I'm surprised they never had a diesel option in North America. Well the Cherokee (XJ) had the 2.1 Renault J8S for awhile the Wrangler as far as I know never got one, it might've here in the UK and Europe but I think they've only just starting getting them in NA in the last 10 years or so. Our 1995 RHD Jeep Cherokee here in Scotland had the 2.5 VM Motori 425 Turbodiesel which I know it had it's problems but it was generally regarded as a decent Italian diesel in it's day, why the American's never took advantage of the extra fuel economy of it I'll never know probably because petrol was soo cheap. Yeah we had some 4 liter petrol's too and I know that's widely praised as a bomb proof and powerful engine but it's just something that NA never really managed to shake off hating diesels after the poor GM/Olds 350 diesel mess. By the way great video really enjoyed it.
First time watching this, but I just bought my 1st Jeep 5 months ago.03X. Was never too into mechanics, but since I got the Jeep,it got me steady learning about the Engine,Suspension,Troubleshooting, etc. If you don’t have a Jeep, then set that as a goal and get one.lol. Still happy about it.
Got this on VHS tape from the dealer on Oct. 09, 2003 when the Shale Green Metallic Jeep TJ Sport 4.0L 5-speed was purchased off the showroom floor w/o a test drive or even sitting in it...the Jeep was that cool! BTW, still have it & it's almost at 200,000 miles=take care of the AMC 4.0L~>it'll take care of you!
Bought my 2002 TJ new, no options. No radio, no air conditioning, no carpets, no back seat. Soft Top. Last 5 years or so have had issues getting into reverse. Will try your clutch advice next time. I received the video, when I bought it. I think I accidentally turned it in at Blockbuster in 2006. Nice to watch it again.
Maybe people owning used Jeeps with missing gaskets and poorly connected seals from improperly raising the top is the reason for all the reports of leaking Also...look at how clean these TJs are 😍 Also...I’m so glad it’s easier to remove tops on JLs
My parents used to have a 2002 Jeep. It was their second one. They used to have a 1983 CJ-7 Jeep. My father got that one in early 90’s. I remembered lifting the hard top off of the CJ-7 Jeep.
Boy I appreciate the video. I just bought my first jeep, a 2006 LJ unlimited and the owners manual left a lot to be desired. I'm one of those that needs to be shown and I understand better than just reading about it. Thanks.
das hasguns Depends on what's important to you. For me, these things were important - #1 more room behind the back seat, #2 smoother ride, #3 wanted something more "unique/rare".
I purchased my TJ new in 2000. Since I didn't own a VCR player I never had the opportunity to watch this video until now. I was cleaning out a closet and shot away the original VCR tape last week. Became curious had found this video. 👍😀👌
A guy just bought a 2005 and got this VHS tape in it. So I came here to find it from Reddit and of course it exists. He doesn't have to go to his dad's house now to watch it! Hi from Reddit!
Thanks. As a long time Wrangler dreamer, but never a buyer, I really enjoyed this. I've came close to buying in '93, '06, and periodically since. I think I realized I have to buy new because used ones are overpriced in my area.
David Roy I just payed $3500 for a 97 sport with 128k miles. You have to be ready to buy with cash in hand. I use Craigslist and search the whole state, use all nearby areas. You have to be the first one out there. I've seen many great deals go within 12 hours of the ad being posted. I contacted the seller with 20 minutes of him posting it on a Wednesday night. I was there at 9am the next morning and bought it. 3 hour drive but totally worth it. Just know what you want and when you find one jump on. Also, look for rust. Thankfully we don't have the problem as bad in the south.
When buying a used Wrangler are any Jeep inspect the trailing arms for the rear wheels. Many times these are rusted out and will cost you over $3,000 to have replaced. Take it to a reputable mechanic, put it on a rack and look for the rust. Chrysler Corporation who made these models did not design weep holes to allow water to run out of the arm. Good luck.

98 tj 2.5 litre here. bought a year ago with 96000 miles the dealer had all kind of accessories on it already when i bought it love it. if your looking for a jeep check J and S motors in Fairmount Indiana where i got mine i'm in Michigan. they are on the web.
Blast from the past lol. I never got to watch my vhs tape when I got my TJ in 2002 because I barfed in the bag it happened to be in 😂 look at that shiny new tj... never realized I was missing so many parts lol. I just smack stuff with a hammer until it fits. She's a rusty old frankenstein jeep now but ill never get rid of it.
Wow! I love how perfect and shiny and new it is in this video. Is it really that easy to put up and take down an oem soft top? I recently bought and installed a quadratec soft top and it was nowhere near that easy putting it on. I’m thinking maybe they heated the crap out of it first or it wasn’t really the first time using the soft top.
A nice modification to a Jeep Wrangler TJ is to change the hydraulic clutch master cylinder to a brake master cylinder. This will make the clutch pedal feel almost effortless to push in. This was an accidental discovery.
I had a 97 Jeep Tj and finally got rid of it. One electrical problem after another. Every month something else went wrong. I sold it and got an older CJ5 and have yet to have any issues with it.
If you take the soft top off your Jeep you better want to keep it off. Usually you’ll spend 10-30 minutes putting it on depending how much you are used to the procedure.
great info, I just picked up a 98 Jeep TJ and cant believe how much I am falling in love with it already. I did just post a video on my channel about it if your interested in having a look.
Highly informative.... Now I know how to car for my TJ Wrangler 1997, 4.0L automatic transmission. I need some info on Grand Cherokee, Laredo 4.0 L manual transmission.

thanks for making me realize how many gaskets and seals i'm missing :(
Same, look at how clear the windows are, damn
Haha same man and I wondered why I was getting so many leaks lmao. This is a useful little video
Joop
Hahaha
Haha same
Looks like the type of VHS tape we'd get shown in school when the teacher didn't want to teach.
🥱😴😂😂
This dude just summed up all the goddamn basics of a jeep in one video and it’s interesting
32:47 "Wrangler with the 4.0 liter engine and/or the 2.5 liter engine"
I didn't know you could have both. TEN CYLINDERS IT IS, BOYS.

