@@fade2blk289 You're right, I'm only 30. I guess after hearing how great this film was, I just wasn't expecting a half hour of kind of meaningless banter and a wedding scene that lasts close to an hour. The rest of the film may be great, I just didn't have the patience for how long and drawn out the director made it, so I had to turn it off. There is just no need for how cripplingly boring the first part of the film is.
@@RBunks92 but had you watched it all the way to the end you would have seen how/why those scenes were so important to the film. Oh well, maybe you'll give it another try someday. Plus I really liked all the actors that were in this movie A LOT, so that might make a big difference as well.
Coppola's digital age prediction is remarkable and even scary in it's accuracy considering that this was still the 70's! Not sure he realized the internet would be born and and the rise of personal communication devices would be in virtually everyone's hands, but I was just shocked hearing him make those observations and say communication revolution. Now, relatively cheap digital devices can make anyone a film maker, and though that has changed things, I have to disagree with Coppola's prediction about films getting better because of it. In my opinion the digital age has ruined cinematography and this was becoming obvious to me at about the mid 80's. Gone today are the true grit movies of the 60's and 70's where things were filmed on location for realism and where necessary a stunt man was used for a humanly possible and conceivable feat. Now everything is green screen and over the top CGI graphics that try to pass as realism. I miss creativity and the 70's, and I hardly watch films anymore because your choices are either full out special effects movies with a weak story, or quickly thrown together films, be it comedy or romance that look like made for television specials.
Yes..the first nail in Cinema's coffin was when the first idiots thought that digital video cameras would be the best thing to start shooting movies on. Disaster. Started around 1996 with something called Windhorse...Now, 22 years later...cinema..and film criticism, is virtually dead...
Amen! You read my mind. I feel the same way. I can't remember the last time I went to a movie theater. Now I spend my time searching out old movies pre- 2000's on dvd that I never seen before.
YES, SOOO TRUE, NO NONSENSE IN THOSE DAYS LIKE SOME NUT WHO WALKED ON STAGE & SLAPPED THE HOST IN FRONT OF THE WORLD TO WATCH . LIKE HE COULDN'T COMPOSE HIMSELF & KEEP HIS DIGNIYT!!!. NO CLASS!! SOOO SAD😢
Yeah, real genius. It takes a self indulgent, egotistical, retard of a director to draw out a wedding scene and meaningless banter to an hour and a fucking half. There is nothing genius about how torturously boring and disinteresting the beginning of Deer Hunter was.
The 51st Oscar telecast was the first one for longtime Oscar set designer Roy Christopher, who, along with longtime friend and fellow Oscar set designer Ray Klausen, are the best Oscar set designers of all-time!
Only The Deer Hunter is Cimino's masterpiece while Heaven's Gate is not, and that latter film was the last straw for Transamerica, which was forced to sell United Artists to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1981.
He (Cimino) was the total artist, not afraid to experiment or take risks. thus his downfall in Hollywood. Their simply will never be another director like this man. R.I.P
Each to their own; in recent times Heaven's Gate has, for many, grown very much in respectability; for some it is a masterpiece; and even the most generally accepted 'masterpiece' will have its detractors (you're on You Tube; you should know this by now, LOL !!!) :-))))))) ...
persona non grata the Apocalypse Now full disclosure edition has lots of lots of great extras. Every recent release with 3 discs has those, including the great stealbook by zavvi And yeah Coppola said it himself in one of the interviews
Coppola invited Bill Graham to the Oscars. Graham was eating cookies. Before he went on stage, Coppola grabbed a cookie from his stash. Graham's said, "No! Not that one!" Coppola said he felt weird going on stage presenting and didn't know why. Turned out the cookie was laced with Marijuana. That explains his going off script.
MY GOD THIS IS SO HARD FOR ME TO WATCH JOHN WAYNE IS MY HERO KNOWING THIS IS NOT LONG BEFORE HE DIED JUST BREAKS MY HEART HE IS SO MISSED AND THEY DO NOT MAKE THEM LIKE HIM ANYMORE SADLY 🙏
John Wayne here visibil afected by terminal cancer. He died two months later. Emotional moments. John Wayne was (in my opinion) most best actor in all time. He played perfect in beautiful movies like: Stagecoach, Angel and the Bad Man, 3 Goodfathers, Red River, Hondo, The Searchers, Rio Bravo, The Man Who Kill Liberty Vallance, McLintock, El Dorado, Rio Lobo, Rio Grande, The Sons of Katie Elder ,The War Wagon, True Grit, Chisum, Big Jake, The Cowboys,The Train Robbers, Brannigan, Rooster Cogburn, The Shootist, Big Jake, Cahill U.S. Marshal etc. R.I.P Big John
+Doru Steaua (Bucuresti) - Best actor in all time? He was pretty much a one trick pony, playing craggy cowboys or military types. Watch The Conqueror and tell me that's good acting. His acting is generally not good, as wooden as Pinocchio's. He was a prolific actor, I'll give you that.
