Pretty much. I've seen one in the flesh and they're pretty amazing. IIRC this one's intake manifold is different - less massive if you can believe that. The word is because of the direct injection you have to drive them regularly and on longer trips else you get fuel in the oil issues.
That camaro wasnt the worst one take. All the stanced and lowered douchecanoes (BMWs) that rub most of the time are way worse than having 3 of your 4 breaks working.
Yea but those cars actually have BRAKES. there is nothing really wrong with having a car a slammed to the ground as long as its with in reason. And the red 740li which is what i assume you are talking about actually was not bad at all, not my taste but to each his own. HOWEVER having malfunctioning brakes and then handing the keys to that car over to somebody to drive on a canyon road that is heavy on the brakes and then claiming its "safe." Its not even a comparison.
For real... I was watching the video from the start, getting indigestion just thinking about how I'd feel starting up the car given the cost/rarity, then a fucking horse out of nowhere??? I would have legit needed a change of undies, and I'm not even joking.
Stunning. Just stunning. Old Mercs were just so beautiful and up to the W124 genuinely were one of the best vehicles you could buy. The ultimate classic.
OH MY GOSH! PLESE try to source more classics cars like this, Matt. Everyone is reviewing the new, boring, modern stuff. It's *always* the same. "rides a bit better. Turbocharged engine has more power and torque, but it might as well be electric because I can't hear it anyway. DCT is even faster. Oh, and the car is utterly uncontrollable with the driver aids turned off." I know that trying to find classic cars in a condition such that they can be enjoyed and thrashed around a canyon can be a "needle in a haystack" scenario, but they're SO much more interesting than the modern snoozefests that we call "supercars." (and I say that as someone who has been around Silverstone at full pace in a 675LT and thrashed an Aventador around the roads of Italy).
I'm sure you already watch it if you like old, interesting cars, but in case you haven't, check out Harry's Garage. And I agree, it would be awesome if there were more cars like this on the One Take.
Congratulations, Conor! I used to daily a 1969 P1800S Volvo. Loved that car to death. Built like a brick and reliable as anything. But, times change as they liked to say, and I wanted to experience something new. :)
It wasn't a "humble brag." In formal argumentation, it's called a concession. If I had not included that bit, I'm sure there would be some neophyte replying "Have you ever *DRIVEN* a modern supercar? If you haven't, you can't call them a snoozefest." Even though the Tu Quoque previously demonstrated is logically fallacious, it still helps, if for nothing else than an ethical standpoint, to demonstrate that I actually have some credentials before making what some would see as an incredulous claim.
This is what it's all about. Matt's obvious excitement is the take away from this video. The Gullwing is to be commended for being the genesis of such enthusiasm.
All those people who think they know it all. Let me tell you, drum brakes are potentially way better than disc brakes. Why? Do your math and you see for yourself........
Well, seeing as how I almost didn't make it to high-school due to how lousy I was at math, I'd say that's pretty much a recipe for disaster :|. However, as the owner of cars with both discs on all fours and discs-front, drums-rear, I can say that the difference is mostly in the brake balance. On my old Dacia, it feels like the front loads up more under braking. On my slightly-less-old SAAB, it's more of a progressive stop. But, seeing as how I suspect you actually know math, and I am always ready to be schooled, please explain your statement :D
Hey dude, don't be shitty. Nobody's here to rag on drum brakes, we're here to shit on last week's Camaro and the irresponsible fuck of an owner who didn't bother to mention his car only had 3/4 brakes working before letting Matt drive it on a winding canyon road.
I'm 47 now and have loved this car since I was a little boy. Always had pictures of it. I'm sure like most boys at that time we were drawn in by the doors. Such a timeless beauty
Thanks Matt for showing us a great icon and small tidbits of what is means to own a 50ies icon including the relative cost and difficulty of sourcing parts.