KENARDO Image a tj with a viper engine.
An inline 10 cylinder engine?
Bahaha
@@Samspianopage you cant have your cake and eat it too sometimes
Thanks for posting this. I sometimes forget that my 98 was once factory fresh like those in the video.
I know right! Wheres all the rust wow
I don't own a Jeep. I watched the whole thing.
Tristan Newsome I had done the same a few years ago.. I ended up buying a 04 jeep tj
same with a 97
i did also watch without owning a jeep. this raised my opinion for TJ jeeps.
First time watching this, but I just bought my 1st Jeep 5 months ago.03X.

Man I love my TJ
Wow! I still have this video on VHS from when I bought my 2003 Wrangler. Still have the wrangler too! Thanks for posting. I don’t have a VCR anymore.
Got this on VHS tape from the dealer on Oct. 09, 2003 when the Shale Green Metallic Jeep TJ Sport 4.0L 5-speed was purchased off the showroom floor w/o a test drive or even sitting in it...the Jeep was that cool! Just bought a 2003 Wrangler and this video answered just about every question I have had so far, thanks so much for posting!
Yes I have 2003 I love it 50 yrs old forever be a jeep lover.
Just about to buy an 03 tj with full doors.
Last jeep was a 2015 JK with half doors.
Think I'm gonna love the tj more so than the JK.
This video looks like it was made in 1987 not 1997.
Also I'm now obsessed with the word 'Twobow'.
Just traded up for a 2002 Wrangler X with 80,000 miles on it! She is still a BABY...But the wife and I can't wait to cut her loose in the Arizona!
Bought my 2002 TJ new, no options. No radio, no air conditioning, no carpets, no back seat. Soft Top. Last 5 years or so have had issues getting into reverse. Will try your clutch advice next time. I brought this vhs and it came with a jeep, such a deal!
Thank you for posting! I just bought a 2006 X and learned a few things that the manual doesn't cover. Thank you!
Maybe people owning used Jeeps with missing gaskets and poorly connected seals from improperly raising the top is the reason for all the reports of leaking
Also...look at how clean these TJs are 😍
Also...I’m so glad it’s easier to remove tops on JLs
I never got the video when I bought my 97 TJ new from the dealer. A lot of these soft top tips I learned the long way over 7+ years of ownership.
His voice put me in a trance
Glad you liked it. It was helpful for me, as I got mine used and didn't know how to install the soft top (which had never been used).
Own a 97 Jeep Wrangler TJ. Most impressive part of the video was the Jeep going up that 80 degree hill in the dirt. Almost straight up. That's awesome
Have a question do I shift into 4 high while I’m driving or at a stop?
@@greggblankley6222 you can switch into 4 high while you're driving, just dont do it going too fast. Should switch into 4 lo at a very low (
Thanks for sharing this, Bret Sanders. Some owners of these TJs might find this info they didn't know existed useful.

Glad it helped. Since posting the video I sold my 02 TJ and got an 04 LJ. Much better!
you and me both! thanks!
Bret Sanders why do you like the LJ so much more than the TJ ?
das hasguns Depends on what's important to you. For me, these things were important - #1 more room behind the back seat, #2 smoother ride, #3 wanted something more "unique/rare".
das hasguns Oh and also the standard Dana 44 rear differential and higher gearing (3.73)! The Dana 44 was an option on the TJ, but hard to find.
nice vid.
I would like to buy a jeep like this.
now a days I have a 1998 jeep cherokee sport and a 1961 jeep willys.
hugs from Brazil.
Just got a 97 tj wrangler, thanks for posting this it helped a lot
I love this guy's voice. I wish I sounded like him.
I have this on VHS hahaha it came in my glove box.
So lucky
I just purchased a used 1999 Wrangler Sport. Thanks for this video, Bret Sanders!

Got mine last summer, already lots of fun.
Got a 99 wrangler and they're fun toys man
Thank you Mr. Sanders! You don't get video uploads this awesome over here in Shelbyville
I had the vhs of this (but 2000 version). I bet it’s still somewhere, but I’m so glad this is here as I just bought a TJ again.
Thanks bro, I just bought a ‘97 Sahara and this helped me learn a lot about my Jeep!

almost 20 years later I learned some things from this. I was wondering why I was getting 8 mpg after "shifting" to 2 wheel drive.😂
I didn’t search for this but glad it came up on my recommendations.
I gotta thank this man though he taught me some stuff about my top and seats

Awesome TJ video! The TJ Wrangler was built from 1995 (as a 1996) to the 2006 Model year.
1995 YJs were sold until mid 1996 as 1995 models, TJs started mid 1996 at 1997 models. No 1996 model year for either TJ or YJ
With apologies to the MB, the TJ is the best Jeep ever.

Thanks Bret Sanders for uploading this! I also have a Jeep Grand Cherokee Operating Tips tape, which I'll upload when possible.

Can you imagine trying to put that soft top up on the side of the interstate in the pouring rain with trucks flying by at 70 mph?
So you got the header, side bows, the 2 bow and the 3 bow, but wheres the tebow?
Tebow was 9 when this video was made.
