Bloody hell! That was just in time, Matthias, thank you! I've got exactly the same task - building a 26" bandsaw wheel to replace the original on a huge "industrial grade" bandsaw. -I don't know what they were thinking about, but they made the top wheel out of a solid chunk of casting! It doesn't only weigh about 50 kg but actually rips apart thin blades while stopping because only the lower wheel has a brake!

Matthias, Please know you inspired me to make this. I am starting on it slowly, I finally tweaked my normal craftsman band saw to be able to cut but its really little. I never understood how the blade guide worked ever just did not make sense. Then I was watching a video , then all the sudden you showed a angle that made sense. I went to sleep that night thinking, wow if this works ill finally be able to cut thicker wood, and the blade wont wiggle. I went down stairs the next morning, tweaked it just like your home made one, first cut a flawless radius of 3' through 5/8' plywood, was pleased. Took that to some .5' maple did the same thing. So I was like hmm , if I fixed this, then is it possible I may be able to fix my radial arm saw? Well guess what that thing cuts true now. Its all from you matthias you have inspired me in so many ways so thank you so much. I am working on making a 2 door folding cabinet for all my tools to sit in. Then off to making this new band saw, then im using the band saw to help me make the 12" planner you made. :) If it all turns out ill make a video for you, showing my failure lol.

This is super cool and I love your videos. I am not sure why you would want to make the wheels hollow to make them lighter however. I have an industrial size bandsaw and it has huge cast iron wheels. Super heavy. The large mass of the wheels makes it very aggressive when cutting through large stock. This thing cuts through a 4x4 and doesn't even flinch or slow down because of the inertia of the wheels. The only downside is it takes a long time to start up and slow down because of this. Slow-down is alleviated with a foot brake though. Fill those suckers with concrete!!!

That was wonderful. I am glad you are back building. I wonder if you could have made a bandsaw with three wheels easier? I know it would be three wheel instead of two but they could be smaller. You could even use the ones from your smaller saws. With proper placement they would not even have to be the same size. I would imagine this as an equilateral triangle set up with the drive being furthest away from the blade. Unlimited in size if you have a long enough blade and can build a frame strong enough.

He made a previous video a while back called three wheeled bandsaws suck which covers why he sticks with two wheels. I seem to recall the main issue being aligning three wheels being considerably harder than two.

Mat- U've now made several versions of wooden wheels for machine use. How about a "Lessons Learned About Wood Wheels" vid, including hub placement, trueing circumference, trueing side to side, balancing... This would make a great expanded article IMO on Woodgears

Canvas sandbags work well for weights. 36” long and 3” in width. Evenly distributed weight, make excellent curves, easy to place.