If they have four left, why not go to some fabrication shop and get 100 or so molded? They won't be factory parts, but I'm sure a good, working knock-off could be made.
that logic makes sense for auction or sale, especially in the case of classic icons like this car where those little finite details can be the difference in huge amounts of money. BUT for this car which is somewhat treated like a driver, it would make sense to save the OEM parts for a future sale and use knock-offs for the random drives and exhibition.
Mercedes is still selling parts for these, might find these rubber parts somewhere here to order at a dealer if you search for W198 series. Don't think the parts are actually all that expensive. partssearch.mercedes-benz-classic.com/
this for me, is the mother of all mercedeses, so elegant and the engineering that went into this car is amazing. stunner car . most of these gullwings are sitting in museums in europe, nice that someone actually drives it :)
As a kid in the sixties my Grandad owned several gullwings and roadsters. I got to drive one from Hague VA to Reedville VA, thrill of a life ride. Best he had was a gunmetal gray over red roadster with a 4.11 rear gear. Incredible noise in first and second.
i was scrolling down to read comments and then I heard that tire screech and my heart sank. I scrolled up to find a dude riding a horse? So many emotions!
Those brakes though! Very impressive Matt, thought you were going to put your foot through the floor - my favorite TST vid since that dude and the Z. So fun - thanks for sharing Matt!
He's mentioned in his podcast that he can't imagine goign on much longer because the lack of cars and he doesn't like doing the same vehicles over and over unless they are super special.
Wow, what a great One Take. The Gullwing is truly one of the best cars ever imagined. If I had unlimited cash to collect cars, it would be in my top 10 and would be driven.
Matt looked like a kid on Christmas morning with a new bike! I would act like a kid on Christmas morning with a new bike. Very cool to see these cars being driven!
The engine, the looks, the drivability. Just a car way ahead of its time. That it is able to feel like a sporty car today, speaks for itself. Nice video, keep up the work^^
I love watching these videos cuz I feel like I can live a little vicariously through you to get a hint at what it might be like to drive something that is made of unobtainium unless you have 220 Grand.
Love the car, red paint line in the middle thumbs up to it. You drive this car to a cocktail party dressed smartly with boat shoes and vintage designer sunglasses with a beautiful lady dressed in red sitting along....PERFECT
Matt you look so happy at the very end of the video! So much more genuine happiness vs the bone 'maro where you were forcing laughter but actually dying inside 😬
Beautiful car. I saw one in the 70's up close, a guy at a station by our house had one he was going to do work on. Even back then he finally had to put a NOT FOR SALE sign on the car as he was literally getting asked a dozen times a day about it. Same color as this one with the red interior.
Strong plug game, I like it it's starting to feel like you get to do more plugs for companies that you genuinely want to, not squarespace and other normal stuff
The fact that this car has lost some of its value in money makes it a properly cool machine again as opposed to a museum object that drives 10 miles a year! Love it! Whoever swapped the engine and the original colour has done something amazing! 👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Love the straight 6 !! Mercedes should have never stopped making it. I got a ride in a Gull wing back in the 70's from a soldier that imported one. I was hitch hiking and he picked me up.. He was a Staff Sergeant. Not sure what the car was worth back then.. But it was worth a lot.. Even more now..
geez, what a streak you're on: driving the biggest car icon, last time THE least sorted deathtrap you've filmed, and before that the funnest wee One Take ever!!
Depending on the design of the rubber grommet/bumper, it may actually be a common part depending on design and dimensions. It also wouldn't be hard to get something custom made to any spec. For how rare the part is as an OEM piece, it may be worth investing in some tooling and having a shop make them for you. Make some extras and sell them to other owners.
Damn that sounds good for a 1955 car. Can you imagine what that looked like compared to what else was around, especially in the U.S at the time, they were driving barges with wheels! Man, that is a sick car! And big up Dieter for driving it, these cars were meant to be driven. I understand people putting absolute mint cars in a air conditioned environment and taking them to shows in a truck, as they are absolute the best of the best. But if you have the balls to drive one, then do it. Great video, and i say it once again, no place for horses on roads in this day and age!
