This chapter was super depressing. Rock leaving the team. Kaladin suffering depression all alone. And then the time they spent in the pub. OMG! 😂. I was super sad when Rock left.

I suspect that Kaladin will actually reach the 4th ideal more easily as he lets others take control of the Windrunners. The ideal seems to be about accepting how he can't protect *everyone*, and now he's being forced to admit that reality. Perhaps by stepping back, he'll actually be better positioned to take "the next step".

I'd actually think it's neat if he WEREN'T the first windrunner to reach the 4th ideal, since it'd help him even more fully embrace how sometimes he needs to let others protect HIM, too.

Adolin annoyed me so much when we first met him with his constant whining, and look at him now! I pray Brandon doesn't throw something truly awful at him before all is said and done.
He's like an already-heroic version of Jaime Lannister (though that may be overstating Lannister). He DOES care, he just has NO IDEA what he's doing at times. But he tries.
I have to say, this particular part of the story is pretty triggering. In the last chapter, the smile at Dalinar. In this one, the way he acts like everything is ok to everyone, going through the motions...but when alone, the agony. He's so very very close to suicide. Sanderson must know someone with depression in order to describe it so perfectly.
I'm calling restares is related to shallan somehow. That would explain why she bonded a spren so young and doesn't remember it and why maraize is so sure she'll be a real ghost blood after she kills them. Plus it would be in line with the whole killing family theme she's got going.

I don't think it would be a fair representation of chronic depression for Kaladin to have a simple journey in this regards. Though, the first time we saw a reemergence of "The Wretch" (in WoK), I felt very similarly to what you're expressing. Now, I appreciate the representation that depression isn't just something to be beaten by "bucking up".

I can see the logic behind it but for me, the groundwork just isn't there for him to be corrupted. It could happen anyway through some magic force, like the passions, but it wouldn't be very satisfying.
Im upset so far one of my fav characters kal is being relived of duty from the men he saved they also said kal will never say the 4th ideal and im guessing kal will also be taking a back seat in the rest of the series its a real bummer so far
Considering the payoffs in every Brandon Sanderson book I’ve read, I have no doubt Kaladin will get similar treatment. Don’t forget that the guy is clinically depressed, and still has yet to reconcile with the fact that his father is openly disappointed in him. So far, he’s held strong, but that’s not his character. Kaladin has to deal with his major issues before moving on. When he does swear the 4th ideal, he will do so unhindered by the “darkness” inside him.

The guy has clinical depression on top of what appears to be post-traumatic stress disorder (the latter of which he seems to have had ever since Tien died). He needs to get HELP before he can work to be better, and as he was, he couldn't do that anymore.

It’s never something to be “gotten over.” He may have to condense the process, but he doesn’t ignore that it is a process with ups and downs. Someone I love has PTSD about a specific day, and I can say that it’s never easy, but with love and care, it gets better each year. I hope to see the same improvements in Kaladin as he takes the time he needs to care for himself.
