oh hon.. i sob everytime I hear this piece.. it's so powerful.. I applaud you for being able to play it. Must be so amazing, to be surrounded and 'in' this music.
If you get the chance, go to the ballet Spartacus, for which this music was composed. I saw it this month in Yerevan, Armenia. While not perfect technically it was still a tremendous experience. It's the story of the Spartacus-led slave rebellion during the time of the Roman Empire. Very moving.
Hi, Edward, best version as for me and many generations is Maris Liepa and Vasilyev version. Check and I'm sure you will be terrified. Thanks for nice word about our ARmenian performers , yes our ballet school is not as good as Russian, but what comes to Spartacus , it is pescial for them, and they always do it by heart )))
There is nothing like driving the car and filling it with the sounds of this magnificence...And when I had to refill the the fuel at a gas station the attendant happened to hear this theme and said., "What is that...so beautiful?"
I'm playing this in my youth symphony and this is one of the few pieces where I'm happy that being a trombonist means a lot of rests; I'm able to savor the first five minutes of this glorious piece without having to focus on my own playing! I plan on watching the ballet sooner than later, now, because this is one of my new favorite pieces.
I first listened to this piece in 1977, I was 15 years old, the world may have changed beyond recognition since, but it lets me escape to happier times. Thank you Maestro.
This great work became famous in the 1970s in England as the theme to "The Onedin Line," a very popular tv series about a shipowner in Victorian times- Khachaturian's music is perfect for a show about the sea, but has nothing whatever to do with it!
That show was syndicated in North America and it played on TV during a babysitting job I had as a teen. I forgot about it until I heard this stunning music again.
When I was young, I think this beautiful music is about sailing. Now I fully appreciated it's power and beauty as it vividly described a persons life journey, such as myself and countless others. Aram Khachaturian was Armenian, living in Russia. I do not agree with the idea of being a "minor composer", considering only this melody and the "Dance of Sabres", ignoring the other masterpieces, I think he was one of the major composers of the 20-th century. On the other hand, on my opinion, this "Adagio" is simply about love: feelings of deep love are very explicitly expressed by the music and this is simply called Great Art. No more comments. That piece of music, and only this melody, makes me wish I could dance ballet. There's no other way in expressing the beauty of this than through ballet, me thinks.
