different culture, that's why you're travelling, right?

And you expect him to respond to you at all the time?
And you are saying in the title "COLD" experience...?

You need to communicate better too...

You acted like a little kid being ignored and label it as "cold" treatment. Afterwards you kept asking too many questions while they were trying to concentrate on their jobs. I thought they were gonna tell you to take a hike, but they took care of you anyway. Also, Penang gets more tourists than India and I believe concern about them is much less there.

today, I buy waffle, but need to butter chocolate, and peanut butter. the seller ask me "how old, earn how much $$$, married, lived where, how many children"
you are right, sometimes people talk, sometimes they dont.
but when they do, cannot keep asking personal questions and then say "oh, we are Asians, very friendly"
thats not true. she just wanted to compare if im earning more than her. I have around 5..6 waffle bakeries around my apartment...ive crossed out around 4 of them...I usually cross out establishments who ask personal questions.
more and more each day, it's like I cant buy any more food. because buying = ask question "how much money do you earn"
can I answer "you go and die." Will they prepare my food..?
it's very tough really. for me, 100% I just want to 1) buy food 2) pay money, 3) leave. it is a lot of harassment.

Love your blogs David. Keep up the good work. As a Sri Lankan I too might get a bit stressed out when you want to see the food etc. With the pandemic everhing has changed and in many restaurants and hotels you can't go to the kitchen for hygienic purposes. My son almost got fired becasue he made this mistake. He was working to gain some experience. It was a very popular chain around the world, so it's their job Vs customer services. Just try to understand David when it comes to food it's a very tricky business. Be safe and God bless you.

      agree, Jenny...pandemic, everyone must clean
but few times we paid for food-item, we point, we pay...ANOTHER item come, much lower value.
not saying Sri Lanka cheat, I did love Kandy. I also agree how u say "pandemic...everything kept clean" but, sometimes, we see, we point, we pay - very low priced food comes to our table so.
after being cheated so many times, we are not wrong to be careful too. im not saying your son cheated, im saying a lot of food sellers are just trying to cheat and be bullies only because they know even Police cannot help.
so it's only up to us buyers to be vigilant/careful.

I’m not sure if this is true but I’ve heard it from many Malaysians who studies in my country. You’ll never see such policies is non-muslim countries.

So don’t have a long conversations with them, cause they are busy and have to work. And especially don’t ask if you can sit there. I think you don’t have to ask things like that. And don’t tell brother to everyone. It’s common in Azerbaijan but not there.

From what I heard, Malays muslims treats their minority unfairly even though the minorities are the main contributor to Malaysian success and economy. I heard the laws and policies only favors the muslims. If that is true then. I have zero respect for muslims. In non muslim countries, muslim are treated as equal.

In Malaysia, Indian is a race it encompasses Tamil (whether they are Muslim or Hindu), Telugu, Punjab etc. Same goes to Chinese it includes Hakka, Hokkien, Teochew, Cantonese ETC. Malays too are the same for Javanese, Banjarese, Bugis, Malay, Minang or Mandailing provided you are Muslim. If any of these Malay sub-races are not Muslim they are called Bumiputra.
When we call them Indian-Muslim we are referring to their race and religion not their nationality, if we refer tham as Malaysian Indian-Muslim it will be a mouthful....