Jay Leno had one of these. He said on his review if you need parts Mercedes will get you parts for any car they ever made. Jay mentioned that he needed brake components and was going to machine new parts but was able to get them right from Mercedes. Not cheap mind you.
I had this car in several Forza Motorsport iterations..Onxe tuned and upgraded with modern engine and stuff, including big wheels it drives ready competitive.
So surprised to see my dream car featured on here. I'm going to be undertaking a project in the near future to do this car as a hand fabricated replica. I'm going to fab the chassis from scratch, and hand build the aluminum body like the rare alloy cars were. I can't afford the real thing, but nothing stopping me from building a replica on modern running gear. These cars have an elegance, a presence and a feel like no other. For the 50's, this thing was like a spaceship from the future.
This is a great episode, it's fun seeing real excitement and it's clear Matt loves the car. I was so happy to hear that they drive this car, it's way too pretty to sit in a garage as an "investment".
Thanks for not hitting the girls on horses.
Most underrated comment I’ve ever seen on any video ever.
I was just trying to hit on the girls horses 😢
you followed up the worst one take in history (no brakes!) with this car. thank you, Matt!
Have you ever driven one? No don't lie ok.
What's really bad is the guy on a car video thread that can't spell "brakes".
One more thing to add to the list of things to look out for while filming One Takes
1. People stretching in the street
2. Log on chain
3. Horse ladies
+
AbbakleKannoxis 4. A herd of cyclists
5. Jackass with a Z28 that has 3 working brakes claiming to be "trolling".
Anyone got links or titles for these episodes (except this current one)?
Fid Fyodor Dinan m4 for the joggers, VF supercharged huracan for the log
That moment when a Unicorn almost crashed into a Horse...
For real... I was watching the video from the start, getting indigestion just thinking about how I'd feel starting up the car given the cost/rarity, then a fucking horse out of nowhere??? I would have legit needed a change of undies, and I'm not even joking.
I don't know, I'm not a man lol
A log dragged on the road while reviewing a Lambo. Now a girl on a horse while reviewing a 300SL. Matt, the universe is testing you! lol
h i k k u s u b e i don't forget that random group of ladies doing stretches on the side of the road.
h i k k u s u b e i imagine what's gonna pop up next in these one takes, if I had to guess I'd say the villain from iron man 2.
BCJDM lol that was the best. " i don't recommend stretching *in* the road"
what one take was that?
VF Huracan
Boom ! One of the most beautiful cars ever made
Mandatory thumbs up for this one, stunning car.
45 ROB you and me are always here, nice and early commenting away hahaha
Started applauding irl as soon as I saw the title. 300SL is an automatic win.
You guys stop asking Matt about shit.
LOL
you guys have been asking me about these cigars
anybody know where I can get those sweet sunglasses?
hahaha
no idea, I do however know where to get some awesome coffee and a free smokingtire t-shirt
The memes
Is there some sort of TST promotional code? I'd like to get 10% off
TheSmokingCigar
Looks more like someone lit a dog turd.
At least the brakes work on this one!
Alexander Grochowski lol ikr, that last one take was cancer
It was funny though.
This is cancer too with the cigars
Stunning. Just stunning. Old Mercs were just so beautiful and up to the W124 genuinely were one of the best vehicles you could buy.
The ultimate classic.
this is the perfect antidote to the last video
Those cigars are T H I C C. Fitting for a video on a 300SL
my thoughts exactly. Wasnt even mad at the advertising on this video because lets face it... 300SL and cigars go hand in hand
Much better than the last guy with "three brakes".
Oh, and the car is utterly uncontrollable with the driver aids turned off."

flyingphoenix113 stupid humble brag st the end of your comment ruined it, dipshit
It wasn't a "humble brag." In formal argumentation, it's called a concession. If I had not included that bit, I'm sure there would be some neophyte replying "Have you ever *DRIVEN* a modern supercar? flyingphoenix113 I couldn't even make it through your pretentious reply
My favorite car in the whole world. I owned two 190sl's at 18 and 20 and am 65 years old today. Thanks for the video.