Ali MacGraw looks absolutely spectacular here; as good as she has ever looked! Wayne was extremely debilitated; I read that he was so thin that he wore a wet suit under the tux to fill our his frame.
Because he was in The Conqueror (1956) that was filmed miles near a nuclear test site in Utah which resulted most of the cast and crew including John Wayne, Susan Hayward and Agnes Moorehead to die from cancer.
Beat me to it! "Every time he comes here, he's got no knife, he's got no jacket, he's got no pants, he's got no boots! All he does is carry that gun around like John Wayne! What's that gonna do for you? That ain't gonna do you any good."
He died of stomach cancer but years earlier had a lung removed due to lung cancer. He would get very winded while making his last few of movies. Directors worked with him to make sure he was ok to proceed during production. His last movie the Shootist you could really hear him breathing hard a lot and it wasn't acting.
While I respected the late John Wayne very much for the great body of work he made under John Ford's direction, it must have been incredibly ironic for the man who starred in the right-wing propaganda film that supported us going to war in Vietnam -- 'The Green Berets' -- to present the Best Picture Oscar to 'The Deer Hunter', which, like no other Vietnam-related movie, really displayed the psychological damage done to the young men who enlisted out of a sense of patriotism to fight in a war that our government had no winning strategy for. Incredibly acted and directed, 'The Deer Hunter' remains an emotionally overwhelming American classic. If only director Michael Cimino could have made another film to equal its quality.
Actually The Deer Hunter is very pro American it shows the effects of the war on a group of men from a small town in Pennsylvannia and depicts the Vietnamese as evil.
Although I did'nt much care for his politics - the level of strength and courage that this took for Wayne to appear is rightly celebrated. He was in great pain from his cancer but refused additional painkillers so as not to appear groggy. He insisted on walking down the staircase even though his hips were very weak and he had to wear a wetsuit under his tuxedo to keep them in place.
Horror films weren’t very respected back then by major awards. Few like The Exorcist, Jaws and The Omen got Academy Award nominations and wins. Carpenter would never have been considered for a director nomination for Halloween. His best chance would have been a nomination for Original Score.
Wayne personally participated in the McCarthy era witch hunt that resulted in dozens of lives of really talented people being ruined. He was also a stanch supporter of the Vitenam War.
Kenya Robinson AND - he was racist even after the Civil Rights Movement. I'll leave you with this quote from him, from his Playboy interview in 1971: "I believe in white supremacy, until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people ... I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from [the Native Americans] ... Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves"
+Culprit LA Well the Playboy interview in '71 I already knew about and being for white supremacy is not so good. Speaking about the Native Americans selfishly keeping their is pretty crazy too but on the other hand I'll leave you with this question that my Dad asks all the time "If you're not strong enough to hold on to something? Should you keep it?
He made the world a better place, cleaner place. Dead fascists made the world a better place, cleaner place. John Wayne made the world a better place, cleaner place, when he died. But don't worry. You will see him again soon in Hell.
45 years later John Wayne is still around as the legacy he left in film continues. There are two people I would like to have met and John Wayne is second to Jesus. Even though I never met him personally I consider him a friend as I have been watching his movies for 60 years now beginning from the cradle as both my parents were John Wayne fans as well.

At some point, you have to show some contrition and acknowledge how wrong our heroes were and still are for marginalizing minorities. There must be accountability if we are to ever move beyond the race barrier.
When the Oscars still had class and integrity
John Wayne was an American treasure. I grew up on his movies. Wish we had more actors like him today!
This is why RUclips is so worthwhile! Taking us to a time when "effort" was the
watchword and excellence its outcome. I remember the original TV showing and
the sadness of witnessing what was to be the final Oscar appearance of The Duke.
I'm pretty sure that viewers of that year's show who were John Wayne fans were crying that night. They knew that that was the last they'd ever see of him, I'm sure.
