My ‘22 Tucson hybrid SAVED my life. I was driving home to AZ from spending a month in MN. Decided to spend only 1 night on the road. I had been driving 16 hours the 2nd day when I started heading down the 2 lane mountain road at 2am in AZ. I had the speed/lane assist options engaged as I followed a semi. I was really tired, and he was only going 45 so I started to feel less stressed. Since the lane assist was working perfectly and the speed assist was keeping me 3 car lengths behind I must have dozed off. All I remember is the Tucson automatically slamming on the brakes and looking up to see the semi trailer skidding, tires smoking heading toward the 3 ft stone wall separating the road from the cliff edge. He missed the wall by a couple of feet, I stopped 2 car lengths from the wall. I looked over to see what must have been at least a thousand foot drop off to the valley below. Neither one of us would have made it if we’d gone over. I continued to follow him until he took the runaway truck exit due to his burned out brakes. I made it home at 4am, concluding my nightmare drive down to the PHX east valley. This is the first time I’ve written about this. Feel a bit sick to my stomach actually… My Tucson hybrid is an amazing vehicle. It averages 37 mpg, is quiet, very comfortable with all available options and SAFE. If I had been driving my old ‘11 CRV, I wouldn’t be writing this.
I got my Tuscon last week, limited trim. It is such a fantastic ride. Everything is so easy to use. I had no trouble at all with the touch screen. You don't have to peck at volume control, you just press and hold the icon. I mainly use steering wheel vol control, so easy. So far, I am absolutely loving this vehicle. Such a smooth ride. I love the overall shape and the lights, makes it stand out for sure.
Also, in our Tuscon you can mute the entertainment system by pressing the volume toggle on the steering wheel. It's probably the same in the Sportage, but haven't seen one. I use the steering wheel for all radio inputs anyway.
Slight corrections about the Tucson Hybrid. The panoramic sunroof is also on the Luxury trim in Canada (Also a Hybrid) The Luxury trim has a physical volume knob :) and a slightly smaller display (Guess what I own)
The "Luxury" trim in Canada is the equivalent of the "SEL Convenience" trim in the US. A Panoramic Sunroof, wireless Android Auto, and knobs on the stereo... guess which one I own?
The Tucson Front end and back looks better...especially at night. I don't care for any of Kia's designs...maybe the Telluride. Good comparison review! 👍🏼
It's always odd to me how these reviews spend so much time talking about really silly aesthetic quirks of each vehicle. Rather than focusing on more important driving notes and differences. I've driven both vehicles and something my partner and I both noticed was the limited visibility from the drivers seat in the KIA versus the tuscon. The A pillar in the kia is much bulkier and hard to see around and the rear window is very squashed making it hard to see out of using the rear view mirror. Also the rear headrest obstruct the view in the kia. And the door panels come up higher in the kia. Overall the kia made us feel like we were sitting IN the vehicle where the hyundai made us feel more on top of the car and thus more aware and in control. Reviewers should really spend more time on these kinds of features and notes rather than bullet points that any customer could find on the respective website for each vehicle, or by looking at pictures of the cars.
Huge points! when I went with a Class B van RV vs a Class C it was because of the feeling of being up ABOVE the traffic/view rather than DOWN IN it. And Visibility is a huge deciding factor in my mind. Planning on test driving both of these vehicles (both 2023) this weekend. Thanks for your comments.
7:12 The Panoramic sunroof should be available in both the Ultimate/Premium trim AND the SEL Convenience trim (I believe its the "Luxury" trim in Canada)... Both the Luxury trim in Canada and here in the US, the Panoramic Sunroof is STANDARD in all SEL Convenience Hybrid Tucsons (in addition to our Premium trim). Another interesting fact, the "lower" SEL Convenience trim has wireless Android/Apple carplay and KNOBS on the infotainment system! To be perfectly honest, kinda getting tired of every car review site having some sort of law that they can only test the MOST EXPENSIVE TRIM of any car model. It's an unrealistic evaluation of what MOST people buy (ie: NOT the top trim) and if they'd lower their standards for five seconds, they might even notice lower trims offering better features, especially at a savings... like panoramic sunroofs, knobs on the stereo and wireless android auto... but nope, another blind review of the top trim, not even realizing what is offered on lower trims.
Nice review. BTW, you know that you can also adjust the volume on the steering wheel?!! However, I agree, that having a centered knob available is a much better design - especially for the passenger! There is a tendency for automakers to require too much driver attention to these newer dash flat screens. A heads-up display should be an option on all these flat screen-installed cars. Keep the driver looking towards the road. I was also a bit disappointed that you didn't give some more detailed technical discussion about the Hybrid system in this car. Battery size, location, and performance vs. the gas-only version. Keep up the good work.
Test drove a Tuscon hybrid. Good drivetrain. Decent interior, though too much piano black. Don't care for the exterior, looks like an edgier Rav 4, which I also don't care for. Test drove a non hybrid Sportage, liked the styling in and out, and the quiet comfortable ride, but the drivetrain was meh at best. Ordered a Sportage EX hybrid a couple months ago, expecting to get it in the next few weeks. You get most of the good stuff for nearly $7000 less than the SX,, and not much more expensive than the non hybrid version.
Did you get your Sportage EX Hybrid? Do you like it? I came to the same conclusion you did, EX Hybrid gives me power and enough features for less $$ so I'm leaning that way.
@@Dash277 yes, a few months ago. I'm liking it. If I was in the US, I probably would have gotten the EX Premium model, but we don't get that in Canada. But then the US EX model doesn't get the adaptive cruise for some reason. Low beam headlights are a bit marginal, but the automatic high beams work well.
Is there a difference in noise level between the two cars at 70 mph? Is there a difference from the 8 gear transmission compared to the 6 gear transmission in the Sportage?
I had trouble getting any attention from my Kia dealer, finally tried the Tucson, I’m buying the PHEV because with the $5k federal subsidy it goes down to the same time price as the hybrid and why not. I will have to wait a year though….
You HAVE a volume knob on the steering wheel as well as a mute button AND you have a physical volume knob on the SEL Convenience model with the Hyundai with the 8-inch touchscreen as well as wireless android auto for several thousand less in price
We are in this market for a car for my wife. We have test driven both and agree that the Sportage is the car for us. The price difference helped make a hard choice a little easier. Hoping to pick an Ex up this week. They are hard to find. and the "Market adjustment" gouging is almost enough to make you not want to buy either. Some places are $5k above Msrp. We are trying to get a deal for just 1000 above Msrp.
I am trying to decide between these 2 Hybrid vehicles. 🤔 Plenty to love, and not love in both. I wish the Tucson would raise the rear turn signal lights because they are way too low and may not be safely visible to surrounding drivers. I do love the diffusing air/heat vents. The Kia offers a heated windshield which is fantastic for Ontario winters. I've seen a beautiful Navy/Light grey interior in the Kia but I'm not sure if it's available in the Canadian Hybrid?? Completely agree. Anytime I see cars with rear blinkers so low that I can’t see it when I’m driving my Tucson, I wonder how a semi will see it. Completely unsafe.
17 mins and not one test / comment about the handling over rough roads. Motor Trend says the Tuscan has a stiff / firm ride. Shame you 2 didnt take it over some bumps or comment on how the ride is over bumps, gravel, potholes etc. Not that i'll watch youre videos again, but for others, please make sure to add that into your test.
I enjoy the interior and exterior looks of both vehicles. I would however be a little wary of the turbo/hybrid combination and the long term reliability. Also, it will be interesting to see real world gas numbers. Push a turbo too much and gas mpg drop.
So because of this factor, steer clear of both of these vehicles? The RAV4 does feature a naturally aspirated engine but is impossible to get nowadays.
The Blue (base) hybrid trim, the one with the smaller touch screen that also happens to be wireless, has physical volume and tuning wheels. I DO agree, however, that the rotary shift knob would have been a better choice than the buttons. But overall not a big deal. The Diffuse function is an unexpected hit. I do prefer the Kia's main headlight design, but the front end of the Tucson, with those angular, swooping, spaced-out driving lights, are magnitudes more distinctive. To me, the Kia looks much more generic overall than the Tucson.
Quite shocking how at the end you came to the wrong conclusion. Kia looks like 6 year old would get a crayon. Also rear of a car is so dull, that you can claerly point where their budget has ended. They understood that kia has a lower base price but never backed it why it is that. Cause HyundaiKia group is open about that, Hyundai is more premium, has a better build, uses slightly better materials. From practicality standpoint has a bigger boot space as well.
I owned 2022 Tucson Hybrid "Ultimate" and not happy nor satisfied, a month after I received my Tucson, Hyundai Canada sent me a recall letter called Campaign Service C0448 and the dealer I bought my SUV told me the Hybrid battery is not covered by warranty even though I added extended warranty called "PREMIUM PLUS" that cost me extra $3,759 dollars that did not give me any protection!! so why should I trust Hyundai brand or Korean product?
The hybrid is great because you use the electric motor in the city but that switches off once to use the highway greetings from southern Ontario Canada

