    Thanks LJ, what a helpful video. Yesterday I put my first extract brew down. Just did a cheapie, Wilko IPA augmented with Muntons Beer Kit Enhancer, Muntons Spraymalt and locally picked wild European wet hops (I’m living in UK). Didn't want to go all out with more extravagant ingredients because something is bound to go wrong. Also added my new Ispindel to the fermenter. Every 15 minute updates on temperature and Sg are plotted in my Brewfather
    software. Fermenting is progressing remarkably fast as it turns out.

      L John, after 33 days conditioning and I've been drinking it. What a surprise! Somewhat shocked that I've made my own beer and I'm well impressed. Not something I'd actively try and replicate, but perfectly drinkable. Proof of concept for my new microbrewery. Thanks for the steer LJ. I'm enthused.

    Big fan of the mangrove jacks, I all grain but do lay down some kits once in a while as keg fillers. Actually did the Coopers Stout just recently, added 1.5kg of Briess Dark LME and added some willamette hops. Currently sitting in the keg carbonating, cant wait to try it.
    Cheers

      This was 3 years ago....almost to the day.... but I did not do tasting video's back then. So no, there is no tasting vid for this brew, sorry. It was a decent drop though.

      It's all good Al, you will make beer. Take some knowledge into your next batch and it will be better beer.

    Hey LJ thanks for the vid as a rookie homebrewer in hotter climate, what yeast should i use for a lager if i cant keep the fermenting temperature below 20 degrees? Cheers.

    • @littlejohnsbrewing
      @littlejohnsbrewing  3 года назад

      you can go with a California Lager(Cal Common) yeast up to about 24°. Saison will work up to late 20's. Kviek works up to mid 30's. Saison and Kviek will impart varying flavours not associated with 'standard' beer but are enjoyed by many. Best option is to find a way to get the temps down.... you will not believe the improvement it will make to your beer.

      @@littlejohnsbrewing thanks for your input i can get 20-25 degrees but it sounds like i am gonna have spend some cash on an fermenter fridge which i really didnt want to do or have much room for.

    Hi John, seen many of your videos and been brewing kit beer's and kegging for a couple of years now, I have quite a few kit yeasts (kept in the fridge), can they be used for anything?

    • @littlejohnsbrewing
      @littlejohnsbrewing  3 года назад +1

      they can be used as nutrient, if you are doing a mash steep and boil or hop boil, throw it in the boil for a few minutes. If doing straight kits and sugar, throw them out.

    Hi bud just doing my first home brew wish I had of seen your vids first but anyhow live and learn. So I mixed up my brew added yeast which came with the tin it is a coopers stout. I started out with an sg of 1040 and unfortunately I know now a too high temp of 28 3 days in there was no bubbling so I was starting to get concerned I took another sg reading and it was 1010 what do you think have I stuffed my brew or should I just run with it thanks in advance

      Stout will hide some off flavours. Not ideal temps or enough yeast but it’s your first brew. Give it time to condition, 6 weeks at least. Put what you now know into your next brew. Yeast and temp are very important to get sorted.

    You say you had some light dry malt in the water on the stove and that you were going to explain why but either I missed it or you didn't say. May I please ask why you add the light dry malt?

    • @littlejohnsbrewing
      @littlejohnsbrewing  4 года назад +1

      The dry malt is just to help with hop utilisation(the amount of acids removed from the hops). It is better than just water.

      @@littlejohnsbrewing So the 5 minute hop boil in this video is for adding flavour/aroma, or is it for bitterness?

    • @littlejohnsbrewing
      @littlejohnsbrewing  4 года назад

      VK5IR yep, flavour and aroma. Very little bitterness

    Good video. Surprised it hasn't got more views. Found you via Aussie Home Brewers Facebook group. Just one question, if I don't get time to go to a LHBS is making a starter with the kit yeast just as good as a new dry sachet? I've done a few starters before with good results in terms of quick and active fermentations but I only used starters for liquid yeasts so far. Wanting to do an American Pale on the weekend. Already have a TC Bootmaker's PA in the garage.

    • @littlejohnsbrewing

      Cheers mate. Yes, you can make a starter with kit yeast. I certainly don't put it high on my list of recommended yeast choices, but it will get you out of a squeeze. My calculations say, 1 litre starter with 90gm LDM will get you around where you want to be.

      little john's brewing thanks for the info. I might post a follow up question on Facebook group as I have some harvested yeast in the fridge.
