40 years without music its no surprise everyone wanted to sing and dance. There was the twist that Harbinger was there in the studios (not shown in your reaction). Plus the actress Susan Twists is in every episode and her name is in the end credits.
The musical was Maestro's domain lingering for a bit.
Like with Toymaker, it allowed one last use of her powers.
People forget just how MASSIVE Cilla was in the prime of her career.
im putting it together, my theory is the doctor is trapped inside a tv show, as in we are watching a tv show of the doctor being trapped in a tv show or something like that. there are just too many times those 4th wall breaks happen for it to be random , or my other theory is , reality is soo broken because of these gods, that they are causing elements of real life to bleed into the tv show making him aware hes in a tv show or realizing his life is being filmed to some degree. 1. we had ms flood aknowlege the camera. 2. in space babies the literally story was a story that was getting told to the babies therefore it came to life, every story of monsters needs a hero is what the doctor said. 3. the dvil's chord, maestro broke the 4th wall several times, and then 4. the doctor said he heard the music that only the audience is supposed to hear. and 5. the doctor saying theres always a twist at the end and winking at the camera. RTD is very clever with this stuff. one might think nah this is just random and cheesy, but when u think abut it its not, it has to be part of the story arc.
Yeah, The Truman Show occurred to me, as well.
A little bit of wandavision?
Capaldi knew as well. How many 4th wall breaks did he do.. there's a video out there on RUclips exploring this as one of the doctors abilities.
I saw someone suggest this also could be why the new sonic screwdriver looks like a tv remote...
Explaining the difficulty vocalists would have had finding the tritones adds a lot to the context of the episode. Some of that info should have made it in the show to be honest!
Forgot to add this.. I didn't like the ending either, it was too long and I HATED the song it's self. BUT I think it can be sort of explained, you remember that they made a big deal about the Toymakers powers hanging around for a little while (how they duplicate the TARDIS) The same may apply to Maestro and it's a manifestation of all the music returning to the world.
Ooh.. I like that explanation a lot. Nice one 😊
I thought the same thing.
Wow, the song at the end was my only problem with the episode, and you kinda just solved it for my headcanon! Honestly, thank you!!
Calling it now, “the one who waits” is Omega.
Nah the trickster
@6:00 Yeah... Loved the show since 1974 (+3 ('cos my younger brother came home from being born with a Tom Baker doll for me)) and I'm still here... The Doctor has always been different. But aren't we all. ;) :p :)
Exactly.
“TA-DAAA!”
“Are you the devil?”
Your reaction to the Maestro killed me 😂 I wasn’t a huge fan of the song at the end initially but I think it’ll grow on me with time. Loved all the meta bits/fourth wall breaks and it’s lovely to get a mention of Susan in there too
Same
I really liked this one. It's not flawless - I could have done with the Beatles being more involved in the episode to set up them saving the day at the end (maybe tying the banishing chord into their actual music), and I think there was enough here to support it being a two-parter if they'd slowed the pace down a bit.
Loved The Maestro though, and thought the idea that taking away music turned humanity colder, and more likely to destroy itself. A very neat idea.
I've gone back and forth on the musical bit at the end. Wasn't a fan initially, but I saw someone else suggest that much like with the Toymaker's warping of reality, the musical bit at the end was a result of there being no music, then reality suddenly snapping back and there briefly being too much music. An idea I quite like.
I wonder if the Beatles were more involved, but they had to cut back and re-write after they failed to get any rights to any Beatles music at all.
To be fair, it needed a musical number. It was The Beatles lol. But yeah it was odd for Doctor Who to have a music number. Just get ready for the inevitable musical episode lol.
Re Ncuti Gatwa's "controversial comment"... this was one comment, in reply to a question, within a wide ranging interview/conversation. It's been blown up out of proportion, by the usual suspects. As to the comment, it's not even that controversial. The idea is that if you're black within an area where the white mainstream predominate, you have to work twice as hard, be twice as good, to compete with white people. Because people are looking for an excuse to put you down. I'm sorry if people find that offensive but it's the reality perceived by many black people. It would probably be the same if the roles were reversed.
Women said that back in the 60s. That they had to be twice as good to be considered equal to a man. Things don't change that much 😢
One thing I noticed but don't think I've seen anyone mention is that The Doctor was there at the night of Ruby's birth. Wouldn't it be interesting if he was the Oldest One? He is now breaking the fourth wall just like Maestro and the Toymaker did.
I actually do love the idea of Doctor Who does Hairspray. And I love the final musical number - even if it is arguably a bit too long. But it's interesting that musically the notes of "always a twist at the end" does mimic the giggle. There's a greater plan in this I'm certain.
i think there is more to that song at the end.. also interesting, the Tea Lady and one of the officers on the monitors from first episode is an actor named Susan Twist.
I love musicals, and i love this episode. I do hope this doesn't become the norm as by itself i think this works well as a silly idea. I love Maestro as i love the energy of their acting. The twist at the end was a little long, i agree
I totally agree with the music number at the end of the episode.
Watched this on Patreon so I know it's great - like and comment for the YT algorithm.
Legend!