This is what it's all about. Matt's obvious excitement is the take away from this video. The Gullwing is to be commended for being the genesis of such enthusiasm.
I feel like there's always something random as hell that happens in these videos. Those damn horses lol
Manny Espinosa That's the beauty of the one take I suppose!
Manny Espinosa
A constant one is almost running over squirrels.
The guy towing a tree stump/log behind his SUV still stands out as the worst for me . . .
this car is amazing.. the look, the sound... perfect
I think you're onto something with these older iconic cars. Kudos to all the people who actually drive them!
Well, thats an upgrade from the last Camaro.
Yeah, drum brakes better than no brakes :P
All those people who think they know it all. Let me tell you, drum brakes are potentially way better than disc brakes. Why? Do your math and you see for yourself........

A pedal bike is an upgrade from the last Camaro. At least all the brakes on those work!
I'm 47 now and have loved this car since I was a little boy. Always had pictures of it. I'm sure like most boys at that time we were drawn in by the doors. Such a timeless beauty
Im 17 and I love this car, but if Im being honest, I'd be scared to drive it if I had the chance
One of my favorite, if not THE favorite one take. The car, the scenery, the vibe, everything - ace
Thanks Matt for showing us a great icon and small tidbits of what is means to own a 50ies icon including the relative cost and difficulty of sourcing parts.
One of my all time favorite cars. As they go up in value, most go into storage. So nice to see one getting enjoyed.
This is the best and most honest review you've ever done. That is probably the only Mercedes I'd ever want to own.
This is the first one I have watched without skipping forward at all. Excellent video.
If they have four left, why not go to some fabrication shop and get 100 or so molded? They won't be factory parts, but I'm sure a good, working knock-off could be made.

Don't worry they are building newer than new in germany as we speak .
Mercedes is still selling parts for these, might find these rubber parts somewhere here to order at a dealer if you search for W198 series. Don't think the parts are actually all that expensive. partssearch.mercedes-benz-classic.com/
The engine's already been replaced. You might as well just keep the look intact, better than sitting in storage!
iirc mercedes will make you any part you like for any post war car out of production.
this for me, is the mother of all mercedeses, so elegant and the engineering that went into this car is amazing. stunner car . most of these gullwings are sitting in museums in europe, nice that someone actually drives it :)

Yeah - great video - Matt's been on fire lately, just when I thought he might be winding it down, he comes up with some great cars and videos!
Why you say that? Is he quitting?
He's mentioned in his podcast that he can't imagine goign on much longer because the lack of cars and he doesn't like doing the same vehicles over and over unless they are super special.
HooverTuber never heard that, hope it's not true.
Wow, what a great One Take. The Gullwing is truly one of the best cars ever imagined. If I had unlimited cash to collect cars, it would be in my top 10 and would be driven.
You should've had the cigar in your mouth while driving the SL. Fits so perfectly! Casa Blanca style!
Matt looked like a kid on Christmas morning with a new bike! I would act like a kid on Christmas morning with a new bike. Very cool to see these cars being driven!
I'm from Philly, can confirm that Holt's is the jam. Great choice of sponsorship Matt!
Ahh love it!! That noise gave me goose bumps... And it looks so timeless. I may watch it again right now in fact.
I'm loving these product placements. Get paid doing what you love and hooking us up with dope car videos. It's a win all around.
Thank you, Mr Heinz! Unbelievable car. I remember you talking about this on the podcast. So glad to see it here.
Had my '11 Silver/Red Gullwing parked opposite this 300SL at C&C a couple months ago. So cool to see them together.
what an absolutely beautiful car. i wanted this one to go twice as long as it did.
These cars are stunning. I got to sit in one of these that had completely matching numbers. They're just completely in their own league
This is fun on many levels from the hard start to the horses to the history of the car.
The engine, the looks, the drivability. Just a car way ahead of its time. That it is able to feel like a sporty car today, speaks for itself. Nice video, keep up the work^^
Probably the best one-take. Love this car. Owner seemed pretty cool too.