I was born when LBJ was President... I need my knobs on the dash (fortunately the SEL Convenience/Luxury trim has that and wireless Android Auto... sorry, but the top-trim is not the top trim, it's one of the worst).
Not impossible, but you'll have to wait. Hyundai hasn't released the '23 Tuscon hybrid yet, but the Sportages are trickling in. I ordered one in mid June and it's arriving sometime in the next few weeks.

I'm pleasantly surprised because I figured it would be a couple more months yet. Unfortunately it's difficult to get a clear answer from Kia or their dealers as to delivery timelines, which apparently can vary quite a bit from dealer to dealer. I think they're as surprised as me that they've got on for me already, because they really had no idea when exactly they would get some.

I've had the Tucson since July 2021. Made three long trips each averaging 745 miles (about 1200 km). Still loving it!
The little hook on the back of the seat is for phone cable/ charging cords so people won't trip entering or leaving the vehicle

KIA has heated front windshield and a spare tire. Those two features matter greatly in my area and taste.
That spare tire is the main thing for me, otherwise I prefer the looks of the Tucson. But the Sportage isn't too shabby either.

I am 63 and have never lived knobs like flat touch controls since i was introduced to them lost so many buttons when growing up

I just got my Kia EX AWD hybrid and I love it! Lower trim than SX. Love that they have a less expensive option for more bang for the buck!

The knob thing or its lack thereof is a trivial thing. Tesla cars lack knobs, but I don’t hear anyone whining about it.

The real world driving experience is about at 37 mpg if you’re not exceeding 70 mph. Maintain 80 -90, it drops as low as 27 mpg
Which one is quieter on highway cruising? That’s what I mostly care about.

The powertrains are not identical. It is obvious that the color of the coolant is completely different: pink versus blue
