Filipinos are mostly very respectful and friendly especially to the foreigners they want you to be comfortable and feeling safe but don’t put guard down just respect their culture..
Thanks a lot Craig for your rich insight into the behaviour expected of foreigners visiting or coming to live in the Philippines. I can only hope that the people that come into our country can be as aware, respectful and as insightful as you. Bless your good heart.
Not Speaking Basic Filipino well Philippines has over 170 languages..and often its a totally different language when u travel to another of the over 7000 islands Main problem is if i go to Manila or cebu and try some Ilonggo/Hiligaynon (IloIlo) words there most people won't understad it..because they speak cebuano or tagalog or a broad local dialect etc Better to really learn simple Filipino english..that is something most English native speakers have problem with because they speak to fast and complicated to People and Thai is a asian 5 tone language where the TONE gives words different meanings, so ONE word can have many different meanings..like most other asian countrys
Spot on bro! Except for the "blessing" part. It's the elder's hand to the young one's forehead. Just saying so you avoid accidentally extending your hand to some elder's forehead and cause confusion. But that would be funny as hell! haha!
I had a wing mirror prang last year with a pedicab.. and apparently me hitting his pedicab with my wing mirror had broken all his rear lights, broken covers, bulbs and even caused a build up of rust and corrosion.. so I gave the guy P1000 just to keep me right
"Tell me, how could my little side mirror cause all that damage?" "Like a pebble you toss in a calm, small pond, the ripples travel across the whole surface and also all the way to the bottom..." "Ahhh, now I understand. Here's P1,000." 😃
Very true. Unfortunately my Scottish accent doesn't, we somewhat do the opposite. We have to accept that especially when speaking a foreign language pronunciation will always be a little off 👍
Foreigners will soon discover that Filipino hospitality is experienced as a 3-stage process: 1. Yesterday you were a STRANGER. 2. Today you are a FRIEND 3. Tomorrow you will be FAMILY.
As a Filipino, I disagree with the last statement that Filipinos will always help their Kababayan (fellow Filipino) in case of conflict. Filipinos in general tend to side with the underdog. If they see a Filipino being abusive or disrespectful whether to a lowly janitor or to a well-dressed tourist, they will always slam the abuser. However, if it is a foreigner that abuses a Filipina, the retribution can be swift and severe - even death. So, you are right in pointing out that in the Philippines, it is easy to have a good time. Just be friendly, respectful, and smile. Look haughty and proud and you will be laid low.
I was in The Philippines 🇵🇭 as recent as 2022. Not in this episode but important for me to say. Tagalog. That is more important in Metro Manila. You should add ➕ the local language , which depemds qhere you are. I traveled to Legazpi and spoke some Tagalog. But, the locals spoke to me in English. Then, they told me that they preferred to speak Bicol, their local language. A 2nd example. If you are in Cebu Island, birthplace of singer Morissette Amon, Bisayan is the preferred language. Music. 1 Feel free to sing Karaoke 🎤. But, do not sing My Way. Singing it poorly may send you into a coffin ⚰. But, you may sing It's My Life as popularized by Bon Jovi, which refers to My Way in the chorus. 2 I will be positive 😌 ➕ here. Get familiar with OPM. Morissette Amon is the most popular singer there. Arnel Pineda is 2nd. You can gain friends by listening to the many OPM musicians. Many sing in the Wishbus, GMA and many singing shows. Music is 1 if the mist inportant fine arts there.
Hey up mate how’s it going so far here in the Philippines? You ever been around the tagaytay area nice place to visit cool breeze looking over teal volcano
I wanted to go to Tagaytay but last minute went a little further to Sabang at Puerto Gallera instead. It's definitely on the bucket list, it looks great 😊🇵🇭
@@Craig_in_Asia Yes mate many nice coffee shops etc nice places to chill and watch the world go by so to speak. Lucky for me we are only 15 mins from there with no traffic Are you staying in Manila
It's more than ok to say you don't like some foods . Tagalog isn't very easy to learn at all .or maybe it's just me and all the many other foreigners I've met here . Be respectful to all unless they are disrespectful to you .just like anywhere . Easy 🙂
Concerning elders, nothing is ever forced or beaten into anyone. That would be abusive and not even natural. Seniority is revered because that means you can be yourself at any age and get respect because you will always be "Manong/Lola" etc. That means that you can be vastly different from your grandparents and still bond all the same, no toxic generational wars and all this. Concerning "Kabayan", I understand Eurocentricity and Enlightenment principles of objectivity. That's important but people can’t just start acting like they are God and operate under the pretense that they understand things as they aught to. Just be happy being wrong! There is no shame in that. How can you learn, otherwise? Sinigang is not even a soup. It is something you put in your rice to make it taste better. The understanding is just not there right now but with well-intentioned videos like these, it will get there.
Just a correction, Tagalog is not an official language but it is FILIPINO, and together with ENGLISH they are the two official languages of the Philippines. Though FILIPINO is based loosely in tagalog which is the language used in the National Capital Region (Metro Manila), still what was approved in congress as the country's official languages are stated as FILIPINO and ENGLISH. And FILIPINO is comprised of all languages in the country not just Tagalog.
@@Craig_in_Asia Yeah I just can't help voicing out.. since for a long time the heated almost never ending debates in the past by congressmen, on which among our languages should be considered the official national language of the Philippines together with English.. Tagalog, although spoken in our capital Manila and nearby provinces, couldn't win over the Visayans, Ilonggos, Ilocanos, Bicolanos, Warays, etc.. until they come upon a solution to make the national language 'FILIPINO' (PILIPINO locally) comprised of all spoken languages in the country.. meaning Tagalog can't claim the sole distinction of being the national language of the country. But anyway in truth, what is being studied in schools since elementary on the Pilipino subject.. is indeed tagalog lol! So everywhere in the Philippines people can also understand and speak tagalog...
@@pingyu5141 It's the exact same thing. There isn't a single Filipino word that isn't part of the modern Tagalog lexicon. They're virtually interchangeable.
@@Harzach-Hardcastle7685 You are years late, the debates on the matters in congress had already been concluded... they can't just make 'Tagalog' as the Philippine official languages together with English, because the rest of the lawmakers from other areas of the country are also pushing for their own. In the end they compromised that all Philippine languages would have a compilation into one as 'FILIPINO' then considered as the national language. And that's how the Official Philippine languages - ENGLISH and FILIPINO came to be. If you have a complain with that, you let Philippine Congress hear you. But of course tagalog is the more popularly known abroad, as most filipinos understand and speak Tagalog as this is the language being taught in schools under the subject PILIPINO ( the local term for PILIPINO ).
@@pingyu5141 I appreciate the reply. But you are missing the point. I don't disagree with Filipino being the official language. That is a fact, and I am completely fine with that. I was just pointing out that modern-day Tagalog and the official Filipino language are exactly the same. Can you identify one word in the official Filipino language that is not already part of the Tagalog language?
Avoid confrontational question like, "Why are you good to me?" Why did you pay my bill?" Why are you asking personal question?" For Filipinos ears, these could be offensive. If you are uncomfortable of questions, pretend not to hear them then politely excuse yourself. The best escape is, " I am going to use the bathroom." Its fine not to go back.
I just want to add another DON'T here in the Philippines if you're a foreigner. Do Not Join in Any Political Rallies and Protests, because if you do, you can get blacklisted and most likely deported. Just be Non-Partisan and enjoy your travel in PH as a tourist.