I heard he went right from here to the hospital. My parents and I always watched this thing back then. I'm 60 and they're long gone, so is the Duke and his country. Haven't watched the Oscars in at least 35 yrs.
I had a chance to meet John Wayne not long before he died. I wish I meet him now. He lived right across the bay from me back then. The "Duke"
What a slew of legends on the stage at the end to greet the Duke reminds me of Ted Williams being greeted on the field by the MLB All-Stars at that game years ago. Overwhelming!!
John Wayne looks so frail here, He is sadly missed by many people! A true gentleman
God bless John Wayne!and man 1978 was a great year for films.
The Deer Hunter is my all time favorite flick. I've watched the DVD of it nearly a 1/2 dozen times and it still affects me the same way it did the first time I saw it. Best movie of all time! R.I.P. to all of the actors and other who are no longer with us. God bless them all.
Man, you must enjoy watching paint dry and grass grow. Hell, I'd rather count grains of sand than watch the first hour and a half of that crap.
@@RBunks92 you probably weren't alive or old enough to appreciate that movie if you feel that way about it. That was "my generation" that was fighting over in Veit Nam, some of the guys I went to high school never made it back, so you probably view that movie much differently then I do.
Obviously Coppola had just traveled back in time from the future because he nailed the digital revolution. The man is a genius.
He was also high on Marijuana thanks to eating one of Bill Graham's cookies.
@@rockhero2274 Really ? And does it make beard's itch ?
@@heathstjohn6775 Yes
@@d.a.thorndike8772 I can only watch old movies :)
Coppola's prediction was much funnier considering he was high off of his ass while he was on stage
You see kids, amazing things happen when you’re stoned.
The days when the Academy Awards were exciting to watch. Miss those days.
so very true
YES, SOOO TRUE, NO NONSENSE IN THOSE DAYS LIKE SOME NUT WHO WALKED ON STAGE & SLAPPED THE HOST IN FRONT OF THE WORLD TO WATCH . LIKE HE COULDN'T COMPOSE HIMSELF & KEEP HIS DIGNIYT!!!. NO CLASS!! SOOO SAD😢
RIP Micheal Cimino. He was a real genius but Hollywood doesn't understand his talent.
No, not really. He was pretentious and overly indulgent.
@@Mojavegreen He BECAME like that after DEER HUNTER. May explain why everything he did after that was crap.
@@Mojavegreen a bit rough
@@TRINZINI no not everything
Yeah, real genius. It takes a self indulgent, egotistical, retard of a director to draw out a wedding scene and meaningless banter to an hour and a fucking half. There is nothing genius about how torturously boring and disinteresting the beginning of Deer Hunter was.
The Deer Hunter is Gold.
The films in 1979 were outstanding
👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Wow. John Wayne conversing with the Hollywood stars and friends for the last time. It feels like an end to a movie.
The 51st Oscar telecast was the first one for longtime Oscar set designer Roy Christopher, who, along with longtime friend and fellow Oscar set designer Ray Klausen, are the best Oscar set designers of all-time!
What a better way to close out the award show 😔🙏🏻 God Bless You John The Duke Wayne forever a Favorite in My Family
John Wayne was a great actor and american Idol RIP John wayne
The Deer Hunter, next is Heaven's Gate. Two polarising but great masterpieces of Michael Cimino!
Only The Deer Hunter is Cimino's masterpiece while Heaven's Gate is not, and that latter film was the last straw for Transamerica, which was forced to sell United Artists to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer in 1981.
I know. But these two films were so contrasting, just like black and white
He (Cimino) was the total artist, not afraid to experiment or take risks. thus his downfall in Hollywood. Their simply will never be another director like this man. R.I.P
Martin Sorenson We should hope so!
Each to their own; in recent times Heaven's Gate has, for many, grown very much in respectability; for some it is a masterpiece; and even the most generally accepted 'masterpiece' will have its detractors (you're on You Tube; you should know this by now, LOL !!!) :-))))))) ...
RIP Michael Cimino and the Duke
Coppola was stoned here. He inadvertently ate one of Bill Graham's pot cookies.
yeah it's hilarious knowing this! The Apocalypse Now extras are great
what are you serious?? REALLY?? Also, how can I get the AN extras?
persona non grata the Apocalypse Now full disclosure edition has lots of lots of great extras. Every recent release with 3 discs has those, including the great stealbook by zavvi
And yeah Coppola said it himself in one of the interviews
Did the woman (can't think of who that is right now) standing next to him know? She kind of giggles at one point. Hell, was SHE high too?
