    The Jeep TJ really is a "dream car". I purchased my 2003 TJ new. It has over 260,000 miles now and does not use a drop of oil nor leak as drop of oil. It is my daily driver. Great around town and OK on the hwy. It converts to "motorhome" configuration when I go camping. I remove the passenger seat, add a shelf that extends from the dash to the rear window. Cover it with 4" foam and I have a 6'2" long comfortable bed. All camping gear fits under the shelf. During a 26 day vacation last year, a friend in another TJ and I did 20 high mountain passes in Colorado. The TJ's worked much better on the narrow high mountain passes than the newer wider Jeep models. Hate Gladiators on narrow trails.😠

    The only goal I have ever accomplished in my life was to obtain my dream vehicle, the last classic Jeep. When I started my life with her back in late 1996, I had no idea she was going to be the last model of the traditional Jeeps. She was labeled a 1997 but it was late 1996. The TJ proved to be the last model of the traditional Jeep. Today, I still have my dream vehicle. I will never part with her.

      @@markdavis2803 There was a fire this year. The Engine wiring loom caught fire. I emptied two fire extinguishers and cut the battery cable with a bolt cutter to stop the current. The engine compartment was scorched with many burnt parts. The bonnet was scorched with holes on it. The grill was black and the headlights broken. For anybody else, my dear RMS Stargazer would have been committed to the salvage yard so that other old Jeeps may continue forward using her parts. But this was my childhood dream. The only goal I have ever accomplished in my life. I had my beloved taken home, much to the confusion of he tow truck operator. I let her stay in her bay, quietly for about three months, then the collecting of old parts and aftermarket parts were all ready to install. It was a labour of love. But she runs again! However, she got the AMC rattle that the AMC 242ci I6 is infamous for. She did not have that before the fire. But she is running. Love will conquer the eventual engine failure, as well. The AMC rattle usually means only 200.000 more miles until engine failure.

      @@momohanakai2430 That engine will take a direct bolt-on of the 4.0 cylinder head with the direct fuel injection configuration making a more powerful engine than the 4.0 and the 4.2! I had a YJ made out of pieces. But it became such a confusing thing to work with thst I parted with her. That is why I got her so affordably. She had a 93 4.0 for the engine, an AX-5 transmission, the serial numbers did not match on the doors, tub, and engine. Parts were so hard to find until I pulled the old part first. But the bug was spreading throughout my body! I got my current RMS Stargazer because of Murphy, my "1990?" YJ Wrangler. I had Murphy nine years.

    So you posted this video a year ago--how much have you learned about cars in the time since?
    I had wanted a Jeep for a long time when my my car got wrecked about 6 years ago, so I bit the bullet and just replaced it with a 99 TJ (4.0, 5-speed manual). It was already lifted and had 35" mud tires when I got it. I've learned a LOT about fixing cars since then, and also bought a lot of tools, many of which I never even knew existed.

      @ProjectBilld  Год назад +1

      Honestly, not much to this point. Been busy with house projects and my first kid was born a few months ago. Haven't been able to make much time for the Jeep yet

    • @allmycarsisbroke
      @allmycarsisbroke Год назад

      @@ProjectBilld Ah, totally understand. My Jeep has at times been my primary focus with most of my free time for extended periods, and also sat completely ignored for extended periods (particularly when something was broken that felt too expensive or complicated to fully invest in addressing while other important stuff was going on).
      Congrats on the kid! Perhaps once the dust settles and you're comfortable with the day to day routine, you'll find more time to devote to the jeep.
      A bit of advice until then:
      1.) look into picking up a very slow (~1 amp or less) battery maintainer for $30-40 off amazon and leave that plugged in, use an extension cord of necessary to keep the device and connections out of the rain. That will help preserve the battery, and you'll need that for the other advice
      2.) Try to ensure you get out there and at least run the engine and drive it around the block once a week, or two weeks at most. This should include running the engine for at least 20 minutes, or 30 minutes if you're not actually driving it around. The reason for this is that gasoline combustion produces a lot of hydrogen as a byproduct, and that hydrogen combines with the carbon dioxide and monoxide in the exhaust to create water. That water gets deposited into the engine oil and also accumulates in the exhaust system, in particular the muffler, as the engine exhaust is expelled. Once the engine reaches full operating temp (including the oil, which takes longer than waiting just for the temp gauge to say the jeep is warm), the oil will be hot enough that any water byproducts will be vaporized and fully expelled along with the exhaust leaving the tailpipe. You'll need to keep running for at least a few minutes at that point so that the exhaust system and muffler are hot enough to vaporize and expel the water that has accumulated in the muffler.
      That's all a very long-winded way to say that you need to run the engine occasionally to keep the engine seals healthy, and then if you run the engine only rarely, each time you run it, you need to do so for a good 30 minutes or so to prevent excess water accumulation in the oil and exhaust system, which will cause the exhaust to rot very quickly. Driving even a little bit will help keep the bushings and joints in the steering and suspension from getting seized up or failing prematurely as well (be sure to add some grease to any grease fittings you can find underneath).
      Anyway, take care and best of luck with everything, whether you end up sticking with the Jeep or not.

