To start decluttering, I empty out the space, decide what I want to keep, then evaluate the unchosen items for decluttering, donation, keep, or trash. Flat surfaces attract clutter like a magnet. The best way i’ve found to reduce this is to have a designated use for each flat surface. Either it’s for decor and ornaments, books, plants or a designated empty space. Or it’s for bathroom or kitchen items only (preferably as few as possible).
    The other thing I found is if people constantly keep moving things around in a room, this can confuse children. So the best way to get children to be tidy, especially young children is to set up consistent systems that are as unchanging as possible and stick to them; reinforcing positive behaviour in putting things away.
    This is backed up by studies that show children with spatial awareness problems, colour blindness, ADHD or autism like consistency. They often do not thrive as well in houses where parents constantly change rooms or furniture around; and alter systems over and over again.

    I kept my brothers dog when my brother passed away. He was age 10 at that time and I wish I thought of doggies diapers but instead, I cleaned up a lot of doggie pee. Thankfully we don’t have carpets. Teddy, the dog, passed away a few weeks ago at age 14 and wow, do I miss him. He was a constant companion, loved people and loved coming with me every drive. He was also a connection with my brother since my brother loved him so much for his first 10 years and wanted me to have him when he could no longer take care of him.

      Such a sweet story of your brother’s dog. Sorry for your loss. Maybe adopt another dog in his honor ❤We inherited my mom’s little dog when she passed and she peed and we cleaned up a lot too. We loved her anyway and it was comforting to have her since she was loved by my mom. She lived until 17 years old.

    Hi Erica ❤ thank you so much for your "Simple System" video, Why oh Why had I not figured this out myself? Tackling one room a day has been amazing for me, it has stopped me getting overwhelmed and over tired. I'm 68yrs old and I finally feel like my house is coming together nicely thanks to you, I don't normally send comments but I just needed to show my appreciation for your time and effort in doing your videos. Thanks again Erica from Julie accross the water in Wales Britain.

    We keep the new trash bags in the bottom of the garbage bin so they are always close by and don’t need another storage spot. We also keep a bin near the door where the kids are responsible to put their library books when they’re done. Since they’re older they keep the ones they are still using in their bedrooms. Love that we have the ability to log on to our library account and see the books we have out so none get missed!

    I do appreciate these smaller tweak videos - the maintaining of spaces already decluttered, organised, and decorated - they are so pragmatic and show that it's and ongoing task - especially when you're the curator for the rest of the family's items 😊 Also - I absolutely adore that basket - that is a nice basket! And puppup is overwhelmingly cute - he's a little darling ☺

    Ive been watching you from the start, and I have evolved/devolved to a very similar system that works for me.
    I choose one room a day and walk into it. I look around and name one thing I could clean, one thing I could remove and one thing that annoys me. Then I go about fixing those things. This has been great because my motivation level and energy ebbs add flows - sometimes I pick big things to tackle but most of the time I pick little things. The next day I chose anther room. If I miss a day I just pick up where I left off. An example might be - in the bedroom - Clean - dust the side tables, Remove - go through sock draw and remove any extra socks, Annoy - oil the squeaky door hinge. After doing this most days for three months my house is pretty much visitor ready at all times. (This is after several major declutters and a regular Friday bathroom clean, and weekend laundry routine.)

    • @jennyjenkins877
      @jennyjenkins877 3 месяца назад +1

      That's a great system of balancing tasks! I find that I get focused on just one thing at a time, like just decluttering the house and then I'll get on a cleaning kick for a while and later turn my attention to doing home improvements but it's wise to do a little of everything each day. My basic philosophy is to always leave a room in better shape than when I entered it though.

    I also have a pawsome grandpa who starts dripping when he is too excited, I discovered washable diapers for him and LOVE them! Maybe look them up, they come in adorable patterns, and you can also insert inlays if you don’t want to wash them all the time - but that still generates a humongous less mountain of waste.
    Just an idea 🙂 You are a good friend to me for very many years now, it feels good to be able to give back a tip to you 😃

    I brought home a bunch of my mom's cookbooks back in 2019. I don't use the cookbooks I have. I am missing one, "The I Hate to Cook Book" by Peg Bracken. I have handwritten recipes in the back. I limited what I took. She had all of Jeff Smith's recipe books. I did bring home Campbell's Soup recipe books from the 1950s or 60s. So far, they have not left the box they were packed in nearly 5 years ago.
    I purchased a shelf tree to set on the bookcase in my dining room that houses the cookbooks. I can put the shelf tree on top of the "cool" looking ones.
    When my husband comes home for the month of June, we can go through the cookbooks and donate the ones (or trash: does anyone want a Campbell's soup recipe from 60+ years ago? They could probably find one online.) that someone might like.