If he is stoned then those must have been Alice B. Nostradamus cookies. He was pretty spot on with predication of the digital age.
MY GOD THIS IS SO HARD FOR ME TO WATCH JOHN WAYNE IS MY HERO KNOWING THIS IS NOT LONG BEFORE HE DIED JUST BREAKS MY HEART HE IS SO MISSED AND THEY DO NOT MAKE THEM LIKE HIM ANYMORE SADLY 🙏
the first time my dad ever cried...Seeing John Wayne near death
Take a shot every time Francis Ford Coppola scratches his beard
He was so skinny before he died
+alex kanyima, yes. i see
Norbert Klangschmied John Wayne IS A Republican
+Doru Steaua (Bucuresti) - Best actor in all time? He was pretty much a one trick pony, playing craggy cowboys or military types. Watch The Conqueror and tell me that's good acting. His acting is generally not good, as wooden as Pinocchio's. He was a prolific actor, I'll give you that.
:))) Go sleep. And YES. In my opinion 'THE DUKE' is best actor in all times. What your problem?
Ali MacGraw looks absolutely spectacular here; as good as she has ever looked! Wayne was extremely debilitated; I read that he was so thin that he wore a wet suit under the tux to fill our his frame.
Sadly John Wayne passed away 2 months later in June.
Because he was in The Conqueror (1956) that was filmed miles near a nuclear test site in Utah which resulted most of the cast and crew including John Wayne, Susan Hayward and Agnes Moorehead to die from cancer.
11 june 1979
He was a lot worse off then they knew then, a normal man probably wouldn't have had the strength to have done that show.
Fun fact: Mike mentions John Wayne in The Deer Hunter.
Beat me to it! "Every time he comes here, he's got no knife, he's got no jacket, he's got no pants, he's got no boots! All he does is carry that gun around like John Wayne! What's that gonna do for you? That ain't gonna do you any good."
All those people at the end to say hello and, unfortunately, to say goodbye...
what an awesome sight for an American Icon. RIP Duke.
Big Duke was dying from lung cancer in this vid.... :-(
ratso69ful Stomach Cancer
Actually Heaven's Gate is more powerful, if unfairly shat on by the critics.
Actually The Deer Hunter is very pro American it shows the effects of the war on a group of men from a small town in Pennsylvannia and depicts the Vietnamese as evil.
Thunderbolt and Lightfoot, as well as Year of the Dragon are thoroughly solid.
Supporting the War vs supporting the Green Berets is way off.
The irony was presenting Coming Home in the movies as Best picture. Starring Jane Fonda
Although I did'nt much care for his politics - the level of strength and courage that this took for Wayne to appear is rightly celebrated. He was in great pain from his cancer but refused additional painkillers so as not to appear groggy. He insisted on walking down the staircase even though his hips were very weak and he had to wear a wetsuit under his tuxedo to keep them in place.
is it me or does michael cimino kinda look like jon lovitz?
Not anymore.

John Wayne was a man. He worked hard too. Humble and proud and stood strong like men should learn you generation Z and millennials!
John Carpenter should have been nominated for Halloween, his directing on that film was brilliant!
the oscars for best score have repeatedly snubbed the scores we loved
Horror films weren’t very respected back then by major awards. Few like The Exorcist, Jaws and The Omen got Academy Award nominations and wins. Carpenter would never have been considered for a director nomination for Halloween. His best chance would have been a nomination for Original Score.
5:25 another legend whose height was but one of many attributes that made him stood out - Gregory Peck
The Deer Hunter, Cimino's finest hour. He never reached those heights again. Shame what happened to him
John Wayne was one of the best that ever was in the world of acting and film. A gentleman till the very end.
+Kenya Robinson he was a huge star but a bad actor and a terribly reactionary man. Sorry, respectfully disagree with you about him
Ok. Terribly reactionary? Can you explain that to me please?
Wayne personally participated in the McCarthy era witch hunt that resulted in dozens of lives of really talented people being ruined. He was also a stanch supporter of the Vitenam War.
Kenya Robinson
AND - he was racist even after the Civil Rights Movement.
Cool how the orchestra played Cimino on with the song Ca't Take my Eyes Off You, an homage to the classic pool table scene