Best One Take I've watched. That car is gorgeous.
One of the best cars ever made , and is so beautiful too
Oh, THIS was a treat! I love the more vintage stuff and this is as beautiful as it gets.
This is the most knowledgeable person Matt has ever had on the show. I mean HP and the type of brakes, covered!
What a treat to drive, totally sophisticated for it's time a very special german classic.
That was epic. Probably the most sought-after car you've ever driven! Wowowow!
That's the best car thing I've seen all year. Matt please review more classic cars!
That over-run sounds amazing!
Love that this car is a driver and has replaced paintwork. Just too cool to sit in some collection all day
Holt's is AWESOME. Their prices are awesome and so is their service. That's more than I can say about some other cigar retailers..
Best one take yet. Lovely scenery, lovely car.
The sound of this car is so unbelievable.
Beautiful and 4 working brakes too.
15 seconds of your advert was enough for me to like the video, don't ever change Matt
steve ikr
also loving these earlier upload times, finally getting my 8 hours
Strong plug game, I like it
it's starting to feel like you get to do more plugs for companies that you genuinely want to, not squarespace and other normal stuff
While I'm not a fan of ads in general, I respect the fact that Matt is a fellow Cigar Man.
The fact that this car has lost some of its value in money makes it a properly cool machine again as opposed to a museum object that drives 10 miles a year!
Love it! Whoever swapped the engine and the original colour has done something amazing!
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
what a bounce-back from yesterday's video lol. beautiful classic!
Good to see the brakes work on this one Matt! Dear LORD what a car!!
The sound is incredible
Always entertaining to see Matt cheese it up for the product 😂 I look forward to the ads at this point. Keep em coming! And please more classic cars!
That's how you host a Car vid... even knows the road! Awesome Ride
Wow, beautiful bit of history here.
this review was one of the best ones in a long time
That car is something else... and that sound wow 😳👍🏻❤️
Wow, great opportunity, thanks for sharing it with us!
One of the best ones Matt. Thanks for posting this!
watches, sunglasses, coffee and now cigars? are you the bald generously proportioned american brother of james bond?
textmachine09 Billy mays
LMAO. hope you get a wine sponsor soon.
RIP Billy Mays
textmachine09 Up next: *Billy Mays here for Chipotlaway*
So where does the ball sack underwear fit into this scenario?
Big city toilet
55 300sl o my god!!! It's amazing it's beautiful. If I had the money I would build a house around it. The 300sl is art on wheels
Dude, LOVE cigars. Have a solid 1000+ cigars in my humidor. Great plug!
This was a crazy entertaining episode! Awesome car, drama during the start, almost crashed into a damn horse!?! Crazy!
I'm glad you're going to retro reviews , this was great! speaking of bugs, I'm surprised we haven't had a variety yet
Jay Leno had one of these. He said on his review if you need parts Mercedes will get you parts for any car they ever made. Jay mentioned that he needed brake components and was going to machine new parts but was able to get them right from Mercedes. Not cheap mind you.
I had this car in several Forza Motorsport iterations..Onxe tuned and upgraded with modern engine and stuff, including big wheels it drives ready competitive.
also congratz on one huge tick off the bucket list Matt
The most iconic car ever made. Period.
That motor looks 30 years ahead of it's time. Beautiful car.
In San Diego We also have a guy who owns a 190SL roadster that he restored. It was featured on Petrolicious and its BEEEEAAUUTIIIFULLLLLL
Stunning beauty, a real classic.
Bet show in a long time. Good job Matt!
Absolutely Beautiful car in a very beautiful place. Thanks.
Matt, you and Rob always get the best sponsors, how the hell do you guys manage it.
This is a great episode, it's fun seeing real excitement and it's clear Matt loves the car. I was so happy to hear that they drive this car, it's way too pretty to sit in a garage as an "investment".
haha perfect video, a 300SL Gullwing seems like the appropriate car to have drama at the start whether internally induced or by horse.
Definitely one of my favorite one takes! Thanks Matt!