I've been looking forward to watching this.😁
I didn't care for the musical number either; to paraphrase the late, great Graham Chapman, it's far too silly! Apart from that though, I really liked this one.
(I also suspect that Russell is on a mission to make everyone cringe; so far, he's winning, lol)
0:46, they could afford in Hartnell era. Remember "The Chase"?
good point. lol
Loved this ep too. I thought Maestro was magnificent. What a performance. Theatrical and terrifying. Shame you didn’t like the song/twist at the end, but hey , not for everyone. Just put me in mind of Eccleston dancing in The Doctor Dances at the end of that ep in a way. Sure, much more involved tho. Anyways, fab reaction as per.
So I'm not the only one who didn't like the ending to it, to me that ending didn't feel like Dr who it never,
The rest of it was good, the ending not so much.
@@aliceplaysreactions64 yh that's wat I says in my review too, the episode was great but the ending was not good
WOW THAT was a great reaction, I agree with your opinions on the episode, not great but passable for second episode
Could ruby be river doctor daughter or ruby might be Susan biological granddaughter?
Listen to the song she starts singing right before Carol of the bells starts playing. We've heard it before, a long time ago...
Sir you're back! Brilliant!🫡
I love this episode.😀
None of the Beatles could read music. The remaining two still can’t. Lots of historical details were wrong….the styles were more 65 than 63, Lennon didn’t wear those glasses until 66. But…Mavity? Does it all tie in? I agree with your rating…I feel like with maybe a rewrite it could have been great. It was fun but a tad “off”. I keep going back to the second Doctor in the land of fiction…. Or Donna is the computer simulation in the Library episodes…I sure hope this is going somewhere.
That's a good point about mavity - maybe everything is just a bit off.
Good discussion at the outset. I didn't know anything about the Devil's chord, sharpened fifth, Diablo de musica. Very interesting! So we have another myth brought into reality. I wish that the music teacher had made that a little more clear. I loved this episode! I loved Maestro.
I haven't watched your Space Babies reaction, because I really didn't like that episode.
I am right with you on the politicians' manufactured LGBTQ hatred. I have so many friends and family members who are adversely affected and it's upsetting.
Did you notice the theme song was playing on the jukebox, as well?
Did you notice Susan Twist? Every time the Doctor faced her, she turned her back and vice versa. That seems to suggest they might recognize one another if they were to see each other.
The one who waits; Susan Twist, always a twist at the end... I kind of think Susan Foreman is the Twist. The One Who Waits. She is waiting for the Doctor to return and she is angry? Maybe?
Favorite line: “I thought that was non-diegetic.” The repeated fourth wall breaking; the musical numbers... The fairy tale feel. I think they are in a fairy tale. An alternate reality, like from the Trickster. I think maybe Ruby is not real. She is a mythological or fairy tale character. I keep coming back to the opening monologue of Ruby Road, where the Doctor said, no one knew the mother's name until the Doctor came to call. The Doctor had to know who she was. He had to have talked to her. That is why he was crying.
For these reasons I didn't mind the song and dance bit in this episode. It was a musical episode, it is an altered reality.Like in Footloose, the town is happy and celebrating the return of music and dancing. There is a lingering influence, like the Toymaker. It makes sense. Plus, we saw Harbinger is back.... So, there is that....
OH< and re: The Doctor not being gay,. Neil Gaiman had to address that, too, re: Good Omens. Angels are celestial beings, not humans; they are not homosexual or heterosexual. We have no idea how Time Lords reproduce, we don't know their genetic makeup..... For all we know, they could be replicated like Jenny in the Doctor's Daughter.
its a sharpened fourth, i mis-spoke.. (thought i mightve made a mistake there, but wasnt sure).
susan may be the Twist....Im not sure on that theory yet...
I did not notice the theme on the jukebox..
I was relieved that you (Aliceplays) knew your Dr Who so well. You might check RUclips for other reviews and you will see that the whole Who community is upset. Not just about the content problems but the replies made by RTD and the actor that plays the doctor. They said some very bad things to the fans. But, I won’t try to address that. As for your review, I agree, the end was not good. You and I lived through the 60’s and I noticed right away that the song was not even in a key that was used then. It could not be further away from 60’s music. It was not reminiscent of any of the twist songs and it sounded foreign to the era. The other comment I want to state is that I am an all out lover of musicals but Dr Who is not the place for it and I hated it. Who fans don’t tune into Who to watch dancing and musical choreographed numbers. We want Who content. I think they could have spent more time fleshing out the story. I generally liked the actors who played the parts but I feel that there could be less attention to gender, it interferes with the flow of the story. Fans are not even thinking about that and I don’t want to have to stop and consider about it. That subject is not part of the story or situations in the series. There were many things I liked, but let’s see what they do with “Boom”. Thank you for a good review.
I didn't live through the 60s. Barely remember the 70s. The whole community is not upset, some of the community is. Sorry, couldn't let them go😊.
I love the show and think I know the various lore quite well, but have little time for the behind the scenes drama if I'm honest.
No, the whole community is not upset.
Hi, part of the Doctor Who community here. Not upset. I think you'll find most of us aren't, to be honest.
It’s funny that people hate the show so much because of change when the shows premise is exactly that. 😂
