My parents were also serious alcoholics. My father drank himself to death. He died of liver cancer on his 60th birthday. He couldn't do without alcohol until the end.
As a nurse, I have always loved working with addicts of all types. Even with alcoholics in the acute stage of delirium tremens (which was much more common 30 years ago than it is today). It gave me deep satisfaction to take the best possible care of my patients during this dangerous phase.
But looking after active alcoholics at home (in outpatient care)?
I've told each of my bosses that sending me there isn't a good idea for either the patient or me. The trauma of my childhood runs far too deep. Technically, I would provide these people with professional care, but without emotional involvement.
By the way, I always joked that, as the child of addicts, I don't have an addict as a partner... haha, little did I know... In any case, this joke really fell on my feet.
And just out of curiosity, you don't have to reveal such a private and sensitive detail - have you, as an adult, found yourself in a relationship with an addict?

Not that I know of but you know how life is... :) On a more serious note, I do find children of addicts often wind up dating/marrying one as well. The cycle is real. - Mr. Jay