    Noticed when you disconnected the negative terminal the batter moved a bit. I'd suggest making sure the battery is as snug as possible. When I first got my (new to me) TJ the battery was secured pretty loose and would wiggle its way to touching the wall of the car and shorting out the battery, alternator, and some sensors. I have had mine TJ since 1996, bought as a 1997. It was the demonstration TJ with a few aftermarket additions and a nonstandard paint job, which actually was popular enough that Jeep started offering it in 2000 as solar yellow. I got it for a very good price because it had been titled to the dealership. Although, she had only 11 miles on the odometer. I will never part with her. We have been through way too much to ever end our journey together. I love my RMS Stargazer. She is my love, my life, my dream come true.

    I got a 2011 Rubicon with 58K miles, would have loved a pre 2007, but impossible to find around here (Long Island) without 150K+ miles or a rotted out frame. My 2011 is spotless, looks out of the showroom, obviously garaged and looks better than my 2016 JKU 75th Anniversary Edition. I actually like the 3.8 much better than the 3.6 in the 2016.

    An old Jeep would be from the 70's or much older than that.
    Friend of mine has a '48 Jeep, from the Army.
    Completely stock, other than the usual consumable parts.
    Slow as a snail...but it will almost climb a tree!!
    Super fun to try to get it stuck.
    Rarely happens.
    Awesome vehicle!!
    Put the windshield down, no rollbar, and gas it!!!
    What could go wrong??

    I love my YJ none of all that plastic crap that will be dust in time, no EFI to go bad simple carb and ignition system can be fixed trail side. No way I would buy anything newer, once you start having all the common problems, cam crank maf tps fuel pump you will understand. You did find a nice clean one though clean it let it dry for days and then bed liner or "steelit" the entire underside. I will be driving my 1987 in 2050 or my son will be if I am dead by then.

    I bought a stock head unit off of eBay that was upgraded to blue tooth. Wife said she likes jeeps. Back in 2012. I noticed a 2004 Jeep Wrangler Sport at a local dealership that had only 30,000 on it. We lived in Michigan at the time. But the prior owner didn’t drive it in the winter. So I bought it. It’s a soft top. Only options that came on it are air conditioning, automatic transmission and larger tires. It now has 95,000 miles. We moved to Florida in 2013 and then Alabama in 2021. We have all ways stored it in our garage. But it needed a good detail. Just got it back from a professional detailer. He spent over twenty hours on it. It looks amazing. Before that I found a local mechanic that only works on Jeeps. And he works out of his home. Had him go through everything. Before the detail. He only charges $80 per hour. So rear main, oil pan gasket, fuel pump,valve cover gasket, pion seals, reseal differential covers, brake booster, master cylinder, slotted front disks, pads, drums and pads, thermostat, heater hoses, radiator hoses and serpentine belt. And five new BF Goodrich TA K2 tires. Found a local company that repairs automotive interiors. And they repair hard plastics, leather and vinyl. Like yours my door panel is cracked. So I’m going to have that done next. Some of the items above I installed or replaced myself. But I make a good living. And it’s easier on the back having someone else do some of the work. Congratulations on yours.

    It's amazing how, in nearly all cases, products become less durable and reliable as technology advances. The newest car I've ever owned is an 06. I will never buy a new car. They make them so difficult and inconvenient to work on you almost HAVE to take them to an expensive mechanic to have them fixed or maintained. It disgusts me.

      That's a good question that I wish I had an exact answer to. Sorry for the late reply, missed your comment. I'm actually looking into this right now as I want to add one to mine. I think any backup camera with a power wire to tap into the reverse lights would work. It looks like where to mount the camera is the hard part. Using a license plate mount camera would be easiest but it would be off center. I'm trying to find a way to mount mine behind/through the spare tire. I pretty sure the JLs do something like that

    I had a 1997 TJ from new. I replaced the stock plastic center console with an all metal one with a nice vinyl armrest. Way more secure and very easy to install. I sold that TJ with only 77k on the odometer because it became a money sucking nightmare. Loved that jeep, though and still think about getting another one.
